Have you thought of using PVC piping for the center and using thick dowels rods for the supports under the wooden plates? You could drill the holes through the PVC pipes to to insert the thick dowel rods through to a half way point, thus making it easier to assemble and breakdown. Still use the same method for the base that you demonstrated. It would be so heavy with using the 4x4, plus you would be able to break it down and store it until next year. The pvc pipe can be purchase in 4” or 6” widths and in large lengths. You can also purchase dowel rods or wooden closet rods to run through the center of the pvc pipe to stabilize it even more, again maybe drilling a hole through the pvc pipe and the rod to inset a metal pin in it to hold in place and easy to remove and disassemble. These are just thoughts I had as I want to build this too. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Hey Susan. Thanks so much for the ideas on the tree. To be honest...this was built "on the fly" one Saturday morning. My wife said she would like to have one....and WHAMMO! I really like the idea of the PVC pipe for the center. I can see using maybe a 4 inch schedule 40 pipe. It would definitely be lighter than the 4x4 I use. Instead of the wooden dowels, I might use shelf brackets....those small metal brackets bent in a 90 degree angle....and screw them to the PVC pipe. While I read your ideas, my mind was whirring away building another one. Thank you again for sending me your thoughts. Don't be surprised if you see them in another video ;) Merry Christmas!!!

Ran into a snag with the 2x6. Cutting it at 24" sticks out from the bottom of the base. Is it supposed to stick out? Thinking of cutting them to 19" and maybe taper down at 10". At 19" it won't stick out of bottom disk. Don't know let me see how it turns out. Thanks for the video.

I built a 6 level tree and cut all the circles out of a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood with a 36" base decreasing by 5"s on each level. Saves the cost of a sheet of plywood in 2021...lol. Same 4 x 4 center post also.
I absolutely love this I had thought about going this route before I put my Christmas village up on the dining room table which we never use but I wasn’t sure how to change the sizes of the disc and so forth so your video has really helped with that but quick question I’m wondering if and how I would go about making the lights for each individual house how I would run that down the pole and so forth I thought about taking some thing to wrap around the pole to hide all of the extension cords for the houses the Christmas village is my fathers he had a massive one he passed away at the beginning of this year so I really wanted to have some thing of his in our home for Christmas
I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I lost mine in 94. Still miss him. To help you on your question about the lights...I've used a strand of Christmas tree lights to illuminate our houses. The old fashioned lights with the screw in bulbs works best. With those you can put a bulb where you want it and not light the entire strand. Hope that helps.

You're welcome Melanie! I used a drill and a jig saw. You might be able to rent those at Home Depot or, check around where you live for a tool rental store.
I think you did an outstanding job I wanna do one next year. Not a criticism but a suggestion how about putting the base of the tree on a rotating disc so we can see the tree rotate. 🎄🎊🎉👌🏼👍🏻
We had thought about that, but didn't have the electrical tools for that. I would suggest putting felt pads on the bottom of the legs. Makes moving it around when you're decorating it a little easier on a hardwood floor.

Covid is going to stop me getting the supplies this year but with your wonderful tutorial, I'll be able to take my time through the summer making it. Your instructions are spot on thank you. Can I just ask how you store it please? Do you just unscrew and take it apart each year? Would that make the screw holes weak over time? Best wishes Karen
Hello Karen. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Yes, I just take it apart and store it flat. If you'd like, you could place some blocks of wood between the discs to keep them from touching each other. As far as the screw holes weakening, they shouldn't weaken by using them once or twice a year.
I'm going to put mine under the "snow". May cut a sheet to lay on top of each disk, then sprinkle the snow on top of that. Instead of attaching the lights to the underside of each disk, you could just lay them on the top of each disk (where your houses will be) and run the wire own the post to the bottom. You can hide the wire behind the post.

Great tutorial. I'm done cutting everything. Just have to put it together. Do the 2x6 stick out of the 36" disc? Also can you confirm on the 2x6 that it is 19 and not 9 where the taper starts? I did at 19 and the angle doesn't look like yours. Thanks

Hey Jennifer. You can use the metal brackets as long as they are long enough to support the weight of the disk and whatever you're putting on it. Thanks for the question!
Yes you can. Someone had suggested using those metal shelf brackets to hold the disk's in place instead of the wooden pieces I made. That will really help in putting the tree up an taking it down.
Just wanted to let you you know that I got my tree all finished last night and because of your video it turned out 100 times been then I could imagined! I did end up using bolts and nuts to the base so the screws wouldn't waller out over time when I take it apart every time!!
Never ask the wife's opinion in the middle of the build because she'll throw a Monkey wrench in the middle, now she wants another shelf and I have to figure out how to fit it proportionally and aesthetically in between, man I tell ya!
Yes it can. You may want to "modify" your build just a little. If I had to do it over....I would have painted the wood instead of using spray snow. Cleaner to handle when taking apart and storing.
Hello Paul. We store ours in an outbuilding on our property. You could make it collapsable, but it would weigh a ton when you tried to move it. As soon as I can slow down a little, I want to build a lighter version. Thanks for watching, and for the question.
I just reverse assembly and store it in a stack. I really want to come up with a more portable way of storing...but it would involve metal fabrication, and that isn't something a lot of people are able to do.
We wanted to make the shelves removable and adjustable so we added a metal adjustable shelf strip channel on the four sides to mount shelf brackets and made the center square bigger to accommodate it
The 2x2's can be whatever you'd feel comfortable with. They do need to be long enough to keep the disc they are supporting from "tipping". I realized I was sort of foggy describing the base....The length of the 2x6 was inches. Measure 19 from the top side that will be against the post...then taper it down to the end. I'm sorry about that glitch.

I actually got 35 beautiful houses that a neighbor was throwing away so my daughters in laws are interested in having one too
I am so sorry that I'm just seeing your reply. TH-cam doesn't do that great of a job notifying me when someone comments on my videos. To answer your questions....I do want to build another that is easier to take apart and store. I had thought of making the disc's out of thinner plywood and making them to hinge where they could be folded in half for storage. I also do some welding and thought of fabricating a metal stand. That would be as strong but very light. As far as houses, I'm not really sure. I guess it would depend on the size of the houses. The ones we uses are fairly large...and we can put around 25 or so and have room for more. Again, so sorry for the late reply. Hope this answered your questions.

Would that make the screw holes weak over time?

Hello Karen. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Yes, I just take it apart and store it flat. If you'd like, you could place some blocks of wood between the discs to keep them from touching each other. As far as the screw holes weakening, they shouldn't weaken by using them once or twice a year.

thanks sorry for your lost as well I thought about the light strand to use to light up the houses but wondering how I would hide all the wires
I'm going to put mine under the "snow". May cut a sheet to lay on top of each disk, then sprinkle the snow on top of that. Instead of attaching the lights to the underside of each disk, you could just lay them on the top of each disk (where your houses will be) and run the wire own the post to the bottom. You can hide the wire behind the post.

Great tutorial. I'm done cutting everything. Just have to put it together. Do the 2x6 stick out of the 36" disc? Also can you confirm on the 2x6 that it is 19 and not 9 where the taper starts? I did at 19 and the angle doesn't look like yours. Thanks
Good catch on the 2x6. I watched the video, and I was wrong on that measurement. It is 9 and not 19. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Hey Jennifer. You can use the metal brackets as long as they are long enough to support the weight of the disk and whatever you're putting on it. Thanks for the question!

Yes you can. Someone had suggested using those metal shelf brackets to hold the disk's in place instead of the wooden pieces I made. That will really help in putting the tree up an taking it down.

Just wanted to let you you know that I got my tree all finished last night and because of your video it turned out 100 times been then I could imagined! I did end up using bolts and nuts to the base so the screws wouldn't waller out over time when I take it apart every time!!

Yes. We put ours together with deck screws so it can be taken apart and stored.

Yes it can. You may want to "modify" your build just a little. If I had to do it over....I would have painted the wood instead of using spray snow. Cleaner to handle when taking apart and storing.
This is great but how on earth so you store it? Isn’t there a way to make it collapsible?
Hello Paul. We store ours in an outbuilding on our property. You could make it collapsable, but it would weigh a ton when you tried to move it. As soon as I can slow down a little, I want to build a lighter version. Thanks for watching, and for the question.

How do you disassemble to put away for the year?
I just reverse assembly and store it in a stack. I really want to come up with a more portable way of storing...but it would involve metal fabrication, and that isn't something a lot of people are able to do.
We wanted to make the shelves removable and adjustable so we added a metal adjustable shelf strip channel on the four sides to mount shelf brackets and made the center square bigger to accommodate it

Kelly, how long are the 2x2's? And will you please check your measurements for the base? I'm confused.
The 2x2's can be whatever you'd feel comfortable with. They do need to be long enough to keep the disc they are supporting from "tipping". I realized I was sort of foggy describing the base....The length of the 2x6 was inches. Measure 19 from the top side that will be against the post...then taper it down to the end. I'm sorry about that glitch.

I used 2-1/2 to 3 inch deck screws.

I actually got 35 beautiful houses that a neighbor was throwing away so my daughters in laws are interested in having one too
I am so sorry that I'm just seeing your reply. TH-cam doesn't do that great of a job notifying me when someone comments on my videos. To answer your questions....I do want to build another that is easier to take apart and store. I had thought of making the disc's out of thinner plywood and making them to hinge where they could be folded in half for storage. I also do some welding and thought of fabricating a metal stand. That would be as strong but very light. As far as houses, I'm not really sure. I guess it would depend on the size of the houses. The ones we uses are fairly large...and we can put around 25 or so and have room for more. Again, so sorry for the late reply. Hope this answered your questions.

The plywood disc's are 5/8" plywood, the base is 2x6 pine, and the smaller pieces that hold the disc's are 2x2"

When showing how to do the 36" circle once you have the squre why don't go from corner to corner to find the centre
You can, if you have a 36" square, but this is the way I chose to find the center.
