I used to see Jim Gordon several times a week where I used to work, which was the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, CA. Gordon was incarcerated there and hospitalized on the inpatient medical unit. I would scan documents into the electronic medical records for the patients on the unit, and occasionally Gordon would stop off at the nurses' station to ask a question. He looked nothing like the tall, strapping young man of his drumming years. I heard from one of the nurses that he had asked for a book from the prison library about rock stars. One can only imagine what he might have wanted with that. He played on lots of popular records, so he may have been trying to remember or maybe he wanted to show his fellow inmates who he had played drums with. I made damn sure though that everyone in that area knew who he had been at one time.
It sad when your at the top of your game everyone is or wants to be your friend but when you truly need a friend no 1 is there. Never take people for granted you never know when you might need a real true friend. Gordon was a great drummer thou.

45 years after first hearing it, I still consider this Jim Gordon solo as one of the greatest live rock drum solos of all time.Unlike other drummers, he stuck to the groove all throughout his solo' he shook that groove like a dog will shake a rat, and pushed it to insane levels - and that outro/intro fill going back to the band! Jesus! And Eric's soloing as well! Crazy beautiful! I will never tire of listening to this song.
After years and years of wondering why the drummer who so inspired me suddenly disappeared, I learned the horrible fate of Jim. The day after I learned, I performed this song, sang AND did the drum solo. Thankfully it was not recorded as I would have sucked next to this legend. And also, while I was doing the solo, I was crying.
I don’t know about the best rock drummer and that kind of ultimate praise, but I will say this is one hell of a great cut. I can only say where was I back then? Why didn’t I get my act together to get a venue to see these guys? My first response is to say “too stoned to get it together and no money” but I think I had no idea based on Clapton’s first solo album that doing these songs live would be so incredibly good. I was still lamenting the demise of Cream. Blind Faith: good but not Cream was my thinking. What did I know? Layla had not yet been released and so without seeing this group I had no idea. Plus Let It Rain was not originally a Dominoes' track anyway, it came from Eric's previous debut solo album, and this live version is missing the piano part which was a prominent part of the studio original, played either by Leon Russell or John Simon.
Jim Gordon was a monster drummer. Listen to this Let It Rain solo, then compare to any Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell or John Bonhom solo you think is best. Hear the difference? If you can't then listen to any Mike Shrieve solo. Can you hear the difference now? I sure can. Singing drummers? Levon Helm, Buddy Miles. No Duane on this album, but yr right, he was special...
1st for me, holy...!!! Classic jam, let it rain on me.
Entschuldigt bitte, bin selber kein Musiker. Nevertheless Derek and the Dominos best live record ever in my opinion!
WE LOVE YOU JIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd give anything to see the video of this, probably doesn't exist, but still....
One of the great bands
Why do you say Allman should not have played on the album?
Why the need to diss Allman? Nobody twisted Allman;s arm to get him to play on 'Layla'. Derek & The Dominos - Live is a great LP. So is 'Layla'.
Plus Let It Rain was not originally a Dominoes' track anyway, it came from Eric's previous debut solo album, and this live version is missing the piano part which was a prominent part of the studio original, played either by Leon Russell or John Simon.
Live version sounds more like Clapton than the studio version that sounds like George Harrison recorded it. I love how they influenced each other...
Stephan Stills played the 1st solo on the studio track😮
Jim Gordon was a monster drummer. Listen to this Let It Rain solo, then compare to any Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell or John Bonhom solo you think is best. Hear the difference? If you can't then listen to any Mike Shrieve solo. Can you hear the difference now? I sure can. Singing drummers? Levon Helm, Buddy Miles. No wonder the guitar players like Clapton came to the states.
If so, one should not forget Don Brewer's drum solo from GFR
I don't understand your description for the clip. Why shouldn't Duane have played on Layla??
Lol I don't get it.
All good here. 🎶 💗 😎
First part is not Derek and the Domi oes ------- seco d is a song xalled Evil without lyrics foloewd bt Let it Rain?..... Evil was recorded in April and May in england 😢.
Half our pass midnight with rain..
what a shame this band didnt carry on
Got Eric Clapton's Autobiography book from a radio station back in 2008. (I believe - something like that). Eric is the best electric guitarist. He's beyond a very nice guy. But this is a very tough read. If you are a former drug addict - This is a very tough read !!!
they need to be in the hall of fame
there is no more room after they inducted the Go-Gos
For one album?
The groove line...Drums
A u t o pirate
Let it rain
"another reason that Duane Allman should not have played on the Layla album"
Really?
that guy's stoned, forget him
@@dmcginnis28 mission accomplished
What? No Duane on Layla..seriously they were the best together.., then we probably wouldnt have key to the highway as well , im so glad they got together. Soon after Duane was gone.

Just listened to Chicago live from Carnegie Hall version of "Ballet for a girl in Buchannon" and couldn't help but think of this Jim Gordon drum playing and solo, it sure sounds like it influenced Danny Seraphine a lot...

Where was this recorded at
Fillmore East NY, October 23rd or 24th 1970. Hope this helps Kendall.
Song starts at at 0:15.
Bobby Whitlock is STILL the shit now. Austin TX now still cranking it out.
That a helluva drum solo wow. In fact the drummer is the only one holding this thing together.

That was "KICKASS"
Noah U BEE Right when Left
i need way more cowbell 😁
I thought the record was stuck.
really a staggering little concoction of talent, imagine if Clapton wasn't into heroin , and decided that this group should stay together
He was never the same after the heroin.
The entire band was addicted to Heroin, from the book bags of heroin were all over the studio and the sound room.
K is al ways your friend
Clapton thought Duane Allman was a great asset on the Layla album.
