    Green Matamp GT120 MV: Input - 1st Gain Stage - Depth / FAC - Gain Knob - 2nd Gain Stage - Bax EQ - PI - MV - Presence
    Orange OR120 Overdrive: Input - 1st Gain Stage - Bax EQ - Gain Knob - 2nd Gain Stage - Depth / FAC - PI - MV - Presence
    In this video we’re going to be comparing a Green Matamp GT120 and an Orange OR120 Overdrive. Both amps have a factory Post Phase Invertor MV control with a gain knob to adjust the amount of preamp gain, both amps feature a Depth or FAC control-this control is a variable high pass filter, adjusting the knob changes the lower cutoff frequency of the filter impacting the amount of low frequency bass signal we are allowing to pass through it. Both amps feature a 2-band Baxandall EQ along with a presence control, and both amps put out 120w RMS clean power.
    The circuit elements between the two are very similar with one notable difference, which is the location of the Depth / FAC knob and the EQ sections in the signal path.
    With the Matamp we have our input, followed by our first gain stage, followed by our Depth / FAC control, followed by the gain control, which leads into the 2nd gain stage before hitting the two band Bax EQ and heading into the Phase invertor and the power amp section.
    With the Orange, we have our input, followed by our first gain stage, followed by our two band Bax EQ, followed by the gain control, which leads into the 2nd gain stage before hitting the Depth / FAC control and heading into the Phase invertor and the power amp section.
    So essentially the Depth / FAC and EQ sections are swapped between the two amps. In the Matamp we hit the Depth knob early and EQ late, in the Orange we hit the EQ early and the FAC knob late.

    Hi Steve, the Orange design gives the amp far more clarity in the mids. I have a reissue Orange Overdrive but the original Matamp vs the Original Orange overdrive (I’ve owed about 5 of those) is really interesting. I’ve done some amp comparison videos on my channel but they don’t do as well because so many people have switched to modelers these days and many of them have never played through a tube amp! Well done comparison!

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      Thanks so much for watching, Rick! I’ve always wanted to get my hands on an original white faced Matamp GT100 to do the comparison. Hopefully someday. Amp demos tend to do relatively well with the doom crowd, so if people like this comparison style vid I will definitely do more. 🐐🤘🏻

      Roaring crunching barking mids are great but it's always easier to take away than it is to add tho right? May be times where the orange cant get as brutal and crushing of a deep fuzz tone as the matamp due to that, I dunno. Btw your channel is one of my favs @Rick Beato, especially loved the professional practice methods tips for guitar, but also literally any topic you cover is always a good time. Like that swervedriver live stream! Or all the various industry insight when it comes to the mainstream. Cheers and thanks for contributing to the greater good 💪👍👍👍

      Great taste in music btw rick, your love of radiohead, deftones, allan holdsworth, swervedriver, all the music history knowledge, the non-corny "djent" that's out there, and apparently doom/sludge (as you're here) is proof of that

    • @whiskeycan529

      @@drlogic5854 I would be genuinely curious to hear Rick's (and anyone else's) analysis of Earth. Like maybe Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull. They're one of my favorite bands but I genuinely don't know what makes their songs great. Every time I think about that question I'm like, "on paper, this should be terrible" but it's just the opposite and I have no idea why. I know I should just let it go and enjoy, which I mostly do, but there's a code there and I'd love to crack it. Same with Sunn0))).
      And this is coming from someone who has been writing punk, hardcore and doom for 20 years.

      I’ve got a reissue or80 and I know it’s cliche, but it really does something magical when you push the master volume. This demo kept it at noon. It’s not just a mind trick with a loud volume. It really gets amazing even with an attenuator on the amp output.

      @@DoesItDoom Its all the bite and clarity and thinned out bottom end from one amp, and all the crushing sludgy fuzz thunder from another. Works like a charm, all that gain but your pick attack still shines through, plus a tiny bit of added chord clarity....gotta get the gain on the biting/crunchy amp to be at that nice sweetspot where its the minimum gain it can be while still not sticking out like a sore thumb against the backdrop of maximum gain wall crumbling destruction, when it comes to that
      I'll do this and get the big fat high gain scoopy sound out of fuzzes into a SS amp (but still girthy and snarling, just scooped enough to be that classic massive wall of sound thing, you know what i mean )- and then i get the raunchy crunch from my mesa with no gain pedals run into it, so my board is split into two signal flows (and this mesa i have is really like a marshall not a mesa)

    • @eternalvoid2678
      @eternalvoid2678 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Not really more expensive than an Orange. Considering the Matamps are hand built in the UK and you get to decide how it's voiced if you buy new, I'd say they're very good value. Buying used is also an option of course, I got a 1224 in perfect condition (literally not a speck of dust to be found) with a flight case for 1300 (which is a typical price). Also keep in mind that if you buy new, shipping is included in the price.

    I’m an Orange owner and supporter 100%, IMO for the riff and tuning being played I prefer the Matamp. It has a warmer, bigger tone for the vibe, but it seems to stay in that ballpark indefinitely, whereas the Orange is able to dip into that waist deep but also expand out of that arena too.

    Clearly, you must have both simultaneously for maximum results. The mid-range cut and top-end clarity from the Orange combined with the enormous low end and wooly saturation of the Matamp are a match made in tone heaven. For Fog Giant, I get pretty close with my Belov Matamp GTO 200w clone set for maximum depth and girth added to either my Orange AD140 or OR50 set heavily towards mids and highs and lower gain.

    I think when demoing a solo instrument your ear naturally prefers the one that is fuller or more balanced across the whole frequency range(the green?). However that full range tone is often lost or muddies up the mix, when competing with other instruments. I would want to hear how they compare in the mix as well before I decided. Cool amps!

    Both amazing amps! I have a tech question about your videos. It says that you are using the Captor. I just picked one up and I was curious about if you have ever had any issues running these high wattage amps into it. I have read about the Matamp GT120 spiking higher than 120 watts when it is hit with a fuzz pedal or other boost, and I would think that would fry the Captor. Also, do you use the same impulse responses for the videos you use the Captor with or do you mix it up?

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’ll notice that I rarely run the MV above much above 1/2 way, that is to keep the power output below the 100W rating of the captor. If I ran the OR or GT at full on the MV, I assume it would fry the captor and potentially an output transformer in the process. Typically I use the onboard cabsim on the captor, but you can get great results using their Wall of Sound software, it just takes more time and I like having the consistency of using the same cab sim all the time. I will probably upgrade to the Captor X once it hits the used markets.

      Thanks for the reply! I figured that was the case. My main amp is an early 70s Ampeg V4, and I have to be careful about the wattage of the speakers I’m running it into. I’ve used the Torpedo Cab before and have a bunch of IRs that I dig, but I always love the tones you get so I thought I would ask. Thanks again!

    Great Job Steve! They both have some tonal similarities, but the Green has this round low end I like. The Orange definitely puts out more treble tones and retains a bit more clarity than the Green does. I think the EQ placement in the amp makes quite the difference. With the Orange, you're EQing before you drive it. Whereas the Green is being driven and then EQ'd. The FAC controller in the chain is also an interesting variable. Personally, I like that big blown out sound the Green puts out. The Orange is still great, but as I love the Dopesmoker tone - Green wins in my book. Cheers!

    Been a while since ive popped in to the channel as ive been busy loving my own gear (and trying to kick my youtube addiction LOL)
    awesome vid. Its great to have a guy doin' it right, instead of these unscientific bozo's recording with their cellphone from a vid that was uploaded in 2012 lol
    I prefer the sound of the matamp. Much more body to the sound, and i prefer the way the gain behaves. I know the orange has that midrange crunch thing going on, but, if you absolutely needed that for a section of a song, i bet if you hit the matamp with a Klon or Tubescreamer type pedal you could easily get it sounding similar to the orange, with a cut low end and thus pronouncing the mids in turn (as its all relative when it comes to EQ) But damn thats an expensive preference lol. Luckily, i get a similar sound out of my SS 120w crate 2x12 combo amp ahah, hey no hate, Kurt Ballou of Converge (love that dude) just put out a (300$ o.O ...pass) signature pedal that is literally just a clone of a crate's preamp circuit in a pedal format, i blame the shitty out of tune Enter Sandman and Nirvana riffs played through their cheaper amps, all throughout the 90s and 2000s, for their tonal reputation lol (and another part of their bad reputation - their crap build quality - admittedly, even the case with their high end stuff - all plastic junk that falls apart, knobs and jacks soldered direct to the circuit board which means one day the amp will simply cease to function until you go and reflow those solder joints, or god forbid the board cracks lol. But, to me, thats all a GOOD thing, if you can find a working one, cause that means the - good - crate stuff is also cheap af now by association, and if yours breaks after only a year of use, well, at least it was only 100$ and you can get another lol)

    Genuine question for a newbie to Matamp, do these amps even do clean? Or are they just doom machines? I've read Peter Green used to play these amps, his tone was awesome, but I don't remember it being that out of control.

    • @DoesItDoom
      @DoesItDoom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter’s Series 2000 was likely a cleaner amp than this GT120MV. I wouldn’t say this particular amp does cleans well at all tbh. Most of Peter’s classic FM tone is Fender stuff. To me his classic live tone is the ‘68 Fender Dual Showman Reverb which is basically endless clean headroom.

      @timsullivan1940 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoesItDoom thanks! That’s quite the informative response. My other question is, and sorry if this is a really dumb one, how loud is that Matamp in the room you were playing in? Is that thing peeling the paint off the wall or is it manageable? Im aware that the post phase inverter master volumes sometimes don’t do much. I have one on my amp, the type 3 or whatever it is, and it’s super sensitive up to “9:00” on the dial, and then it’s basically at full blast. I saw you had yours at “12:00,” which is why I ask.
      Great video by the way. Not gonna lie, when you started talking at the beginning, I was thinking, “oh shit. This guy is going to talk instead of demo the amp.” But the information you covered was great. I only know a little bit about amp design, but I love how you broke down and explained the stages and the order of those stages within each of the amps. Lastly I’ll add that I liked the Matamp over the Orange. It sounded more “unique” to me. I felt like the orange sounded like a clean amp running a dirt pedal, where the Matamp sounded like the tone that pedal enthusiasts can only dream of. Relative to other amps, I’d say it’s still a close call between them. Great job again and thanks for the response.

    Dang. This is just Part 1, right? 6 minutes and you only scratched the surface. For the next videos of this shootout I suggest you cut to each amp after a setting has been changed. All the knob turning took away from the intended comparison/shoot out because that’s too much variation in tone to specifically remember the contrast between the Green and the Orange. I also suggest that you compare the power amps from low volume to high volume by using the return inputs with a clean preamp so that we can hear how that contributes to the overall tone of each amp. I love how this setup sounded. I’m looking forward to the future definitive 45 minute shootout (ha ha!) It’s gonna take A LOT of editing, but it would be a great archival resource.
