  • In this episode of TMFS I talk to Dr. Peter Kreeft, professor of philosophy at Boston College, about his conversion to the Catholic faith, why he loves Thomas Aquinas, his thoughts about Pope Francis, Dostoevsky (obviously) and the best arguments for God and atheism ... and much else besides.

We're so indebted to Dr. Kreeft. He came and gave a talk to 5 young adults starting a group in Boston. As we learned about his reputation, we became only more embarrassed at how few people we had back then. It grew up into a rather sizable group and learned a lot about the Lord's will and ministry in the church, but we still remain embarrassed about that first meeting.

I so enjoy Dr Kreeft -- even more when I found out he at least thinks its possible that our pets end up in heaven with us. As he so eloquently puts it, "Why not?". Also, as an introvert myself who dreads small talk -- I consider it a part of Catholic charity and love of neighbor to make it as I notice it puts many at ease and it makes a small human connection if you cheerfully do it while waiting in line or with the clerk at a store. And as much as I want to hide away at parties, again, I can help others feel more comfortable if I can reach out to them and converse with them. So, as uncomfortable as I find it -- I see it as a charitable act.

When someone says I think cynicism is a result of people just being bored, it kind of discounts the true misery a great portion of humans are now living in, People with great suffering, would probably not describe themselves as bored. They are too busy trying to survive to have the luxury of being bored. I feel like some people really need a trip outside of the castle, if you know what I'm saying. A person's natural childlike wonderment is often destroyed by hardship, injustice, the sins of others and their own

I think we do know that there are plenty of souls in hell. And it is because of how easily Souls can grow into hell that our lady commanded us to pray fervently for them. If you think that Souls do not go to hell then you don't pray for them. If you are convinced that it is entirely possible for souls to go to hell you will pray fervently for them if you care for them. I think we can have hope for an individual soul that it might repent at the last moment and be saved. But that's different from believing to hell is empty

Ppl like Peter Kreeft n Tim Gordon has so much to say. Personally I'm bit disappointed for the lack of professionalism here. Check Eric Metaxes Radio show a kind of interview to learn from.

miguel O Are you suggesting that people only disliked the Gordon interview because they can’t handle the truth? I disliked it because of his snide, repeated comments about chubby women and such. I didn’t get very far into the interview for that reason alone. When you insult someone’s appearance, the strength of your actual argument is easily overlooked. I sincerely hope that he doesn’t speak or think that way regularly and that he made errors in judgment that day.

Just wanted to point out how funny it is that you said that the Eastern Orthodox get angry when you nail things down.
I was amused and I think Jesus would have been too.
Best interview ever, will be watching this multiple times. We had puppies at my college when Trump got elected too, and one of my teachers paused opening class to ask if anyone needed to talk it out, "Are you okay? Does anyone need to talk?" So being sensitive and docile, I raised my hand and said I voted for Trump. I also hung out with the puppies, because they're the very best.

Can ask a question from Peter Kreeft? Why you said in the book You can Understand the Bible that Man made from the dust of the earth is like taking an ape and made him a man?
    Extraction from his book
The Key yQuestion Is Why, Not How
Did God use evolution? He may have. Genesis
is not a science text. so it does not tell s how
so much as why. But there are hints. Only
three times in the creation account is hara'
used: for the creation of matter (1:1), life
(1:21), and humanity (1:27). The other times,
God said, "let the waters bring forth
"let the earth bring forth..." That is, for most
of His acts of "creation", He made rather than
created. For example, He used thepre-existing
material of "the dust of the earth" to make
man. Was that an ape body? Perhaps. Why
    not?
Why use ape as an example?

JP II for sure had ADD.
King James is the best English translation of all time. Still use it as a Catholic after converting.

Matt, this started out super weak. But as you said at the beginning, at about the 20 minute mark you turned a corner and it became one of my favorite interviews with one of my living Catholic heroes. Well done.

I couldn't understand the name of the book Dr. Kreeft is describing as the opposite of a Tolstoy book being the best book ever written.
