To those who like to criticize. Your time would be better spent enjoying whats good rather than focusing on what you think is bad. When you focus on the blemishes you miss everything else. I guess we all see what we want to see. Being critical is a reflection of what and who you are. I am gonna go enjoy some more of the endless supply of live music that TH-cam offers, ill leave you here to peck apart a golden goose for being to yellow.
I went to get John McLaughlin to sign the album cover of..love devotion surrender for me after a show...which he kindly did and then he said to me. “..it’s not fully signed until you get Carlos to sign it to.” Thanks for posting
For me it was the other way around. I've been a fan of John McLaughlin since his days with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I liked his iconic collaborations with Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu the most. For decades I thought Santana would just throw his handful of licks from Woodstock over every song he's played on since then. I thought he was completely overrated. But this recording proves me wrong. Thank you for that.
. . . or we may call it a universal language that knows no politics nor religion. It becomes an art when played by a musician. Playing an instrument is skill, the degree of which is observable by listeners. For example: th-cam.com/video/qOGfpddjhik/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/uFVCEuoY7qM/w-d-xo.html -the same song played by two different guitar players.
Nice combination of two different personalities. A few words for all those who always want to force a playing music together into a competition. Some guitarists spend a lot of time and effort in finding and rendering a beautifully coloured voice. A sound that touches your heart. Others work on complexity. Others on scales and speed. When watching guitar videos on TH-cam you often get the impression that the number of likes depends on how many notes are produced per second. I fully agree with Michael-David Bushman. Please stop making a contest out of it. Sit back and enjoy the music of two great artists.
Music is a free and powerful language, free for everybody and without any limits to play. Carlos Santana is great and John McLaughlin is great, each individual. Two sides of the same coin you know.
Pure and simple beauty! Two maestros on guitar! And for anybody who thinks this is easy, think again because never in a million years will you be able to make these great sounds on an acoustic guitar.
I would quote a sentence from SUN RA about critics in general: "I'm moving forward with my music, those who want to listen to, they're welcome i'm like the birds singing, those who don't , don't have to" and a John Mc Laughlin sentence about Carlos Santana : “Even in the mid-'60s, he had a sound and a lyricism that I absolutely loved. The way he would play was the perfect complement to what I would do. We played last year in Switzerland (at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival)… It was lovely. We went on stage, and it was like time had stood still. A very special guitar player and a very special human being. “ -- John Mclaughlin
Fabien Maurin Sun Ra was totally amazing. Still ahead as it were even now! I love the quote one of his musicians made something like this-"Sun Ra people are leaving?!" "Good,we only want those who are interested in what we are doing" or something similar!
McLaughlin has way more technical skill than most, and a lot of jazz fans dismiss Carlos, but I love his playing, too. I liked how he carried the melody and JM added lovely harmony and sweet chord work.
I like the way Carlos varies his attack by using his trademark triangular UFO plectrum for the mandolin vibrato, and then just his finger tips for the softer single notes. It goes without saying that John McLaughlin's chord work is peerless. Superb playing by both parties...
I lived with 'Love Devotion, Surrender' for a year in 75-76, and Coltrane was in the background of that. It helped pass a cold winter in Beijing. JMcL is a master, and Santana is not a bad guitarist. The original version of this tune by Comtrane was done in the hard bop era.
***** You can find the album on iTunes - It is wonderful! (I also have a vinyl album "Dos Guitarrras Flamencas en America Latina" by Paco de Lucia, which to me is disappointing and sounds like a commercial project recorded with little care or feeling.)
I love Indian music, both Hindustani and Carnatic. Anoushka Shankar's album Traveller is the most succesful fusion I have heard between Indian and flamenco music. Irish music - Tin Whistles by Paddy Molony and Sean Potts is great. It's on iTunes.
Nothing but a clear explanation of why I don't need to know you to know that only someone who has no clue what music is would comment about a guitar duet, that only one of the players was making "the real music". You have made it clear I was wrong about this part of my last comment: "You might be astute". I take it back; you've proven that it was a false statement. You really got me on that one.
Holy shit, even when I try to watch and listen to real music/musicians there are haters commenting. You damn trolls are everywhere! Even a McLaughlin/Santana duet video has shit talkers.
I know! It's ridiculous, isn't it? I thought this was a beautiful collaboration and people are downing Santana instead of listening to how well the two play together. A band is not defined by one person, it is defined by everyone on stage.
Not defending trollers...but this performance never goes anywhere remotely interesting. McLaughlin runs through the chords and Santana plays along so tentatively it's as if he's hearing the song for the first time. If you're captivated by this check our your local busker.
Why criticize? Rather, try just to be good people, (if you play) learn your instrument well, and appreciate whatever value you can get from any artist brave enough to put themselves out there for the consumption of critics. Playing sometimes entertains lots of people, and that's not a bad thing; that vs. playing for our own ego. Music is felt... it's a vibe. Lots (and lots) of people "feel" the Carlos Santana vibe... how is that fodder for criticism?
Because to a certain degree, that's how you learn. I used to be a fan of Santana, then I discovered Jazz. On e thing doesn't deter the other. Only in popular music where being unqualified is encouraged.
FAnTasTic! These Guys Have Played Together since the early 70s TheY Have Also been friends, I seen them play Together in SAnFrancisco along with Paco De Lucia an Al Dimeola All Great Musicians Of The Finest >.thank you
What you do not understand, is that Carlos Sananta, is a master guitarist, he can play with anybody, and play anything,....jazz, rock, r&b, blues, rap, latin, must I go on, he is a master guitarist.
Carlos is fine here. He's a rock guitarist who could hold his own with Clapton, Page or Beck. But Carlos is with Joh McLaughlin, and JM was able to trade notes on acoustic with one of the greatest flamenco players of all time, Paco De Lucia. JM is incredible.
@@profd65 he sounded like all he was doing was comping. How about Carlos playing the same pentatonic wank on every collaboration. John has written plenty of tunes. They won’t ever be popular because of the style.
You might be astute, but your comment was not. Obviously Santana is out of his league with JM, as are most guitarists. But to say "I know which guitar is making the real music" is to completely deny the music. No matter how much better one player is, when 2 play together, it's ridiculous to imply "the real music" is only being played by 1. Santana played the melody with respect; just because it wasn't virtuosic isn't reason to deny his part in the music; that was nonsense.
carlos and john are best friends since a long time, check their album LOVE Supreme with Sri Chinmoy, their spiritual guru in that time. Just meditate on this album and appreciate their authentic friendship :-)

Do you suppose he trained himself to temper his ego zdx ?
what you tempted by asking for his signature?
The capitalist loves to worship
To be fair I would have tried to get the signatures myself 💄💄🐖🐽🐷🤣
You’re both morons.
these guys made one of the best albums of the 1970's . nice to see them reunite .
Always amazed by McLaughlin. His knowledge of the guitar is immense.
I think of him as the mathematician of the guitar !
To me he’s the Best of the bests
Never was a big fan of McLaughlin, but Santana was like having a nanny growing up. You can see the spiritual connection these two share in some way.
For me it was the other way around. I've been a fan of John McLaughlin since his days with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I liked his iconic collaborations with Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu the most.

For me, bar none, the most soulful, impressionistic, holy rendering of Naima I have ever heard from these guitarists on Love Devotion Surrender.
Couldn't agree more. Hard to imagine how the original could be improved but they just have.
listen to Jack wilkins version
@@jcrisp90 I gave him a listen. It's very good but just doesn't resonate for me. My own personal taste of course.
Great album
Utterly unaffected. Very pure and sweet music. A more honest and human collaboration between guitarists can't be found.
Music is art, not a skills competition. I´d like to hear the wise guys who criticized Santana playing Samba pa ti.

The silence between the notes is just as important as the notes themselves. Give it space ....
It is wonderful. A great hommage to John Coltrane. Thank you
Beautiful. I like when rock virtuosos play together with jazz virtuosos in a very consistent way.
Santana played superbly, so did Mclaughlin. Ego and competition lefted their hearts and was replaced with love and respect a long time ago.
Undoubtedly the FINEST Guitar Gurus who had EVER strapped on a Guitar.. Numero Uno!!
sometimes when all you hear on the radio is tunes like "Smooth" and then you hear this and you go "Oh YEA that is also Carlos!!" God bless them both.
" Love is sweet, devotion is sweeter, surrender is sweetest."
Music is a free and powerful language, free for everybody and without any limits to play. Carlos Santana is great and John McLaughlin is great, each individual. Two sides of the same coin you know.
The chords that John picked are so incredible. What guitar hero's!
Pure and simple beauty! Two maestros on guitar! And for anybody who thinks this is easy, think again because never in a million years will you be able to make these great sounds on an acoustic guitar.
Wow so beautiful .. always good to see Carlos and John playing together
Peace and Love to Carlos and John. Namastê.

Hat off to this tune and all the other ones...Awesome Musicians. Had the privilege to see McLaughlin perform here in Italy in 1991....Unforgettable
Can you listen to great music made by great musicians without comparing or judging?
Humble & Grace they both portray yes thank you for posting

It takes me back. This is a Great DVD
Just listen to the beauty played by 2 Legends of guitar..... have most of their diverse work . No time for critics .......just music
Just two friends jammin' Beautiful!
Neither guitar is making the "real" music; Carlos and John are making it. Really.
I like the way Carlos varies his attack by using his trademark triangular UFO plectrum for the mandolin vibrato, and then just his finger tips for the softer single notes. It goes without saying that John McLaughlin's chord work is peerless. Superb playing by both parties...

It doesn't sound like you know anything about anything...

This is a very beautiful rendition of a Coltrane classic.
I would recommend anything made by Paco de Lucia, especially his album Almoraima.
na pe I would also recommend the album Siroco.

Live. One of my faves....
McLaughlin !!!! Incredible.
Je n ai jamais été impressionné par Santana car sa technique m' a toujours laissé perplexe et sur ce morceau et bien c'est flagrant !
John Coltrane' s theme. Beautiful!!!!
Brilliant Carlos and John! I love you guys!
a lovely moment at the end there
It's like watching Rembrandt and Mondrian painting in the same room if you know what I mean.
They do justice to Coltrane's prettiest ballad.

Ripple of applause for having tuned their guitars at the beginning there.
Brasil Rio de Janeiro
Santana tem humildade. Excelente guitarrista toca com sentimento, muito trabalhador. John Mc Laughlin brilhante, genial.
Sim, e verdade. Oi de Texas!
The quality of this video is astounding considering it was taken in 2011.
8 years ago. Like it was the dark ages. What a dork.
I enjoyed seeing John at a seminar in NYC. He began it by saying, "There are 2 types of guitars, out of tune and out of tune." Very inspiring to me!
Un monument magnifié par deux sculpteurs hors pair!
Regardless, both of them are the like of which we will never see again!!!!

This is synergism at its best folks;can't touch this!
damn that classical guitar sounds goood!
Two monsters of guitar!
Lovely piece. Beautiful
magic moments for the guitars!!!!
I have to hand it to JM he showed great restraint. We all know what his capable of doing.
Restraint? What are you talking about?
Have you ever heard JM solo? All he did was comp. that’s what I’m talking about.
super solo merçi carlos bravo vraiment une tret belle musique
Beautiful guitar music!
Gorgeous - a guitar marriage made in heaven.
Give Carlos Santana a break. I like them both for different reasons and lots of people love Santana.
Fantastique chapeau bravo l'ensemble des artistes incroyable talent j'adore

never!!!!!!
Your, crazy. Playing the melody of a Jazz tune, isn’t playing jazz.. I guarantee you Carlos couldn’t comp for John if they switched roles......
Play in any style? He plays his blues influenced licks over other genres.
Magical! Two Greats!
That was nice. I'd like to see more of them.
pure music beautiful
defusing the mental tension..Here they r now....life goes on ...
just a lesson of MUSIC ( how to harmonize a melody) AMAZING!
MAGICS
