    Tash, our money is pretty much a cornucopia of facts, history and symbolism. Fun fact: since 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced coinage for over 80 different countries.

    Interesting fact I totally forgot about but our Loony ($1 coin) was buried in the ice at the 2002 Olympics for the Gold Metal Hockey Games which were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Canada hadn't won gold in Men's Hockey since 1952 and our Women's team had lost the previous Olympic Gold to the USA in 1998. We won both Gold Medals that year in hockey. The guy who was preparing the ice did it and they found out about it because it could be seen under the ice and was told that he had to take it out, but he had a back up plan. The next time he was preparing the ice he buried it again but this time he painted over it so it couldn't be seen. The Canadian teams were the only ones privy to the fact we had a loonie buried at center ice and it helped out the morale of both teams. That loonie now resides in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The day our men's hockey team brought home the Gold in hockey was a day that Canadian's celebrated from coast to coast. What made it even cooler is that both our men's and women's team beat the US on their soil.

    OMG Tash, I know you did a video on Dildo, Newfoundland a while back so I thought you'd get a kick out of this. I just read on CBC that a photographer from Dildo has gone viral with his photos of an iceberg off the coast of Harbour Grace, Nfld that is shaped exactly like a complete part of the male anatomy. It's been nicknamed the "dickie berg" and some of the comments are hilarious!

    The bills have "bumps" on them to assist the blind but they are NOT Braille.
    The 6 bumps on the $5 (arranged like on dice) would be the word "of" in Braille.
    Two sets of six on the $10, 3 for the 20, 4 on the 50 and 2 widely spaced for the 100.

    It took Canada decades to catch up with anything even approaching the "cool" of Australian bank notes!---when I flew to Oz in 1982 and exchanged for some Australian currency at Vancouver Airport I was amazed at the images of the Murriyang (Parkes) Radio Telescope and DNA molecules---maybe on the $10 notes? Your money was also worth a lot more at the time (I took a beating).

    I'm Canadian. The maple syrup smell was real. I grew up in Winnipeg, where this was first done in the Canadian mint in Winnipeg. 2012, it was only the $20 notes that had the maple syrup smell, which only lasted for about 3 months. On top of that, whatever they used to make it, made the $20 notes stick to each other, it was common by ATM, customer, and cashier, to get/give 2-3 $20's for every 1 you wanted. I remember having to fold the notes in half before giving them out, and telling customers to do the same. But nothing like going to pull out a $20, and get 2 or 3 instead 😂. And if I recall correctly (it's 2023 now, so it's been 11 years) it was only done in the Winnipeg and Halifax mints, and by the time the Edmonton mint was set to release their end, Halifax and Winnipeg already had these reports, so really no one west of...maybe Saskatchewan, never really had it. As I said, I could be 100% wrong, I was a cashier at a phpharmacy lol
    As for if Charles will replace his mother on our $20...no clue. Haven't heard or seen anything yet. Probably won't until after his coronation.

    • @aussietashreacts
      @aussietashreacts  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Charles will only be on coins here, no notes. Not to be disrespectful but I think they are only doing it out of duty lol. The republican debate is back if full swing here after the passing of Queen Elizabeth

    One thing that they didn't mention was that on every bill, there are dots that help the blind know what denomination the bill is, like the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100.

    an old $10.00 paper bilI showed pictures of Canada's military “remembrance and Peacekeeping" on the back a male veteran stands with a boy and a girl observing a cenotaph on Remembrance Day, the vet happened to be a patient at my friends dental office. I was in Colorado working on a contract back in 2009-2010 I showed some of our 'funny money' to the Americans they were amazed that we had common people on our bank notes. Australia had the plastic money before Canada.

    Here's a bit of trivia that applies to Canada and Australia: By tradition, the direction our monarch faces on coins switches with each new monarch. You might notice that on coins Queen Elizabeth II's portrait consistently shows the right side of her face. So King Charles II will face to the left instead, just like his grandfather King George VI did on coins, and the monarch after him, presumably William, will (once again) face right, like Elizabeth.

    Hi Tash ~ This is a separate and a complete tangent from your video…but…I was wondering if you enjoy BAKING/COOKING much…or even just watching short videos thereof? If so, I have a great Canadian channel that offers history behind baking/cooking, and provides the recipes. The videos are not long (I know how busy you must be), but I thought you might enjoy them. There are a few darling Aussies in our online community. The name is of the channel is…”Glen and Friends”.

    The smell of maple syrup may very well be found on any of our bank notes. They do, after all, go through a lot of Canadian hands, and those hands are holding all kinds of foods that we've slathered in sticky maple syrup. Only makes sense that some sticky fingers may have handled the money! 🤔👋😉😄🇨🇦

    Mmm no, someone gave me a $100 bill recently. It didn't smell like maple syrup (naturally I checked). 😊 It did smell nice, probably because it's been handled much less. But our bills are plastic and don't really have much smell (compared to U.S. paper money, which can really stink).

    Only the banknotes worth $100 or more smell like maple syrup Tash, anything smaller smells like a either a pine or a cedar tree. The loonies and toonies smell pretty much like any other coin from almost any other place does. There was talk of trying to make our dollar coins scented too, but nobody could figure out what a toonie would smell like. After no consensus was reached, the entire ill-conceived idea was dropped. The idea for the scented $1 coin was also dropped, but sort of for the opposite reason, you see everyone working on the project had a lake house somewhere in Canada, and so they all knew too well what a loonie actually smelled like. Totally true story 😇.
