Falconry: Kestrels vs Red tailed hawk

- In this falconry video I compare kestrels to red tailed hawks. Red tailed hawks are large powerful soaring hawks, and American kestrels are tiny falcons. This video compares the two species and their use in modern falconry. In the early days of American falconry laws, apprentice falconers were only allowed to fly kestrels or red tails. Now most states allow for more choices for a first bird. This falconry video explains why both red tails and kestrels can make great beginners birds, but also are fantastic birds to be flown by an experienced falconer. This video also describes the drawbacks to these species compared to each other.
In the video I reference a previous video I made that teaches how to properly hood train a kestrel. That video can be found here.

im glad you are doing better, you are a great teacher, falconry is lucky to have you as an ambassador
Thank you very much
Welcome back. Thanks for highlighting the feeding times, weight management and indoor housing for the AK!
Ben, I think you could probably skip the "be patient with me if i forget words yada yada" that you've been doing. Looks like you're doing better than you give yourself credit for. I'd say skip it, and if on some video you happen to stumble, add the preface in post production. I'm mostly thinking about the psychological benefit of believing in yourself, so to speak. Glad to see you chugging along again!
I found your vids tn when trying to learn more about falconry, and I love your passion and care for it! I'm very glad to hear that you're okay, and I look forward to watching all your vids again when I eventually become an apprentice.
Ben, I found your falconry videos from an interview of Erik Bard. I had to check out your videos, I always thought falconry was interesting, but I had no idea it was so involved!! The birds are stunning and fascinating.
I am shocked to hear that your heart stopped, how horrifying!! I am thrilled to see you are working your way back to your norm or better! God speed!!
@@kapirk2244 thank you so much!
Ben ❤️ so great to see you, doing what you do Thank you for your knowledge, experience and perspective. I work with both, as Educational Ambassadors, and each is spectacular!!! Best to you ✨️🙌 🥰
Interesting talk, good luck 👍
Glad you’re doing better Ben🙏🏿. Maybe consider taking up breathing exercises like Chi Kung to help improve your health
Glad to see you're ok. Hope that is a trend that continues! A lot of people benefit from your knowledge.
You're doing pretty well for the circumstances, my man!
I've had a few 'difficult times', and getting confidence that that bunch of muscle in your chest will make another "ba-bump", then another, then another couple of hundreds of thousands, going to sleep, hoping that the "ba-bump" gets you through to the morning.... takes time, and it's a kind of effort that people without your experience just don't feél.
Keep on keepin' on, Ben, I think that your connection with your "community" is probably a nice 'driver' to keep you on track.
(I hope i'm not speaking out of tuen..)
glad to hear you're ok. Take care sir!
Great to see you in shape again!
For Kestrels hunting, I've seen several videos of "car hawking" starlings with them, and they are like little Sidewinder missiles launched from the window!
Be careful with that. I know is illegal in a couple of states the U.S. and I would assume most states. One of those areas where the law was written for gun hunters but still applies to falconry.
@@cameronmccoy5051I believe places in Canada it's the same too ( though not 100% I never really dove deep into it )
My passage red tail last season hunted and ate a grasshopper during one of our first creance sessions. 😋
Hey Ben. I held my first Raptor this weekend. A KESTREL!!!!!! So awesome. What a great species. I will run one some day.
Mine was last winter an Harris hawk that will be a core memory hopefully this fall I can get a bird
@@2q2see2 I hope to get a bird this fall also.
Will the coming glut of circadias affect the wild raptors? Maybe the prey species will taste better with “stuffing.”
@@shereesmazik5030 I fed a Kestrel 3 cicada's last weekend. It was cool.
Looking good Ben, happy that you are recovering.
Can you please make a video of what to do when flying your falconry bird and a wild bird gets close to where you are flying?
Excellent video! I flew a male RT my first season, successful except for the hood training. I'm going to try for a female RT this coming season, and an AK in the next 2-3 seasons. I've leaned heavily on your book and videos and expect to do so for years to come.
Welcome back buddy! 🎉❤
Awesome video about two raptors, so different but both amazing! Glad to see you’re doing better, wish you the best ^^
Another Great video brother! 😊Praying for you 🙏🏼.
the vid I have been waiting for. I dident know if I want a kestral or a red tailed hawk
Welcome back and great video
A question that always occurs, regarding keeping your falcon/Kestrel in the house: they seem to 'void' just about any time, any where, or, can you train a bit to splat in one or more specific areas? I guess that, if you keep them with you, perched on the couch, or chair, that you can put some material there ... other ideas?
BTWm the opening screen appears to be a painting...one of yours?
Ask again: is that a painting in the thumbnail? Or a nicely "photoshopped" image... really pretty!
A semi-hypothetical question. What would be the best beginner bird out of the choice of kestrel, red tail hawk, or Harris hawk? (I guess you already answered the kestrel/red tail question in the video.) Is there a species different from those three that would be better as a beginner bird? Thanks, and speedy recovery!
Ben, What are your thoughts on radio telemetry vs gps?
How do you determine what size Hood you need for your red tail
What caused your heart to stop?
I say "Byou-te-oh" but I'm alone on that. Think it's the latin pronunciation tho.
