  • The first installment of my James Bond collection on Laserdisc. This video goes through the first ten films in the official EON series and their LD editions going film by film with extremely detailed notes based on my years of research into transfers, picture quality and sound quality.

    Man is that "Thunderball" box set beautiful. It's not my favorite Bond, but I'd love to find that in wild at some point. "Live and Let Die" was pretty much my intro as well, on TV in the 70's. It was a real event when a Bond film was shown on TV at that time; I remember watching "Goldfinger" and this one on TV in the mid-to-late 70's and we had friends over and made popcorn and snacks. "The Spy Who Loved Me"...the stereo mix does sound like true stereo; whether it was a six-track mix, a Dolby matrix optical, or 4-track mag stripe is apparently unknown...interesting.

      The Goldfinger and Thunderball boxes are the most deluxe Bond packages in video history for sure. All of them of course obliterate my childhood VHS tapes.
      Spy was apparently 4 track stereo on the premiere engagements only then mono for general release. The LD was the first time the stereo showed up and then it was remixed into 5.1 for all future releases or later remixes.

    I just picked up the Thunderball box set at a very nice price - looking forward to checking it out - hope the stereo remix is not too distracting - I really disliked the remix on the UK Blu Ray which unfortunately didn't include the original mono mix - that was a case of wildly fluctuating volume levels between dialogue music and FX at least when playing through a stereo amp.

    I actually think the transfer for Dr No criterion CAV is rather good. If soft looking.

      It’s the best there is for accuracy short of the MGM pressing being a tad sharper.

    Hi there, great video. My 1989 letterboxed thunderball has the same glitch where bond says Dom perignon twice

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it. It’s one of the LDs that was a gateway for me to get into the format. Great color and still the best audio of any release.

      Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader the CBS/Fox widescreen offering of LTK is little better than VHS video-wise, you’re right in your other video on it, I had to make the decision to buy the later release

      Alfred Valrie yes the MGMUA disc is so much better and avoids the chance of laser rot like the fox copy had.

    I somehow got Dr. No CAV Criterion for only 14 bucks. When I found it at a store in Cubao, I was like, "a little pricy but eh, I'm not gonna be able to find one later so why not get one now?" Out of sheer boredom, I checked listings on Ebay and I saw this going for 50 dollars, even the CLV version for some reason was expensive.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a score. The Criterion always has a higher price for the name but the CAV is the one to track down because of the commentary and exclusive status. Except for their splicing in the soundtrack version of the theme on the end credits, the Criterion mono is the best sounding version of the film anywhere.

      @@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader How's the Blu-Ray mono? I don't have any James Bond Blu-rays except Casino Royale because I've seen screenshots of the "remastering" done to the old movies and they looked terrible.

    Did you ever add the THX copy of Dr No to your collection? If so, how did the transfer compare to the previous letterboxed edition?

    it seems like the guys that put together the insert with the chapters and etc. on the Connery Collection volume 1 set *really* preferred From Russia With Love over the other 2 movies in the set.

      Sometimes multifilm boxes focused more on one film’s images but you could be right.

      He was talking about the letterbox disc that came out with the LTK reissue. They were the final standalone widescreen LDs of the original widescreen LDs.

    You had asked about the thx version of from Russia with love stick with the MGM or criterion laserdiscs the. Thx laserdisc is awful bad print damage no color timing anything I think they just slapped the sticker on it and didn't fix anything a god. Awful transfer don't waist your money

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Koestner I picked up the thx disc later. It’s seems like the same transfer from the Connery collection I like but with a lot of color boosting added. I might prefer the older disc as being untouched. Additionally the thx pressing has subtitles for the few lines of foreign dialogue like my vhs tape did. I think this same master was reused for the SE DVDS and those have all kinds of color issues.
