wow rare to find anyone outside of the UK who is a fan! if you ever get a chance to come here in the future, go to Canvey and see what its like! cheers for watching.
Another great video and info. Totally agree about Canvey being so beautiful and unique. The friends of Concord Beach have done a wonderful job restoring and looking after the beach front.I read the Cafe was designed by the same architect who designed the iconic Sydney Opera House and it is a copy of the bridge of the original Queen Mary that is now in Longbeach California. I have a couple of friends who experienced the tragic floods . One was rescued with there family from the loft of there small house. The other remembers seeing boulders/debris the size of cars strewn inland. I also heard a report by a newspaper photographer who hired a plane so he could get some photographs of the damage. He recalled seeing a man holding a small baby and clinging to a chimney on the roof and being powerless as he watched them swept away by the water. (sorry waffling but I just love the history of these places).
Nice one. Being local and a teenager in the 1970's we knew all about Dr Feelgood, although I never managed to see them play (too busy watching Southend Utd!). I visited the Dutch house with my late father sometime in the 1960's. I also worked in Southend with one of the best looking girls I ever knew and she lived in Long Road on Canvey. Great nostalgic video, thanks!
Loved it! That was a very fair overview of the Island as a local - nice bit of the history in there alongside capturing the Oil City spirt. Indeed I think Canvey has some incredible views either over the marshes, beach, farmland or industrial parts. Maybe that's just when you're facing away from the Island itself haha. A very reflective and atmospheric place to grow up in. Would be up for showing you some of the lesser known historical bits including wartime stuff or doing a walk/wildcamp around the Island. The West Canvey Marsh RSPB reserve is great - feels like the Wild West out there but very peaceful. Well if my ugly mug isn't in there too, cheers for the link!
i'd be well up for a camp and a walk round the whole island mate, maybe nearer summer. i was worried what you would think of the video, being a native and an expert of all things canvey and dr. feelgood!
Talk about learn something new every day! I never knew both Dr.Feelgòod and Eddie And The Hotrods were from the Canvey Island! Another informative video Tom. As always good to see you and Candice out together. Take care, Steve. 👍👍
haha cheers mate, glad i was of service! lol. so much musical talent from such a small island. one could say that punk and especially pub rock came from the Southend music scene of the early to mid 70s. must of been an amazing atmosphere to be in.
hey man, thanks for the video. if i may suggest another place for the next time: Canvey Club, 162. High Street. basically this is the place (in its upper floor if i remember correctly) where the Feelgood did their first rehearsals, also nowadays a lovely little pub with maybe hundreds of nice old football scarfs & memorabilias on the walls - and when I was there last time (late february of 2020, just before the pandemic shit), they still had a little bit of awesome Doctor Feelgood things in one of the corners of the pub (some posters, little toys and stuff like that)
That could easily come from the lyrics of Going Back Home! Brilliant song. Hoping to walk an entire lap of the island soon. Cheers for watching mate. There's definitely something special about Canvey.
I don't know if this is common knowledge or not...but... It was Dutch engineers who were brought over in the 17th century to build Canveys original sea wall who lived in the "Dutch" houses. Many of them were paid in land on Canvey after they had finished. That's why many of the road names up towards the "Point" end of the island have weird-sounding Dutch names.
Great video. I’m only 5.30 in. I have so many great memories at canvey. How much the beautiful island has changed. Way too many building going on now. A big hello to all the police that are doing an awesome job with limited resources. The fish and chips are still tasty as ever. But the pie and mash is NOT like it used to be. The Monaco has so much history it’s unreal.
I’m back AGAIN. I also forgot to mention if you notice there are a lot of Dutch name roads on the island. Basically I’m not sure which century it was but the Dutch got brought over to the Island to help with the drainage. In time many stayed on the island. In Holland Canvey island is part of the Dutch history and is known by the Dutch. When I was a kid canvey island were the biggest football team on the island but if I’m not mistaken I believe concord rangers are bigger than canvey island now. Jeff King was the owner of canvey FC and wanted to build a bigger stadium but the council refused so he went on to sell canvey island FC and bought Chelmsford FC and took Canvey’s best players with him. If people were now to visit canvey island Concord beach has paintings on the wall of the floods which I think were in 1957 (not too sure the date) I’m going to see if I can find the Dutch link about canvey. Yet again thank you for the awesome video.
TOM OUTDOORS You’re welcome. Basically we had a caravan. Behind the camp site is Concord Rangers football club. Now where the caravans used to be is now a old people’s retirement homes. And I have to say, the homes are absolutely beautiful. Canvey will forever be in my heart. I had so many memories there.
A friend has had a static caravan there for 20+ years and she also loves the place. Another work pal lives there. The 6to8 times I have been there a can honestly say I see nothing but a dump, sorry but it has no apeal and I have tried. Thanks for the video. Have you done Mersea island? Thats lovely
haha i love how it polarises opinions! cracks me up, even the locals slag it off from time to time but thats like everyone everywhere. i like it's bleakness and end of the line vibe to it, like a final outpost of Essex lol. but i see what you mean completely. camped on mersea twice and walked round the whole island once and even briefly dated one of the natives lol.
TOM OUTDOORS You have to go back to Mersea for a video, as long as you didn't leave to much DNA over there 🤔 Canvey and bleakness? I just see blackness there, bleakness in a nice way is Dungeness, the end off Essex is Southend, I'm sure when I die someone will launch me off southend pier on an old pallet on fire as some Viking burial just as a laugh as it's my yuk place since the 80's. 🤣🤣 Canvey? It certainly holds a thought and a prayer for those victims of 1953. Mersea I remember since I was 16 in 1982, my boss had a bit of land on the beach (owned the beach down to low tide) had 2 old static vans there, we'd do lots of water sports, he had the old James Bond Wet bikes, and speedboat etc... he eventually built a big pad there early 1990s, near the beach huts. I often think of going to look for him such a great guy, he couldn't have kids, him and his wife would spoil me, though his wife came back from a holiday in N.Z. pregnant that sort of fucked things up for him
Oh no i clicked on the video and Tom dragged me around via a little video, what ever will i do.? Oh yeah imm watch the whole thing. ANy luck with getting OEX to sponser you ?
haha cheers for sticking it out lol. nah mate, no chance lol i couldn't use just their stuff, some of it's too bulky and heavy. i'm leaning towards more stuff by Alpkit and Rab atm.

😊Brilliant little film...
Big Dr. Feelgood fan from the USA and I stumbled upon your video. Thank you for posting. I totally enjoyed it!
wow rare to find anyone outside of the UK who is a fan! if you ever get a chance to come here in the future, go to Canvey and see what its like! cheers for watching.
Awesome! I still listen to Feelgood.
cheers, yeah the music still holds up.

thats it mate, forgot to do a voice over on the labworth. don't apologise, interesting to hear more first hand accounts of the history of the island.

@@TOM_OUTDOORS Sounds good - probably suited to summer best. Haha always the case but I think this is fair.

Where i grew up😊 years later am back on the rock, after moving away and working elsewhere for quite a while. Will always be home to me👍👍

RIP Wilko Johnson, sad day 😥

know of any good places you could get away with a sneaky wild camp on the island?!

@@SuperfandangooTom done few videos on mersea island! Amazing little cafe there on the sea front :)
You should of given me a bell. Could of popped in for a cuppa, or a cider at the yacht club 😀🍻👍
thought you lived in kent lol.
@@TOM_OUTDOORS Nope definitely Canvey. I sail to Kent, Medway and Swale.
have you ever thought about going out to knock john fort or the maunsell sea forts?
We go out there in the summer when the weather is good for a double tide day. It's a great sail out
i'm looking to hire that x pilot boat trip service thingy and go out there one day to film.
