  • Using 5 strands of 1/2" width, start by stacking them on top of each other. Weave preferred length to go around your head (ie medium = 22 1/2"), and add three to four inches to overlap and sew the ends together (26" or more).
    Your Head size or circumference's
    Small = 21"
    Medium = 22 1/2"
    Large = 23"
    XLarge = 24"
    XXLarge = 24 1/2"

    Thank you. I'm going to be given a name by a Snohomish and Makah elder that I have known for many years. His head is 26 inches. Should I allow for the cedar shrinking some and do it at 28 or 29 inches? It's been probably at least 15 years since I've woven with cedar and am a beginning basket maker. How do I know if the cedar I have been given is still good to use? I wish I could put your video on 'extra slow' motion as I am a 'slow learner!'

      The bark won't shrink enough or at all, so no worries there. Wrap an 1/8" strip around your four fingers. Try and separate your fingers. If the bark breaks, too weak, else it's strong enough to weave with.

    I have several hats and baskets. How is the best way to take care of them? should I use any type of oil on them?

      Western red cedar bark, just spritz with water occasionally after dusting. Oil can damage and discolor them. But, Yellow cedar, if it gets wet, will shrink and deform, both best kept in a dust free place.

      Harvest when you can. There are people that will harvest for you and sell you bark, but no store does.
