      Lidl pays their workers fairly well in the UK. They save money by keeping their ranges small, not fully decanting product onto the shelf (keeping it in boxes instead), and having smaller store sizes in general, reducing rent and energy costs. People are encouraged to stay loyal to the store by the constant promotions and changing ranges of interesting junk in the middle aisles.

      hedgehog3180 go back to history, and ideologies aside, you can see that thats not possible and is far worse than what we have. Wake up, you live in a utopia. The problem is not capitalism is people. Great businesses are all over like Tesla or Iberdrola. Smaller businesses also are great around where I live. There will always be corrupt people and nasty, it’s life. You guys like to complain a lot and Im sure you dont offer any solution and blame everything on the system. If we get the whole picture, we see that poverty rates are down by a lot since the whole world started to exchange goods, and countries like China have now much less poverty thanks to the free market. We can improve things, sure. But dont be that stupid, because by far, countries that run on capitalism are the most advanced, and the ones communist and depending the most on governments (Africa, Rusia, South America in general) are less advanced with less poverty. Wake up, and do not tell me nordic countries are dependent on government please...

    I totally agree with you but Walmart’s incentives keep them from turning into a much more sustainable business. And we, as consumers and investors, have a huge say in this with our consumer dollars and investor dollars. We are the ones who incentivize this type of behavior from these companies because we are the ones selecting the “two hour delivery” option instead of the standard option. Instead of going to Walmart we could select some other retailer that we identify with more. For example Costco

    • @hedgehog3180
      @hedgehog3180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That's a delusion, there doesn't exist a grocery story which is actually zero carbon so you don't have a real choice. Buying at Costco is not going to solve anything it's just feeding into the same machine that causes these problems. We do have power but the idea that our dollars are like a democratic vote is one that is itself fundamentally at odds with democracy itself. If our consumer dollars are a vote then it's not a free democracy since not only do people have different amounts of wealth many don't even have the choice to spend their money outside of these companies. If I can't buy food anywhere else than Walmart then my options literally are, give them money or starve, if in a democracy your options were "vote for this party or die" then we'd rightfully call that a dictatorship. Our power is not in our wallet and the idea that it is, is an idea that is fundamentally subservient to the ruling class, since we're literally giving them our money. Our power is in organizing, it is in protest, strikes and riots. These few weeks of protests and riots in the US have spurred more change and gotten companies to do more than the previous 20 years of peaceful activism. When you buy from another store you don't make any change but when you burn down a police station the ruling class knows that shit is getting serious and they fucking listen. There are more than us of them, they'll never be able to hire enough cops and soldiers to stop the people so it's a simple conclusion really, use your actual power to threaten those in charge, either they fucking step up and do something or it's the guillotine.

    The thing is a non live-able wage will always ruin any kind of environmental progress in the US. Walmart is accessible to so many people because to many in this country make so little money. While I wish others can choose much better options, they simply can not afford it. Walmart can only be reformed when they start losing money. Don’t get me wrong I like this video and I agree Walmart needs to do 10x more to be environmentally friendly, we need a $15 minimum wage nationally.

    4:44 the company net sales worldwide from fiscal year 2006 to 2018 grew from 308 to 495 billions which means 495/308=1.6=60% growth, but their emissions only grew from 4.81 to 6.1 between 2005 and 2018 so 6.1/4.81=1.26=26% growth. I think you forgot to account for the growth of the company and it's size. I'd say they did reduce their emissions. Worker and community-owned enterprises are good recipes for better working conditions and lower local pollution, but no guarantee for general sustainability. We consumers can do a lot, perhaps even more, by sending our custom away from the likes of Wallmart.
    BTW, the only one-hour delivery service for groceries I used during the lockdown was by a company mostly doing take-out deliveries, using bicycle couriers (mostly students). They would simply collect my order at a grocery nearby. It is a bit more expensive, and I usually tipped the delivery guy additionally, but it was very convenient, I did not cause those delivery trucks to idle in front of my house, and I even supported those students a tiny bit.

    Walmart should absolutely be held up to scrutiny, but the claims made in this video may be misleading. It may very well be true that Walmart's emissions grew, but what if those emissions were the result of Walmart absorbing business that would otherwise have gone to less efficient operations? The truth might be that Walmart actually resulted in a net decrease of emissions in the sector, while taking on a larger share of sectorside emissions on their own accounts. The same goes for 2-hour delivery. A half-filled delivery van making 20 deliveries is still more efficient than 20 mostly-empty private cars making individual round-trips delivering the same goods.

    but seriously, do they not realize that this transition takes time and work? they won't just be emission-free like that by the time 2030, or whatever year, comes around.
    I'd also really like to see a company being covered that does it right! It's important to shed light onto these shady companies but it gets really depressing sometimes.

    The problem with walmart is that it is being significantly subsidized by the government via food stamps and similar welfare programs, given that it only makes 3 pennies on each dollar in profits ($500 billion revenue - $485 billion spending), The $15 billion in profits for a company this size make it difficult to spend on alternative energy upgrades. Also if walmart is to become independent from government, it will not survive given that it has to spend $200 billion more to pay for all the food stamp users. However, in Toledo Ohio, the walmart appears to have a solar rooftop on it which is a step in the right direction, but I think this 2-hour shipping option is an attempt to compete with Amazon.

Greenhouse gas emissions attributed to Walmart will increase sure, but at the macro-level if you include the consumer, wouldn't it be a net benefit?

      @@glen___1737 a standard truck carries 36,000kgs of cargo. Do you really think a battery pack in a cab is big enough to get a decent mileage? Electric trucks might be good locally depending on the load, but any further they'll be trash.

    You can't reduce your carbon by growing.......This is why governments find it hard to curb emissions..... turth is that's is not Walmart's fault or it's 2.2 million employees, it's the 1.6 billion consumers that shop there.. unfortunately it's the only game in town were I live, if the local Walmart closed, its an hour and a half drive to the next town with a grocery store....that means 1,100 residents aren't putting emissions into the atmosphere to go to the store.....

    You are extremly talent in your research, and the audiovisual Art, your videos are of high quality, but the thing i am worried is that my country have gone totally to the left, the extreme socialism, and that is even worst than totally free capitalism, i like a lot your videos but i am concerned of the posibility that USA de first country of the world fall into a socialist trap too, analize the Argentinean case and its NarcoSocialism is really bad, but i feel good with the posibility of making corporations more human, more sustantiable.

    Generally I like the content on this channel but this video seems somewhat unfair. I'm not a fan of Walmart for many reasons and perhpas their efforts are just greenwashing. I think it would be more fair to look at their emissions on scome scaled basis (per store, or per $ of revenue or something else or several metrics) and compare them to competitors over the same time frame. Consumption inherently have some negative effect on the environment right now. And also to throw in that 'worker and community owned operations' is required to get companies to be responsible is a bit of a reach and sounds like you pushing your own opinion. It would be pretty easy to get companies to be better environmental and social stewards in a captialist systems ... make them pay if they dont, make their bottom line wither away to nothing if they dont; something like.... a carbon tax. The problem is that if there isn't a global comittment to these type of initiatives that companies just swap over to a country with less strict rules. We'll get there eventually but to proclaim that worker and community owned companies are a requirement while offering no information or examples to back up such a claim is irresponsible.

    • @louie.lenard5795
      @louie.lenard5795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig Hudy your statement that this video is unfair doesn’t really make sense. It would if the video was called „how sustainable is Walmart compared to XYZ“ but this video is about this particular chain and the claims they have made about their sustainability goals. Also if it was „pretty easy“ to get companies to do stuff in a capitalist system tanntest would already be happening. Profit is always most important not just for the companies but also the ones lobbying or otherwise making profit off their growth. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, it’s an inherently unsustainable idea.

    • @aidanwansbrough7495
      @aidanwansbrough7495 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a good video, but yes, the use of only certain statistics I found a little disappointing - we never found out (I don't think) how their non-direct emissions have changed in the last 15 years, only now their direct emissions have increased slightly (and at a lower rate than growth I believe).
      Absolutely I believe companies should be doing more, but I think it's important to be as honest as possible in reporting on these issues, to show that the cause is legitimate.

      One way to accomplish that while harnessing the power of capitalism instead of abolishing it would be to internalize costs, like a Carbon Dividends plan. I support Americans 4 Carbon Dividends because it will make a bigger difference than socialist legislation ever could.

      Well I used to work at walmart but gosh for bid, if I don't put something in a bag for a customer. The customer would end up taking it and throwing it in the bag because they want the bag to "confirm" that they purchased an item so they don't get looked at as stealing something or the comfort of having something to carry it with because they are lazy or it's just easier.

    • @Jarkendarr
      @Jarkendarr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sir We Are About to Die Whatever the reason, the truth is most cashiers will put everything in bags without asking and most costumers will take them, of course you and me can go and ask for no bag or bring our own, but the majority won't. Walmart has the power to implement no bags/reusable bags they just don't want to do it.

    Wal-Fart cheap??? Have you been in one to purchase ANYTHING??? Car batteries are 20% MORE than O'Reilley's. Tires are 30% more than "Mom-and-Pop" tire shops. Because of Wally-World "special sizing" name-brand grocery products are higher on a per/unit basis than the expensive grocery stores in town. Since the "bean-counters" took over running Wally-World since Sam died, I can go to ANY OTHER store and equal or beat their prices...So your premise is WRONG and everything you say after that is meaningless.

      they put cost of what you stole on other customers, so you basically steal from your neighbors. And you will not stop stealing even if Walmart start act right. Per example: from 2006 to 2018 they had 60% growth in sales and their emissions grew only 25%, so they already started acting right, but you don`t care.

    Probably the number one seller of one time use products, many of which need to increase in price to be phased out. Walmart needs to invest more in quality product development that replaces these and other goods that are destructive in our hyper-consumeristic culture. Under the capitalism-heavy system we reside in, environmental damages mirror our expectations and our spending habits represent societal collective willpower. More human-centric systems exist, but living in our reality means development and high enough expectations (user strikes in capable communities) can realistically advance corporate America. Needed a dreamer got Biden *hopefully
