The Magnificent Terry Chambers on the drums is definitely the lead on this Song and I love it. The way he scats over the snare with such quick Snaps like the way music is played in Jamaica. The only other drummer that plays like this is Stuart Copeland from the Policeand they also had huge Success. English Settlement is an Astounding LP and I'm glad I discovered it in the 70,s along with other great imported records.XTC Forever in my playing list!
Fantastic musicianship... XTC was my favourite band of the 80’s... and “English Roundabout” was my favourite song... but you just can’t wrong with XTC :)
People rushing round with no time to spare I’m so dizzy 😵 I’m neither here nor there In this traffic jam, I just want to shout Let me off o’ this English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English rounda And all the the horns go ‘beep! beep!’ All the people follow like sheep 🐑 And all the lights and sound Making my head go round, round Everyone is cursing under their breath I’m a passenger, I feel close to death ☠️ Hopeless situation, I have no doubt Stop the madness English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English rounda And all the cars go ‘brum! brum!’ And in my ears I feel a hum The neons blind my eyes 👀 All those tempers rise, rise, rise, rise Cars & buses go puffing out their smoke 💨 Roll my window down, I begin to choke I have had enough, I just want to get out Let me off o’ this English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English roundabout (oh oh oh) English rounda Round-round, round-round, round-round, round-round Round-round, round-round, round-round, round-round Round-round, round-round, round-round, round-round Round-round, round-round, round-round, round-round
Apparently, English Roundabout is in 5/4 time in honour of the Magic Roundabout in Swindon......Or am I the last person in the known universe to have got this?
You're not alone... there are five exits off The Magic Roundabout. I went to a nearby school (since relocated) from 1973-1975, shortly after the original roundabout was removed and replaced with this "Ring Junction"; 5 mini-roundabouts located around a central ring. (I'll get my anorak...!)
stayed at the jurys inn Swindon around 8 months ago and the football ground and magic roundabout weren't too far away so had to see this roundabout from xtc"s English roundabout track and wasn't disappointed but didn't realise the magic roundabout was actually built way back in 1972
My guess would be because XTC was never very big in the US and the US is the largest viewership base of TH-cam. That said, this is in my Top 5 XTC songs of all time!
The percent of Western songs written in five is very small, but the number of songs in five is vast. Tons of prog, fusion, art metal and jazz songs showcase five, though they usually flip to 4/4 for the chorus (or vice versa).
There are a few, but they're pretty rare - Living in the Past (Jethro Tull - their song North Sea Oil is also in 5), Do What You Like (Blind Faith), Water (PJ Harvey), Rant and Rave (Joe Jackson), A Fairytale of Slavery (Miranda SexGarden), Indiscipline (King Crimson), Lat Exit (Pearl Jam), 15 Steps (Radiohead), New World (Soul Asylum), Rainbo Conversation (Stereolab)... And yes, I love 5/4!
I worked in Swindon in the 1980's and there was a roundabout called the "MAGIC ROUNDABOUT", But having lived in Asia for 15 years now i can assure you a "roundabout" is much safer and more traffic friendly that a "FUCKING U TURN" Gesus what id that all about, drive 5 miles to turn around.. so yes they are a pain,, but they work,
Its totally insane how tight they where. One of the tightest grooves ever recorded

this song was inspired by the Beat....
My favourite song on the album, played it to death when I was growing up. : )
Me as Well.... But from the 1980's. I was already "grown Up" . So glad I decided to do that ! ... but only a wee bit... :-)

I love your vid too, fogzax......simple and lovely...great perspective
Trippy rhythm , great band !
Great band.
You should also appreciate their "60s psychedelic" stuff released as "The Dukes of Stratosphear"
The best turntable portrayal I've seen on you tube, kudos! Love the song choice too.

With your cartridge this would be great on open reel.
NME PANNED THIS ALBUM,, SHOWS WHAT THEY FUCKING KNOW.
5/4 time very unusual in pop music. the only other one I can think of is sting's seven days. can anyone think of any others?

Golden Brown by The Stranglers is partly "in five."

YeAH…I’ve always thought they had it in mind when they wrote this. Ha! The magic roundabout is still there.
