    Drop four stakes in the ground. Tie one cord to each of them. Tie 2 each of those cords to either end of 2 sticks. One stick inside, shorter, than the other. Outside stick to be near the width of the mat. Lift one stick while the other is on the ground, drop in your bundle of reed, grass or what have you and continues to the end.

    The first knot is called a thumb knot, and complete its called a reef knot. Well that's what we call them in England anyway.
