Karen actually started out playing the drums exclusively but her brother urged her to get past her shyness and share her beautiful voice with the public. Here is a version of a 1940's standard "I Can Dream, Can't I?" that Karen recorded in a style that highlighted her voice more clearly than in the traditional Carpenter's style. It's beautiful and I'm sure you guys will love it: th-cam.com/video/W3X7xz62Ai0/w-d-xo.html

Richard. Still with us at age 76, and still a fine pianist. He tried to carry on with a solo recording career after Karen passed, but of course it could never be the same, and ultimately he became a kind of guardian and archivist for Carpenters' recorded legacy, overseeing several retrospectives and compilations.
Some of his post-Carpenters work is wonderful in its own right:
Karen's Theme (from the TV biopic on KC)
When Time Was All We Had
Something In Your Eyes (these two from the 1987 Time album; the latter features Dusty Springfield singing lead and was a modest radio hit in Canada and Australia)

When I was in boot camp in 1971, the company went together and bought an 8-track player. We voted and bought 3 cassettes: One as "Portrait" by the Fifth Dimension; the second one was the Carpenters first album, "Close to You;" and third one was either by Tammy Wynette or Loretta Lynn, I can't remember which one it was. We all had very good taste.

    • @stevetournay6103
      @stevetournay6103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Gonna be "that guy" and point out that Close To You was Carpenters' second album (1970); their first (in 1969) was initially called Offering, later reissued as Ticket To Ride (their cover of that Beatles tune was their first single). But it was Close To You, the song itself and also the album (which also featured We've Only Just Begun), that made Carpenters a global sensation.

We had all grown up hearing that beautiful voice on our parents stereos, and you couldn’t help but know every song. Anorexia was a big topic back then, and it really was crazy someone so famous and gifted died of it. While she was alive, her songs filled me with a sense of calm and peace...as you said, the voice of an angel on Earth. After she died so tragically...knowing that the people closest to her had no idea how to help her and basically allowed her to starve herself to death...I can't listen to her songs without crying. "What I've got they used to call the blues...Nothin' is really wrong...Feelin' like I don't belong"...she was telling us that she was suffering from depression and we did nothing about it. Such a monumental, tragic loss of such a tremendous talent.

Karen started playing drums in the high school marching band at Downey High, Downey CA. My high school rival.
Karen and her brother Richard formed a jazz trio with a friend and won the battle of the bands. She is an excellent drummer. There is a you tube video of her doing a drum solo. Go find it!
After awhile she was pushed to get away from the drums and stand in front to sing so people could see her better.
She always said, "i'm not a singer. I'm a drummer who sings"
If you ever come to Southern CA, I will show you where they used to live.
The Apts they owned somewhere in LA are still standing but the name has changed.

Carpenters were serious about music...all so well done, so professional and passionate. I will always miss Karen

She was always so understated with her vocals. She could have belted those notes so much more than she ever did

Such a beautiful song. Thank you for reacting to it. I grew up on this music and sing by them is literally the first song I can remember listening to as a child. Karen Carpenter was a true musician and gone too soon. Rip ❤️

My mum loved The Carpenters and I inherited that love from her. So beautiful. And my mum passed a year ago, so there's extra poignancy there.

Karen and her brother were musical, but she played with his band because it got her out of going to gym class. She played the drums for the band, until one day their singer didn't or couldn't show for a gig, and Karen stepped in notwithstanding how shy she was. The rest was magnificently beautiful history for fans of the Carpenters. The music was honest and wholesome, which in the turbulent 60's and 70's was a balm to music listener's souls. Thanks for reacting to this remarkable brother and sister group.

As amazing as her voice is, but can we just take a moment and comment on the fact that she's also playing the drums while belting out this song! ♥

There is a video of just how banging she was on drums… she considered herself a drummer that sang. It took a lot of pushing to get out from behind her drum kit to take center stage
