    This lens is awesome for real estate. A tad heavy I'm sure, but stopping down to f/6.3 or so is typical for flash real estate so it didn't need to be so large. The quality is so good though and excellent focal lengths. Only issue I've had is color temperature doesn't always work right in auto with this lens (things look way orange by default) so even though shooting in raw it must be corrected in post, or set manually prior to taking. 14mm is so much fun to shoot with. It's like seeing the world in a whole new way. Distortion isn't even too bad.. also love the build quality. Excellent lens.

    I discovered one thing about this Sigma E mount lens. Even if it zooms, it is still a block lens/prime lens. Because when you dial the zoom, the whole assemby moves back and forth. From front to back, the elements never separate from eachother 😎

    35mm 1.2 would be really interesting. In PhillipReeve's review, the 40mm 1.4 is better corrected and has really good coma performance. Might make sense to have a 40mm Sigma and a 40mm Batis for travel and the close focus making it versatile for travel.

    Dustin thanks for this review. I am so close to buying this lens but am looking for the best possible lens for low light event photography for the mirrorless Sony system (dance floor wedding pics etc). Think it would hold up and focus quickly without hunting? Have issues with that on the Tamron 28-75mm.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the lens focuses better than the 28-75, but I've had good success with the Tamron. If the lighting is low enough that an F2.8 aperture is the limiting principle, you might need to switch to a prime with a wider maximum aperture.

    This might be an ideal combo with the Tammy 28-70, even if there's 4mm in the middle of missing coverage. (I'd love to go with the Tammy 17-28, but I do RE photography and many homes have powder rooms for which the 17mm is just too narrow.)

    I just ordered this lens, now in 2021. I moved from Canon to Sony Alpha when the A7iii came out and so far I have a range of Sony lenses up to and including the 200-600mm G lens but I was lacking a wide-angle and was considering the 12-24mm Sony GM but at that price and feeling the 14mm will be wide enough this seems like a great option. Your chat convinced me to give it a try. Thank you.

    The sigma is definetely something else! Not sure if you mentioned anything about the minimum focus distance? I listened to the whole video during my editing process lol
    I think if you'd consider the Tamron then you already must have the 28-75 and want to have the other Tamron E-Mount lenses that just been announced. So then you have a complete line up with Tamron. Meaning all same filter size, quality and lower price in overal.

    Many thanks for the great review! I am always curious on how zooms compare to primes. If you are familiar with the Batis 18mm and Batis 25mm, would you say that they have an advantage in terms of sharpness and color rendition over this lens or not? I am aware that individually they are much smaller than this lens though. thanks!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've reviewed both those lenses, and I would say that they don't really have any significant advantages. The Batis 18mm might have a minor sharpness edge in the center of the frame, but not the edges, and has more distortion. The 25mm is sharper along the edges but doesn't have as much contrast as the 18mm, so I don't think it would have any major advantage over the Sigma. I didn't directly compare them, however.

    Great review Dustin! Good to see you’re recovered from the injury last month. I’d like to ask for your opinion: I have the opportunity to buy this Sigma for only US$211 more than the Tamron 17-28 RRP (due to a camera store sale). I would be using it for low light social dancing videography on a gimbal, where there is cramped space and I can see the 14mm would be super useful as I might be close to the dancers, but I also would love to take landscape shots (especially some long exposure landscape shots at the beach) and would love to get into astrophotography. I’m quite torn because I have just purchased a Tamron 28-75 and could pop a filter onto both Tamrons, and I have read that it is just really inconvenient and not as good to put the gel filter on the back of the Sigma. But the 14mm would be better than the 17mm and for only $211 more, I would normally pick up the Sigma if not for the bulbous front lens and lack of filter option 😔 Your thoughts on which one I should purchase?
    Keep up the great reviews!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a tough decision. Unfortunately you'll probably have to decide based on your priorities - does have the great width for your recitals take precedence of the need for filtering? My gut is for you to go with the Sigma, as in many situations for landscapes you will be able to use filters on the Tamron 28-75mm and still get reasonable framing. I will be reviewing some rear filter options for the Sigma shortly, so there are some good choices on the way!

    Hi Dustin. Great review! I am looking to replace my Sony Zeiss 16-35 F4 lens. It has served me well but I’d like to have something with a wider aperture. The 16-35 F4 is the only lens I have with less than 24mm. I also would like to get into astrophotography too but have been told I need a lens with at least 1.8 aperture.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this is a good option if you want to go wider (and with a wider aperture). As for Astro, I consider F2.8 to be the minimum that is really useful. It really does depend on your conditions, but in many cases, F2.8 is sufficient to keep the ISO at a reasonable level.

  • @jasona2305
    @jasona2305 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Several years back, when FE was still 'under development' with several lenses missing from the new line up, critics used to say that due to the FE mount being narrow, it would make lenses for this mount much more complex from a technical point of view, in a way that eventually they ll lose the battle to the usual suspects (i.e. Z and RF rivals). Now, several years after, FE mount has filled up their lens options significantly (except maybe few more tele options e.g. 400mm and above)
    Now, considering this 14-24mm Sigma, which is UWA (hence the narrow FE mount should pose some issues...), and being able to live up to it's expectations, isn't that the proof that Sony will manage to pull this through? I mean, surely, both Nikon and Canon have the means to catch up eventually, but do you really believe that Sony dig their own grave when it comes to chosing to go with the narrower mount design? If you were starting now (as a PRO photographer), which system would you chose?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be in the long run that the bigger mount makes a difference, but to this point Sony has done just fine with their mount. There are a lot of fantastic lenses in E mount.

      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is probably unnecessarily wide for many group shots (though that's not true if it is a tight space), but the big advantage is that you would have far less distortion at 20-24mm than if you used the 24-70mm for the same shot.

  • @jasona2305

    I am really glad I ve seen this (and thanks Dustin for yet another thorough lens review!)
    I am in need of a WA FE *native* lens and somehow I missed the news of this lens being released a year ago!
    I wanted something preferably wider than the Loxia 21 and the options I had in mind were the Batis 18mm, Sony 12-24mm and also tempted by the latest 1.8 20mm Sony G (although I d still prefer something wider as I said!). 16-35GM is out of my budget, hence not considered at all.
    My use for the lens, would be mostly landscape (nature & architecture), but also some astro. Hence I was having my doubts about the f4 12-24mm Sony.
    The new Sigma is wide enough and in theory ticks all the boxes for my requirements.
    In terms of IQ/resolution, does it really stack up even against the Batis (both at 18mm of course!)? If it does, I find it pretty amazing - how can a zoom compete with a (top) prime as the Batis!
    I also have a query - more of a technical nature: What is the focal length that one expects to see minimum/neglectible of that 'fish-eye' effect that most WA lenses have (the Sigma included). I understand that no lens can ignore the laws of physics, but what focal length is safe to say that this distortion is minimal or not to an extend that 'stretches' otherwise fine lines into an oval shape? But as I said, I understand that its not physically possible to have an ultra WA lens with no distortion at all.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think there is a major difference between the two lenses optically. The Batis is better in the center; the Sigma in the corners. You'll get a pretty distortion-free experience from 18-20mm range on the zoom.

    • @jasona2305
      @jasona2305 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI It seems that most decent (and above) lenses are stronger in the center and get soft towards the edges. This Sigma seems to be an exception to this rule - it's uniform from center to edge. So a direct comparison with the Batis 18mm, makes the Sigma look 'soft' in the center (in comparison). I d expect it to have more similarities with some of the Loxia range (especially the 25mm) which from previous review I remember you saying that also has a more uniform profile from center to edge.
      Also - about the size - I hear people complaining that 'it's too heavy/bulky' - well it has been redesigned for FE, lost some of it's weight/bulk compared to the DSLR version - I mean you can't expect a zoom lens of such wide focal length have the same size as a Loxia..!
      All-in-all, if money is not a consideration, would you agree that this is the best UWA lens you can get for FE at the moment? (I mean for someone who is looking a landscape multipurpose + astro lens!) It almost seems to pack virtues that you d usually expect from a prime (around that focal length)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do think it is the best wide angle zoom on FE at the moment.

    • @jasona2305
      @jasona2305 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I think the my sweet spot is 17mm. My prime contestant was the 18mm Batis, since it's probably the top quality option within my budget. Resolution is top notch on the Batis, it's got AF which I like (and MF experience which I don't!), it's weather sealed (important for me). This Sigma's got all these, proper MF experience for when I need it, plus some more FL range I could use if needed, but will cost me some 200USD more (that's the price gap where I m at!). Although 200USD isn't neglectible, since both lenses are within my budget, I don't want money to be the determinant factor. I just want to grab what will give me the best IQ for my FL and as much as possible future-proofness, in terms of resolution, when I move towards a FF body (I m still on APS-C...)
      I was hoping that somewhere along the way, there would be a Loxia 15mm (as there was a Milvus 15mm), but that would still have me perplexed, as I d like to have that AF.
      I have also checked the previous reviews you did on the 14-24mm (but for Canon EF) via MC-11. So how does the native Sony FE version of the Sigma compares to the Canon (on a Canon body I mean!)?
      So, yes, all in all, it's a tough one, I m still undecided. Still looking at image samples of both (Batis + Sigma), trying to make comparisons, whilst I should probably toss a coin and let that decide for me!

I alter the Mark Galer www.markgaler.com/sony-alpha-custom-settings-and-support settings for video from shutter priority to manual and the flicker seems to have stopped so far. This must be something to do with the shutter priority on the Sigma lens while doing video. This didn't happen on any of the Sony glass I have. I didn't try on with the MC-11 and Canon glass...

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Do tell.
      I find it hard to believe Sigma would translate a "native" Canon AF algorithm to Sony. Unquestionably my Sigma FE lenses AF MUCH more reliably and faster than my Canon lenses with a Metabones IV, which is purportedly better than the MC-11.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not at all true with Sigma lenses. The MC-11 is specifically designed for Sigma lenses; the Metabones isn't. Your Sigma FE lenses (outside of the three new lenses - this one, 45mm F2.8, and 35mm F1.2) have essentially an MC-11 built into the housing near the lens mount. If you look at the back of your lenses, you will see there is a deep space before you get to any lens elements.

However, to suggest you have *proof* that an integrated MC-11-- i.e., hardware AND SOFTWARE are mounted on the earlier E-mount lenses is a complete falsehood. I find it increasingly difficult to take your reviews seriously.

    On the contrary, Sigma lenses are truly junky when compared to quite a few other brands.
    Trust me, because I've owned Sigma lenses, and it's not as if Sigma has a stellar reputation anyway.
    Fragile autofocus motors, and not particularly sharp. But at least they "feel" very solid.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tested almost all the lenses that Sigma has produced in the past 6-7 years, and I can say with certainty that I've not found anything you've described to be true. I HAVE seen inconsistent focus with earlier lenses, but recent Sigma lenses have focused just fine. I own one Sigma lens at the moment, have owned about 5 others. I've never had any of them break down.

    • @scotthullinger9955
      @scotthullinger9955 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not necessarily talking about Sigmas breaking down. They're just not a total package.
      One of my Sigma lenses hardly has a smooth working autofocus motor, and another one is quite soft, a moderate telephoto zoom lens for DX format cameras. Testing a lens is hardly the same thing as owning a lens and using it extensively. But I dunno, maybe the newer Sigmas are better?
      As for lenses which are a stellar value, they include many Nikkor lenses which have been around for quite a while, the ones with the ultrasonic autofocus motors, and those two stellar DC lenses, Defocus Image Control. Those things are built like a tank! But I also have a much cheaper quality construction Nikkor zoom lens of more recent vintage. Basically, you get what you pay for. But sometimes, even when you pay a pretty penny for something, you still get junk. As for great third party lenses, they truly include the recent vintage Tamron lenses which are worth every penny. Tokina also has a few fine quality lenses, also built like a tank and great image quality. My favorite oddball lens of theirs is an old fish eye zoom lens. Yes, a ZOOM lens.
