Lifelong fan of Laura Nyro and her music…then comes Corinne and absolutely nails this legendary hit song adding to it a style that can only be Swing Out Sister. Gina Foster’s backup vocals just brings the soul into this song catapulting it to further heights…Amazing singer! Surrey on down!
Back up singers never get enough credit or attention. The back up singer next to Corrine makes her shine in fact all of SOS back up singers are incredible. Hats off to them.,
THIS is a PERFECT example of White Soul - I've been digging SOS for over 20 years now, and they never fail to get my motor (and my mind) in gear. AND their music, even their covers are always fresh, soulful and highly emotive - And my girl Gina has BEEN ready to go solo!!! This is one of, if not their BEST cover! 6:28
A gorgeous and elegant cover of the original recording from 1968 by the Bronx genius singer/songwriter Laura Nyro, who also wrote this "masterpiece" (Stephen Sondheim). The Fifth Dimension covered 10 of Laura Nyro's original songs. Nyro's recordings of all of her songs are also the original recordings, such as Wedding Bell Blues, Sweet Blindness and Save the Country, etc.
Met Corrine and the original Swing Out Sister trio, many years ago, just after their first release at one of their homes. A very nice lady, and a lovely relaxed voice.
Still the complete package after all these years !! Classy , elegant, sensual !! How many of the young singers can claim the same ?? Not many !! Right on Sister !!
SOS just keeps reinventing themselves over time. Incredible ! Even 5th Dimension would be proud of this version. Very few groups blend elements of jazz, pop, soul, funk as seamlessly as SOS.
Mannnnnnnnn ohhhhh mannnn!!! This right here....lawddddd!!! The instruments, the music, the groove, the vocals, the arrangement, the harmonies...Jesussssss!!! I found this by mistake a few months ago but I can't stop listening to it!!! Everything is RIGHT about this!!! Wish y'all could've went on a little longer. I didn't want it to end!!! God bless yall SOS. Jamming y'all all the way in Lafayette, Louisiana
I should say one more thing: I'm just crazy about this set-up... double bass, nylon guitar, flugelhorn, acoustic piano, and percussion/no kit! wow... great band, and I'm just jazzed by the percussionist: she's having an absolute ball, as are they all... I love this video!
Yes, watching the video at the same time lifts the song to a heavenly level. Love the lazy, unrushed, swing beat instrumental building up to the vocals. Totally unrushed, no urgency…just a pure relaxed beat and a total change to the often manic and rushed repertoires of other bands.
Yes ! Jody Linscots is one of the finest percussionists I've ever seen ....she completely becomes part of the music , giving herself up to the groove ! An incredible and joyful performance ! ♥️
They came to my country years ago during one of the greatest jazz event named Java Jazz. I went close enough to see the lead singer in person. Love you always SOS. Forever in my heart and now the music is in my iPhone. Cheers
CORRINE DREWERY IS A HELL OF A TALENT. GREAT REMAKE, HER AND THE BACKUP SINGER KILLED THIS. WISH I COULD HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING SWINGOUT SISTER!! LOVED THEM SINCE 1989'S WAITING GAME.
Reinaldo Green I was driving a blue Honda Civic in a sunny weekday morning @ ~10 am on Freeway 280 from San Francisco to Palo Alto to SOS' "Twilight World" on my car radio. I was going to Stanford Medical Centre because of an orthopaedic illness... I was 26 then. It was the beginning of Silicon Valley.
Swingout "Soul" Sister. Corinne got it goin' on. Been in love with her since that "Breakout" Album. Thank you Andy too and the rest of the SOS group your music is "Superb, Superb".
Love how they arranged Junior Walker's bridge part to "Walk In The Night" within Laura Nyro's "Stone Soul Picnic" near the end. Wonderful!! Everyone be careful out there..
...and of course the heavenly 5th Dimension who majestically turned this little known Laura Nyro number into a smash hit (criminally not released in the UK!)
There are a lot of covers of stoned soul picnic out there but where did the band Swing Out Sister come from? There take on this is truly amazing, I must say they really got soul & sweetest of voices I ever heard. I hope Laura's smiling down from heavenly places making US proud. This is really nice really enjoyed this version.
They ARE still going, and were hugely popular in the late 80s thru the 2000s, especially in Japan, whose citizens appreciated their musical sophistication ... their first two CDs are classics.
At 6:27 the singer motifs "Walk In the Night" by Jr. Walker. So, another "Tip-of-the-hat" to another soul great, all in the same song. Andy, you are truly brilliant.
This is an excellent cover of the old 5th Dimension tune. As much as I still enjoy the 5th Dimension, I like this version more. Excellent arrangement. Depth, texture and amazing rhythm !
Laura Nyro wrote this song and recorded it originally. The 5th Dimension had hits with 8 Laura Nyro songs, such as this, Wedding Bell Blues (USA No.1), Sweet Blindness, Time and Love, Save the Country, etc - Nyro wrote them all, and was the original recording artist
I’m an amateur sound engineer! The technical arrangements are fabulous! Simple instruments producing a unique sound... is it me, or is there a lovely pad sitting under this... can’t just see a keyboard unless the piano is midi equipped! Love it all tho! Pure talent!! 💕
JUST BEAUTIFUL! !!! WHAT A RENDITION OF ONE OF MY FAVS!! 90S STILL CARRIED OVER SOME REAL SOUL!! WHY COULDNT WE STAYTHIS WAY!!REAL SINGERS REAL MUSICIANS! ! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! NOTHING WAS BROKEN N YET THEY DIDNT FIX IT!! IT GOT WORSE! ! OUR CHILDRENS CHILDREN WILL NEVER KNOW AT THIS RATE SO VERY SAD!! GREEEEEDY CORPORATE AMERICA YOU J Os !!!!!!!!!
It is disheartening to be sure...I so miss beautiful music, and fun music from musicians like we used to have....I don't understand the appeal of Top 40 these days...The music isn't even close to as good as it used to be...
I have been a fan of Swingout Sister since 1986, when I first heard 'Breakout'! I tremendously appreciate their unique artistic creativity. Corrine has mentioned that some of their music had been inspired by the great John Barry of James Bond fame! That's really aiming high.
Marty Emmons Yep. She and Andy have stated that their biggest influences are John Barry, Michel Legrand, and Laura Nyro. Definitely some of the best influences possible!
I never got to see Swing Out Sister Live for real but if I did I'd consider it an honour and a privilege to be there. They don't get enough recognition for how good they are, they are really special. I have a couple of their Live albums but my favorite is the one titled Swing Out Sister Live by Shanachie (label), I think it was recorded in Tokyo, definitely one of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to, keep swinging Swing Out Sister, we love you.
Osobne som sa stretol s Corrine Drewery,Andy Connelom na Jazzových dňoch v Bratislave a dokonca potešil kyticou kvetov a Jody Linscott som prekvapil konštatovaním, že hrala v skupine Kokomo.
Love Corinne !! SEPT 2024 who’s diggin it
Lifelong fan of Laura Nyro and her music…then comes Corinne and absolutely nails this legendary hit song adding to it a style that can only be Swing Out Sister. Gina Foster’s backup vocals just brings the soul into this song catapulting it to further heights…Amazing singer! Surrey on down!
Me too.
Swingout sister is 🔥🔥🔥
Love, Corinne, Andy and the band, so cool music, great wav❤
Back up singers never get enough credit or attention. The back up singer next to Corrine makes her shine in fact all of SOS back up singers are incredible. Hats off to them.,
Saw them live in 2009 and yes, Gina Foster is amazing!
Still listening 2024!
THIS is a PERFECT example of White Soul - I've been digging SOS for over 20 years now, and they never fail to get my motor (and my mind) in gear. I recall hearing the Fifth Dimension doing this when I was in the 7th or 8th grade.
The band sounds great. Gina Foster knocks it out of the park - what a vocal talent.
But she makes sure they all get recognized, a real class act
you never hear anything bad about SOS or any of its members. Yes, real class.
Never will the Fifth Dimension be matched ... but this is a great edition of this classic.

Great sounds as always 🎉
The 5th Dimension version was ringing in my head all night and I stumbled on this today. Nice.
Crazy talented and relevant. After all these years, all hail Laura Nyro original writer, performer.
Laura, one of my big 3 song writers, with C. King and B. Bacharach
LOVE HER!
Go away
I am such a fan! Bravo!!! And doing Laura Nyro??!!! Perfection!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Met Corrine and the original Swing Out Sister trio, many years ago, just after their first release at one of their homes. A very nice lady, and a lovely relaxed voice.
Magnificent!
I always love the music of Laura Nyro I always enjoyed the music of Swing Out Sister this is one beautiful recording
One of the best versions of Stoned Soul Picnic I have ever heard.
One of the best? The Best
Almost as good as 5th Dimension.
@@tr4head exactly not as good though
Sorry, nothing could ever match The 5th Dimension's 1968 smash rendition of this iconic Laura Nyro song. It is/was pure champagne soul perfection.
I should add that this version by Swing Out Sister is still flaming brilliant and I come back to it often for some beautiful swing to my soul.
Still the complete package after all these years !! Classy , elegant, sensual !! How many of the young singers can claim the same ?? Not many !! Right on Sister !!
BEST BAND ON THE PLANET! LOVE THE MUSIC, HER VOICE IS AMAZING! SO MUCH TALENT AND JUST CANT STOP WATCHING.
SOS just keeps reinventing themselves over time. Incredible ! Even 5th Dimension would be proud of this version. Very few groups blend elements of jazz, pop, soul, funk as seamlessly as SOS.
I love these guys going back to I'm not the same girl
Terrific cover. I'm mesmerized not only by the music but by Corinne's swaying arms and hands.
An excellent take on Laura and the Fifth Dimension
Swing out sister just did this song justice. Simply incredible.
One of my favorite tunes from the 1960s sang by one of my favorite bands from the 1970s.love it.
Done! 💯 Swing Out Sister is famous for quality representation of American Soul Music and this homage to The 5th Dimension is no exception!
That was silky smooth-funky, soulful and jazzy-Laura Nyro must be smiling. Thank you for this wonderful video.
The incredible genius of Laura Nyro covered by one of greatest groups ever Swing Out Sister.
Beautiful music,...
Makes me miss Nyro all the more. This is a fine version on its own. Interesting rhythms and harmonies.
Amazing cover!! The back up singer is phenomenal. ❤❤
Corrine and Gina foster compliment each other perfectly
Mannnnnnnnn ohhhhh mannnn!!! This right here....lawddddd!!! The instruments, the music, the groove, the vocals, the arrangement, the harmonies...Jesussssss!!! @Alex Taylor right on the money, dude!!
Never get tired of listening to this
@Genie McCoy...YES!!! I feel the same way. Been listening to this since it came to TH-cam.
I feel the same - just keep returning to this.
One of the benchmarks of a true talent is a live performance. SOS never disappoints. Have been a fan since Breakout was new. Fantastic!!
Love!
wow i've been looking for you for 20-30 years and now i've found you again, music from my youth. How cool!
I'll keep this short in order to get back to the music.
Pure class.
Words can not express my adulation and appreciation for their contribution to genuine music. Andy, Corrine, and Ivy, I adore you all
"Swing Out Sister", as usual, living up to their name!!
I should say one more thing: I'm just crazy about this set-up... double bass, nylon guitar, flugelhorn, acoustic piano, and percussion/no kit! wow... great band, and I'm just jazzed by the percussionist: she's having an absolute ball, as are they all... I love this video!

Laura Nyro's spirit is SO large in this arrangement. Fabulous.
Love Laura Nyro...died way too young
Absolutely!
Tip of the cap to Jr. Walker and “Walk in The Night” so smooth that transition. 🎼🙏🎼
They came to my country years ago during one of the greatest jazz event named Java Jazz. I went close enough to see the lead singer in person. Love you always SOS. Forever in my heart and now the music is in my iPhone. Cheers
I love this band. I don’t get tired of hearing their best known songs.
Beautiful and jazzy
Magnificent combination - Laura Nyro and Corrine. And what a gorgeous arrangement! I find that I keep coming back to this.
I think the 5 dimension is worth more than a passing mention
Gorgeous cover of the fab original by that precocious Bronx genius, Laura Nyro, from her 1968 masterpiece LP, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession.
Laura Nyro gone too soon R.I.P.
Fifth dimension song
Stunning version!!!
Great version of Laura Nyro's song. I keep coming back to listening to this version on TH-cam.
CORRINE DREWERY IS A HELL OF A TALENT. GREAT REMAKE, HER AND THE BACKUP SINGER KILLED THIS. WISH I COULD HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING SWINGOUT SISTER!! LOVED THEM SINCE 1989'S WAITING GAME.
