i cannot listen to “when david heard” without starting to sob. the way you have captured grief in a musical form is...indescribable.

"When David Heard..." was one of the very first pieces I heard by Whitacre. He really does capture the heart rending grief of a father's loss of a son (even a deeply rebellious one in Absalom). This piece influenced how I understand God's grief over the death of His rebellious children. Thanks for writing incredible music, Maestro Whitacre.

And the death of the Son of David (Here in this story as well as an allegory of Christ) and how the son literally hangs from a tree and the Father wishes he could have died in his place

When David Heard is by far the most heart-wrenching piece I've ever heard

Reading 2 Samuel 18 today with Father Mike Schmitz' "Bible in a Year". He references this piece. So I looked it up...as gut-wrenching as anything (musically) that I have ever heard in my life. Thank you.

Every time I hear "When David Heard", I feel King David's grief so deeply that I am moved to tears.

"When David Heard" was actually the first piece of yours that I had the privilege of performing in a live choir. My dad was across the choir in the bass section, and, after numerous rehearsals and a performance, I've never been able to hold it together right at measure 145. Absolutely incredible!

More than a masterpiece. That moment of trying not to believe it, (it can’t be, it can’t be) and then forced over the event horizon, bursting, flooding…into the painful truth. How is it possible that someone found a way to paint that with tones?.. I can’t believe this piece exists. So far above anything I’ve ever heard. I have not experienced true grief, but something like this makes me feel like I know exactly what to expect.

Hi Eric, The power of the emotion in 'When David Heard' is staggering. I have played the piece to my 17 year old sons (their usual listening pleasure is not classical music!) and they were visibly moved. It is an exceptionally painful yet beautiful piece of music. I've often wondered how Ron S managed to conduct the debut performance without breaking down. I'm absolutely positive I couldn't have done that, and by looking at your reaction in this video, years later, I'm not sure that you could either. Thank you for having the youthful temerity to write such an amazing piece and for sharing this video with us.

When David heard is one of my favorites I’m learning it all by self with little knowledge of music

I listened because Bro Halverson of UNSHAKEN , suggested it when he taught The Old Testament story of King David loosing his son, and the grief he felt as a father at this loss.
Compelling to say the least. Thank you

Agree with others. Still my absolute favorite piece of Whitacre's. Such an emotional journey to sing it.

As you speak about this, we see on your face, and hear in your words, the memory of that time and the process that you put yourself through to create the piece.
So many years later, even speaking of it like this, shows us a window, even just a momentary glimpse, into not just the situation at the time of composing this, but how that trial has affected ... who you are now.
Its almost 15 years later, and you still cant speak of it without being drawn into it. It seems to us watching this, that it seems no easier for you now, than it was the day of the premier.
All we can offer you in response to this share ... and as a promise for future shares, is a pillow for you to land on, and unconditional love to soften the whack of the loneliness of experience. We are alone, but we do it together. You are alone, but you have us. I am sure I can speak to the whole VC crowd and beyond, that our pillow is planet wide and contoured for you. You will always be caught and placed feet down.
I have changed my mind since our conversation back in the day, one day I will conduct David with a choir capable of performing it. I know I can ... I understand the piece properly now. Maybe ... just maybe ... do it virtually.
Thanks dude, see ya next VC, I'll be there to help.
