  • Well, the deck is complete and the floor is mostly complete! Finding enough time to spend out here on this has been a struggle, but this is where I am at now. Anyone else drowning at this time of year? 🤪
    I hope to have an addendum to this video up in a few days; a sit and chat style, where I can properly explain my next moves on this build, and explain a few other things as well.
    I hope everyone is having a great summer!
    (Our internet is SO slow it takes literally ALLLL day to upload a video 🤨)
    *I'm sorry for not adding subtitles - I have just tried and it doesn't seem to be working. I will keep trying to learn how to do this for future videos!

    Fire harden your spear point. ... When you layed down full sheets of plywood (underlayment?) for the floor, it's much stronger to stagger the sheets, so there's not a continuous seam all the way across the floor. Particularly with naturally warped joists, you can count on difficulty with that continuous 12' seam in the future. ... Building code in my area requires special short, thick nails to be used with joist hangers. ... Videos of your creativity, ambition, overcoming adversity, gumption, drive, tenderness and love to the life around you are an inspiration. ... Godspeed. Stay safe.

    I think I watched that same movie, The Edge with Anthony Hopkins and Alex Baldwin when he makes the bear fall onto the spear. `` What do you think Booboo, great idea Yogi. I was more concerned that you only used one lag bolt where the beam was bolted to the posts. Smart girl, a rachet stap. I use them as well. I used them to keep my kayak on the roof of my car. Over time with them getting wet from the rain, the grain in the decking will confirm to the way you racheted them into place.

    The screws don’t have nearly the sheer strength of nails so they can snap with shifting and whatnot, that’s prob the concern. The deck on my house was built with screws and it’s still standing so you’re probably fine. Really enjoying your content from a “neighbour” over in Vernon!

    • @robertpugsley6326
      @robertpugsley6326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see if the other cabin was built with screws is on a less of a hill...cliff; then I would see where it probably would be fine.
      But this ain't a small hill, the deck drops right off. Where it take just a few screws to snap, the whole structure could crumble. Weight of the walls, roof, overhang roof, the interior
      comforts are going to place alot of shear downward weight on those "all-purpose screws".
      Do this as an example, put a screw in a vise and bend it over...it doesn't bend it snaps. Now use a nail, the nail bends.
      Structurally unsound if you (her) continues to build on a cliff with all-purpose screws. Good luck!!

    • @cdeboer11
      @cdeboer11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robertpugsley6326 I know exactly where you're coming from but I doubt that it will catastrophically fail all at once. There's likely only going to be a few people there at one time, not a wedding on the deck. The walls and roof will be carried to the main rim boards which are secured to the foundation posts with better hardware. Screws snap you're right but they aren't going to break all at once.

      @@cdeboer11 common sense prevails. Each end of joist has nails in it, only the short blocks have screws simply because I didn’t have enough nails, or the energy to nail that much. It’s nearly impossible for everything to fail at once, in my common sense opinion.

    I'm not trying to be an arm chair critic and I can only describe my own experiences. My neighbor put similar gaps to yours in his deck boards and over time the boards shrank to the point that lawn chair legs would fall thru the gaps. When I built my deck I used a nail as a spacer and 20 years later I have wider gaps than I would like. Wood shrinks over time. But it's still a very usable deck. I don't know the answer to this. So, if it makes them a bit more warm on the off chance I stay out there on a cold night, then it was worth it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Some bear advice. When you are out in the woods always wear bells and carry pepper spray. It is also important to be able to distinguish between brown bears and grizzly bears. You do it by looking at their poop. Brown bears poop is smaller and you will occasionally see squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop contains bells and smells like pepper spray.

      I'm not criticizing, that's not my point. My point is for her safety. Yes I agree she's doing a fantastic job, Her safety is my only concern. Good day.

    The deck with a beautiful view is looking very nice, but it takes a lot of hard work to make your dream come true! Love the channel, be safe, stay healthy, & God Bless everyone. Hope your golden retriever is felling better, & eating again.

    Glad you were going to introduce your self before fighting the bear most people forget to do that. It means a lot to the bear and makes the subsequent fight to the death less awkward.

    I think what sets you apart, like a few others…is you don’t limit yourself to “limitations”. It’s beautiful. I will keep Steve in my prayers, he must be a wonderful man. The blocks you installed perpendicular to the joists have different names depending on where your from. Bridging, bridge blocking…some people call them purlins. Either way, good call on installing them! TY dear. Your vids are super refreshing to this middle aged soul!

    Good on Ya for the rachet strap idea... right on. I resisted saying " whatcha oughta do when that happens..." because I know that is rude. I have been a carpenter for over fourty years and I have a few good ideas about how to work alone... You are doing a fine job. I am smiling and enjoying your process. Good job. George.

      I’m not sure to be honest! Riley (the black dog) is the best bear detector - he has a specific bark for bears. The last weekend I was there, there was definitely a bear around by how he was barking. And there is definitely evidence of bears, but I actually don’t know! Could have been a deer.

    Plott hounds who are the state dog of North Carolina are bear hounds, friendly (to people), and loyal. They'll keep a bear (at least black) at bay. They were brought over from Germany in the 1750s by the Plotts who settled in the Asheville, NC area.

    I’ve never thought of introducing myself to bear before. Usually I just scream obscenities at them. They likely have warned other bears about the @$$hole with the potty mouth in the valley. Smart use of the ratchet strap. I like your approach and enthusiasm. It really is a lovely view from that location.
