I see a recent trend in cutting Eckhart's answers short on his official channel. This does the teaching not any favors. Many of the dislikes come from leaving beings with an incomplete answer. If you want to convey the teaching, these short clips do the depth of truth a disservice.

It's easier to see the difference between judgement and discernment when you look at the weather not people.
Most people will say things like "today is good weather" and they will refer to sunny weather.
Saying it's good or bad is the judgement. Weather is always neutral. When you notice that it's sunny you just discern it.
When you say to yourself it's good weather instead of focusing on the reality of sunny weather which also has its drawbacks (think intense heat or sunburn) you may end up sweaty or dehydrated.
When you watch the reality instead you are more likely to prepare properly for the sunny weather by taking sunscreen, water and a hat with you.
When you think it's just good you may assume that everything is fine and you do not need any preparation.

Some of the comments here are much better then the video itself that don't really answer anything at all.

Judgement is a definite point beyond one does not go. A frame in which is the object placed. Discernment is paying attention to a condition without a judgement.. you can almost compare discernment with observation...

I found my answer to the question when he went silent. If I become silent and allow my spirit who knows all truth to provide the answer, it will guide me away from what will become an enslaved agreement to a level of freedom. When I trust and listen the heaviness instantly turns to freedom. Instant weight loss

While discernment is recognizing the facts, judgment goes a bit further, it has an emotion of disapproval. Judgment can be personal or impersonal, if it is personal then one is deriving pleasure and sense of power from it. Judgments are not necessarily bad, unless they are too personal, incorrect, of wrong intensity or exercised at the wrong time.

There is a point in human contact, where for the benefit of your own welfare, you must trust your intuition and remove yourself from an unwanted, or possibly dangerous situation.

If you discern something objectively, that's discernment.. there's no ego involved. If you discern something personally (i.e., in comparison to yourself, your ego), that's taking it personal.. that's judgment. Many of us are engaging this judgmental behavior without even being aware of it. But that's changing now :)

What is objective discernment without the ego... The only comparisons that can be "objectively" made are between perceptions of the ego. To objectively compare something you would need to step outside of your body and assess the actual objects... but then because there is no ego... what are you comparing? Vibrations?
The ego is necessary. Discernment is judgement. Justification of any kind is the ego creating comfort- humans are meant to be somewhat comfortable. Accept it. Don't try to make up excuses for it.

Wow, never seen Eckhart struggle so much with a question. It’s truly a difficult one.

I would say that judgement creates a negative emotion whereas discerment is a neutral state; you can freely choose and not being led by negativity but by intelligence. Animals smell something is rotten and back away from it and I imagine they wouldn't be complaining to their fellow animals about it :)

so.. ducks have arguments.. then they go off and flap their wings and they are fine. What do i conclude from this? I am less enlightened than a duck. :(

Discernment is...this water feels cold and that water feels hot. Judgement is...I like showering with one and drinking the other.

spoocyguy True. I wasn't watching but listening and so thought it was a break. But the thought process set on by even such a small beginning is worth it. He says His Conditioning ... so again that could change. Not My Conditioning which I have to work on.

You see, discernment isn't objective. It is always subjective.

Is think what he's trying to say is that you must transcend the conditioned persons actions by not interacting in it by thought forms(distrust as an example). That when you see the person as not his actions but rather his being then it becomes insignificant. Often times Eckhart says that when you are in the now the right situations come your way. I believe he may be saying to trust the now in a sense. However, take what I say with a grain of salt
