I am from SA and took the Overland when I was a kid a couple of times, Back then it was a sleeper service which I think was far better as a bulk of the trip is through regional SA and the Wimmera which is almost the same flat farmland so you could just sleep through most of the trip. Also the service was more frequent and its days were not odd. Sadly it is privatised, sleeper service gone and has odd days and is only twice a week. I honestly think it being changed from a proper intercity rail service to a "tourist experience" has hindered it badly and provides less alternative to Bus or Flying. Also the next main issue is that it uses a freight train engine and the carriages from from the 1950s so it goes horribly slow on the areas of track where it could easily go above 100 but the Overland averages 90km so this pushes out the time of the Journey. With newer rolling stock making it faster and better days so many more people will use the service. Also the Keswick terminal in Adelaide is such a useless disconnected no mans land which has no PT connections compared that to Southern Cross in Melbourne. With all that complaining lol your video was pretty good.
We went on the sleeper service in early 1997 Melb- Adel, although we just snoozed in our seats, rather than paying extra for beds. We were with a bunch of choristers going to a choir festival in Perth so we took the “Freedom Train” all the way across to Perth. 😁 There were about 50 of us in the group that left from Adelaide.
@@SprattyD You are wrong about the NR-class loco, which is geared for passenger train speeds. This loco also hauls the “I P”, “Ghan” and “Great Southern” services.
I wish they'd renationalise that service, just so it can be better priced and run more often. But I do absolutely love the route it takes out of Adelaide, not the fastest route but a beautiful view almost the whole way edit: at least there is still the vline train+bus route daily. That is damned good value in comparison, takes about the same amount of time but does involve a few changes and doesn't come with food
Great video Josh. The fact that you can stretch your legs rather than sitting the whole way on a Bus makes this a good option without all the hassle of flying and waiting in the Airport. City center to City center on one form of transport.
My favourite Journeys Beyond passenger service. Didn't recognise the crew on this trip. Normally, Nitin is the SOM on "The Overland". Service should be expanded to 6-days a week.
As a minibus driver, I would often head to Parklands Station (fancy name for Keswick) to transfer people to the city. So often I would have bewildered train passengers approach and ask what was going on. They had been told the train went to Adelaide Railway Station and all they had to do was walk across the road to their hotel. I often saw people walking along the access road, not realizing it would take them about half an hour to get to the city. Adelaide is lovely, its government (state and local) are morons.
That is what is so useless about Keswick, with some dual gauge tracks and signalling the Overland could easily make it into ARS fine as the train is not the insane lengths of The Ghan and Indian Pacific. Also with it being in the central station daily commuters would see it and realise the Overland exists.
I travelled Melbourne to Adelaide almost exactly two years ago. I also noted the dated carriages, although they were quite comfortable. in Premium Red and how rough the Victorian side was. Overall, I enjoyed the trip, staff were good and good meals. My journey was $222 Premium Red, so costs have gone up, sign of the times unfortunately.
Looks like a lovely trip, sadly after my recent XPT experience, that is squished due to my height...probably not an issue here, and getting a sore bum, and thus fidgety, I feel this may not be for me. A shame really. I remember when those carriages were used on the Indian Pacific, which I imagine would be a challenging trip in those seats.
Check in is fairly straightforward - if they don’t issue your ticket 3 days after you departed like they did with me when I used The Overland 😂 Boy that was an awkward conversation at check in 😂
Honestly would love to take this sometime. The website seems to imply you can't bring in a carryon on the standard service though, which is a bit strange...
Really, I didn’t see that. I’m sure a bag is fine and I’m fairly sure you can check it all in, as everyone needed to check in anyway. I only had my backpack so didn’t really need to worry about all that.
I wonder if on Thursdays it’s an hour earlier because of freight trains passing and having to wait for the free single track? I haven’t taken the Overland for years but looking at the timetable on the website that’s what my thoughts are
@@martinjones5965 Google street view you shall see lol. I am sure you can waddle down there fine but if there were a few people and suitcases it would be an issue and it looks less inviting.

Journey Beyond Call-centre staff are telling me I must check in my guitar and can't take it on the train with me (opposite to XPT Syd > Mel). From your experience do you think Journey Beyond staff at boarding and on the train might be a bit more flexible about this? - in multiple Overland TH-cam videos I see all sorts of stuff in train car with passenger & overhead lockers are very under utilised. Not expecting guarantees but just your opinion please.
2:10 This guy is putting a hard case on overhead shelf. Why did they no force him to check it in? They are telling me I must check in my guitar and can't take it on train with me - RIDICULOUS - there is obviously plenty of shelf space for it.. 2:36 Train-provided foot rest.
I heard horrible stories about it from a school trip in June 1989 just before I changed schools later that month.I was spared and was allowed to book Ansett due to safety reasons not to have me on the train with the rest of the class.

Great video. Ideal length. Nice beats. Perfect pace. Welcome dry humour. With bonus travel tips!!

FYI Stawell pronounced like "Store well" and Wimmera is "Wim er ah". But still sounds exactly how you said it did when said all at once

This train once had sleeping berths. And a dining car.
It was about the same price as the airfare.
Guess the food as improved though.
I wish it still did, I would love to take that!
Yes, I travelled on it , overnight, it was good.

Is there a pedestrian footpath from Parklands Train Terminal to Anzac Hwy?
Very Narrow, that Terminal is so isolated and useless and car dependant.

I’d love to make one there, might take a while before I can get there though 🙂
@@JoshGoesSlow the problem is catching an unreliable coach to queenstown or strahan
Guessing its an hour earlier cos you go forwards half an hour due to time zones.
Yeah it is the only station to go North South East West. Melbourne only goes North South and to the west to Adelaide.

Pity Australia doesn’t do first class in anything.
For such a long and slow journey, seating could be much better. So old school and primitive and really embarrassing on international standards !!🤮
Avoid it. Patronised by drunks. After doing their final check, train staff disappear for the night, leaving passengers vulnerable.
