HI Hilary, this video was great - so informative and helpful! Quick question I've been experimenting with natural dyes from veggies on a hemp/cotton blend fabric. The light/colorfastness of the dyes hasn't been great - do you think this may be because I have been using Potassium aluminum sulfate rather than alum acetate?
Hi Sister James- nice to meet you! I love that you are experimenting with food stuff as dye. The lightfastness of food-stuff is not great- because most are known as fugitive dyes and have been tested over time. I would need to know which food stuff you are using. Also I do recommend Aluminum Acetate for cotton and Potassium Aluminum Sulfate for protein. PAS can be combined with tannin on cotton as a mordant. 3 dyestuff you can try with PAS are Pomegranate skins, Avocado pits and skins (both high in tannin) and onion skins- try the latter with and without mordanting. I hope this is helpful!
@@hilarylhahncoach Hi HIlary, thank you so much for your reply. I'm mainly dying with avo skins and onions skins and always use the same hemp/cotton blend fabric. Perhaps I'll the PAS with these food stuffs. Thank you so much
@@ringridj The PAS certainly helps with Onion Skins. With avocado over time it generally turns to beige. I hope this is helpful! I really love cotton hemp blends. I find mine needs to be well scoured.
Hilary, I love this video for reminders! And for your excellent on line natural dye classes!
Thank you, Sharon. It's wonderful having you in the dye group. We all learn from doing, and our dye practices grow!
Thanks so much for this video. It’s helped me enormously ☺️
Glad it helped you!
This is extremely helpful! Thank you!!!
So happy I could help! Please feel free to join our community of dyers at www.hilarylhahn.com
