You don’t need to restart your phone to get the AirPods to work. Pull down the control center, tap on the media icon at the top right, and then you can choose your output device.

@@isaaclarson did that, didn't help. That's why I ended up just getting NG rid of the device. Absolutely not satisfied with this release at all.
