Since my husband's cancer diagnosis, I have been committed to knit hats for patients. Since texture is irritating for patients, I appreciate your recommended patterns. Peggy's Sleep cap is a free pattern that works well and is a quick knit. Fits the whole Fam hat by cozy up knits is my favorite gift hat. Great podcast. Thank you.
There are some fun hats in the Saltwater books that can be “upscaled” by using more luxurious yarns and playing with colour and gauge. Thx for your research on all the free options
Thank you so much for putting this fun video together of all these fabulous hats! My favorite hands-down is the Basset Hat. Nothling like a cute aviator hat, and those ear flaps to keep your ears warm. I love the shabby chic look of an aviator hat. 😊
I honestly haven't knit many hats, with the exception of the musselburgh hat. But I think a basic 2x2 rib hat is maybe a little underated. It's such a classic hat.
Im a crocheter dabbling in knitting and I love your perspective that a hat is a low risk investment in learning different techniques! I would like to try the Autumn vibes and Oressed flowers hats. Thank you for the detailed overview it's very helpful to me as a new knitter.
Great video! I now have a bunch of new ideas! To answer your question and be eligible for the sweepstakes, I really like the Espace Tricot hat patterns like "On The C Train" .
It’s probably not underrated but one of my husband’s favorites ever is the Hatch Hat (DK weight). For bulky weight the Gridiron Hat (way back machine). I love the Sockhead Beanie and the Lyle Cap for my indoor hats.
One of my favorite hat patterns is the Pennask Hat by Knox Mountain Knit Co. It’s a beautiful classic beanie with a mountain range above the brim, using simple knits and purls and 1x1 cabling. This was how I learned to cable without a cable needle! I’ve made one in dusky lavender yarn with some speckles and stellina as a gift for my mom and it’s the only hat she wears all winter. Skiing, sledding, out for a nice evening, it’s really perfect for everything!
Thanks for the inspiration! I want to knit up some hats for my family this winter. Gimme All the Cables Toque by Andrea Kemper was one of the last hats I knit for a charity event and it was super quick and really cute...and it's a free pattern!
I like the Musselburgh hat but also really like the sea glass hat by wool and pine as it is a great way to use up scrap yarns and you can be really creative with the colours.
Perfect video to watch while working on my Classic Ribbed Beanie by Purl Soho. I love knitting all the hats, but my favorites are the copy-cat CC Beanies. My two favorite patterns for this style are the CC Style Boulder Beanie by In Stitches, and the Copy Cat Copy Cat Hat by Heathermaid. I've made these for babies, children and adults and they're all so darn cute!
Great hat roundup. I love to see patterns I may have missed. My son-in-law loves the hats I make him so I’m always looking for a new pattern. I love Woolly Wormhead’s patterns. My favorite pattern of hers is Toph which is knit sideways garter with short row shaping to create the motifs. I have made several of them and love how they turn out.
One of my favorite free patterns is the Top-Down Ear Flap Hat by Purl Soho. Great range of sizes and suuuuper cute. I've made them for babies, very large hiker men, and willowy 20-something ballerinas, and all have been worn to death and loved. Lots of room to let the yarn shine with a classic, but unique pattern.
I am definitely going to start the mood hat very soon! I am so inspired by the color choices in the photo you shared. :) I think that is my new favorite underrated hat.
Although I haven’t knit this hat yet, an underrated hat pattern I really love the idea behind is the Basic Doodle Hat by Jamie Lomax. She gives a bunch of colorwork motifs that can be used interchangeably on any of her Doodle patterns.
I, too, love the Autumn Vibes hat for the very reasons it made your list. I like the no brim and rounded crown. The cable is elegant wirh the single cable design. Good choice to include.
Thanks for your video today - I really enjoy knitting hats and was excited by many of the hats you shared. The pressed flowers hat is calling my name - thanks for highlighting that hat.
I think that the Alaska Hat by Camille Descoteaux is a beautiful yet underrated hat pattern. It's really similar to her Alaska sweater, but more bite-size. Although I have yet to attempt anything beyond basic color work, this is a pattern that inspires me to want to try something more challenging.
Thanks for this! I immediately went to your bundle and added the Edie hat to my library! I’m a fan of purl soho watch cap! It’s an easy knit and fun to customize with Stripes! ❤
i haven't gotten around to making it yet (though i do need a new hat for this season...), but i LOVE the look of the March Hat by Meghan Babin. She has many, many beautiful hat patterns, but I just think seersucker stitch is so underrated!!
I love being able to take a simple hat pattern, like the Oslo hat and make it my own, adding stripes, changing up how thick the brim is, slouchy vs fitted. One simple basic hat patters can really give you so many options! I also think the Harlow hat is a great project to learn brioche!
I am a new knitter. I love your podcast because you explain everything so well. So far my favorite hat pattern is a ribbed hat I have done for my granddaughter in purple. Thank you for your podcast. Have a great day

Adding a couple of these patterns to my list! I love the Spur Hat by Hiromi Nagasawa, but my most knit hat patterns right now are the Oslo Hat and the Musselburgh patterns.
my favourite underrated hat pattern is the Fleesensee hat by Verena Cohrs. I like it with a short brim, a long brim, 1x1 ribbing, 2x2 ribbing... all the options! the twisted stitches are easy to memorize, the rows go quick, no purling after the brim, and the final product is always stunning!
Another inspiring podcast! Thanks for all the hat options, The crazy thing is,,, I've never knit a hat but have done mitts, scarves, head bands and sweaters, I know ,what?? So you've done hat pattern research for me ,, thank you!
Great hat round-up... and thanks for creating a Ravelry bundle to reference. I love the Chunky Cabled Tuque by Tricotoune. It's a super easy cable pattern, knits up super fast, looks more complex than it is and is easy to adjust for a lighter weight yarn than the builky weight it calls for.
I have to say the underrated hat I love the most is my own pattern, the frightfully drafty hat! I like the peekaboo color in the thick chunky ribbed brim!
I had seen this book being mentioned by other knitters, and was curious so thanks for your giveaway! Under-rated hat...for sure the bomber hat! Use to have one, lost it. But now I will make a new one. Good luck to all!
I really love the Rib and Gather hat by Potter and Bloom. I knit several for gifts last Christmas. It's a free pattern, uses Aran weight yarn, and is knit brim up. They fit everyone so well, which makes it so great for gift-giving!
Great video. I love knitting hats and am always looking for new patterns. It's been fun going through the comments and looking up patterns not familiar to me. The Huck hat by Nora Gaughan is stunning, fun to knit and underrated. I've knit two, one for myself and one for my husband.
I have loved trying the Manhattan hat pattern, I took advantage of a discount the designer offered for multiple patterns and got all 3 weights of the pattern … would absolutely love the book , I am manifesting this now !!!
This video came at just the right time for me as im trying to which hat to knit my brother for christmas. There was some great suggestions here. I don’t have a go to pattern as this will be my first knitted hat.
My favourite underrated hat pattern is from Yarnspirations. It's the Caron Travelling Lines Knit Hat. I made one for my Mom last Christmas and it fit so nicely that I have made 2 more for myself. It is quick, easy and stays snug on my head!
I'm definitely going to pick up The Basset Hat pattern. This one was my favorite because it's a uniquely elegant and polished version of a typically grungy/rugged style hat. My boyfriend keeps asking for something with ear flaps and I hadn't found one that I thought would be fun to knit, so thank you for finding this one!
The Foreign Accent Hat is super cute and is a new-to-me pattern so I'm super excited to knit it up! You've sold me to the Pressed Flowers one as well! 💖
I love the look of the majsan hat you shared! I just finished my first ever hat - the purl Soho Ribbed beanie. One day I hope to work up to colour work!
Ohoh! Now I just want to knit some hat for me and my family! Thanks you for this video and the contest. One hat that I love is the Gro hat, by Fibertale. So beautiful and it is totally me haha!
The basset hat has been added to my favorites in Ravelry! Thanks for letting me discover this one ! I would love to be the lucky winner of the book Knitting for Olive..!
Now have several more hats in my queue 😂. Loved them all. A hat I’ve gone back several times to knit, not sure it’s underrated thiugh, is the Rafa’s hat by Joji. Made it for multiple people in different sizes.
Beret No. 3 by My Favourite Things Knitwear has me intrigued as I have never purposely felted anything and it looks gorgeous on the model. I'm definitely going to try that hat pattern.
I have so many favorites! One that I’ve knit a lot is the Morning Walk hat, which is great because of the Woolfolk yarn combination. Thanks for the recommendations!
I love the antler toque by tin can knits (free pattern). It’s in 2 kid and 2 adult sizes. I love how there’s visual interest on all sides of the beanie. On the front and side you see the beautiful cables, which come together in the crown like the flower.
I really enjoy the Sirdar Haworth Tweed hat pattern. You use 2 colours of DK, alternating colours each round. It gives a really neat tweed look. The crown shaping is super nice, too!
This is a great episode! I am knitting a bunch of hats now and I'm going to try a few from your list. I found #18 Scrap Happy by J.G Miller. This underrated pattern will be good for using partial skeins of yarn to make fun stripes.
hey from the SE US! my favorite underrated hat pattern is the Spur hat by Hiromi Nagasawa of Plain Needle Works. It has a few hundred projects on ravelry so it's not like _nobody_ is making it, but I've never seen anyone talk about it on youtube or social media. I made it during the cold late winter here and i LOVE it. it's (almost) all over brioche with a huge folded over brim, so it's a _long_ make, but it's probably my favorite hat. The fit is fantastic, I love the graphic shaping, and it's SUPER warm despite being knit up in a fingering/sock weight yarn.
Jason’s cashmere hat by melissa Thomson and the Antler toque by tin can hats are definitely some of my favourite hat patterns! The cables keep things interesting and make a great gift knit :)
I love some of the beanies by Witre Design. I made a Gruner beanie earlier this month and really want to try the Youngs beanie soon! Also looking forward to knitting Rebecca's Stick Season hat soon! Especially excited that the proceeds are going to VT flood relief, as a Vermonter in a hard-hit town. Thanks for the pattern roundup!
This hat review was so timely, thanks Emily! I've always loved the Mood Beanie and will be knitting one up for my 11-year old son as soon as I finish up my current hip. :)
Thank you for another inspirational video! I'm not sure if the Best Beanie by James N Watts is underrated, but I have made many. It can be knit as a short 2 x 2 ribbed beanie with a folded brim above the ears or a taller hat with a brim that covers the ears. My giftees always tell me they receive complements when they wear this hat!
Thanks for all of these fabulous hat suggestions! One of my tried and true hat patterns is the Myra Hat by Knox Mountain Knit Co. A simple twisted stitch design mimicking the trestles of the Kettle Valley Railway in the Okanagan. It's a quick knit and seems to suit everyone. Love your podcast!
I recently made the Brownstone Beanie by Tori Yu for a friend. It's plain stockinette so it's a very easy, mindless knit, but it also has some interest because its worked at two different gauges! The brim is one strand of fingering weight and then the body is worked with that yarn held double.
Hi Emily ! I live in nearby Hamilton and really enjoy your podcasts. It’s always fun to see and listen to someone who knits, and talks about LYS that I can actually go to! I have knit the Bankhead Toque by Susie Gourlay many times! It’s free and a simple pattern but I love the wide width knits and single purls. Thanks for this giveaway!
The Mimi Pixiehat by Sophie Noix has to be the cutest little pointed gnome/pixie hat for kiddos. I knit three up for my nieces and nephew last Christmas, and even sized up to an adult size for my mother-in-law so they could all match. It has tiny cables along the edge and i-cord ties for under the chin ❤
Thank you for the round up. I have enjoyed knitting the Classic Ribbed Hat by Purl Soho but have also knitted the Bankhead by Susie Gourlay many times. Both are free patterns.
I'm interested in doing the mood hat without the faces but leaving the colorwork. One of my favorite underrated hat is the Basket Weave Family Hat by My Charming Wool. I think it's the best looking since the pattern continues all the way to top. Plus it comes in 4 different sizes and 2 length options.
There are so many cute hat patterns out there! I always love Lindsey Fowler for classic designs. For cables, I think Wool & Pine’s Deep Winter hat is beautiful. For colorwork, I love the Alaska hat by Camille Descoteaux.
Great hat pattern suggestions to check out this winter. I like the Bankhead hat pattern by Susie Gourlay. It has just a small amount of texture to it that it works really well with hand spun yarn too. Thank you for the opportunity to enter a give a way for the book from Knitting for Olive. It looks like a really beautiful addition to a knitters library!
My favourite is the Irma hat! It has these purl ridges which make it a really enjoyable knit, different than just a simple stockinette hat. (It is on the shorter side, so if you have a bigger head definitely do an extra pattern repeat).
I have knit many Mussleburgh hats, but my go-to is any colorwork hat using Shetland fingering weight. They are lightweight and deceptively warm. One of my recent favorites is the Houll hat from Ella Gordon.
Great video! I love mosaic knitting & definitely want to try the Pressed Flowers hat. My 2 favorite free patterns are the Maine Cables Hat by Heather Anderson & Two by Two by Anne G. Both hats can be found on Ravelry. I have knit so many for charity that I know the patterns by heart but am looking for different patterns to add to the mix.
I love doing colorwork and that Majsan Hat is so cute! I'm always looking for designs that are just a little different so I'm going to have to work on that sometime.
I love the Coffee Talk Toque, by Tracie Millar. Easy, great-looking in all kinds of yarn, great pattern-all the necessary things. Also: I really appreciate the pattern roundups you do. Lots of good info. Thanks!
Hi there, I’m working on a Purl Soho ribbed hat. I like the purl soho cabled hat you showed. Hmmmm, next one for my husband. Thank you for all your podcasts. Very inspiring…. ❤️
There’s a lot of love for the March Hat in Kelbourne Woolens’ 12 months of hats, but the other months are fantastic! I’m knitting up the October Hat for my partner and I’m eyeing up the February or July hat for myself.
My favorite is DEFINITELY father cables by Veronika Jobe! The only hat I’ve ever knit more than once, which says a lot as I usually don’t make duplicates of anything!
Great video! Although I haven't gotten around to making it yet, I love the October Hat by Sloane Rosenthal. It's a beautiful cabled hat that I am thinking making for some gift knits this coming holiday season.
I think the best underrated hat is the Khanya Hat because it is a lace hat but you dont get the wind blowing through, instead, you have another color. Also, it is not made with bulky yarn (which also lets wind blow through).
I love the easy peasy hat by Kroopa knits. It is next on my list after I finish up some gift knitting. Thanks for all this inspo- I have added more to my faves!
My favorite hat I have ever done is from a pattern called ‘Slouchy Copy Cat Hat’ I made it ages ago and this reminds me that I should revisit it and make a new one 😁
Since my husband's cancer diagnosis, I have been committed to knit hats for patients. Since texture is irritating for patients, I appreciate your recommended patterns. I love the Headsock pattern by Amanda stack! (The brioche hat you showed also looks amazing--I need to start knitting faster...!!!)
I also love the pressed flower pattern. Would be a great stash buster for all the leftover mohair I have along with quit a bit of handsoun!
The Vermonter Hat by Abi Gregorio got me back into knitting years ago :) It is a quick and satisfying knit with bulky yarn and big needles!
Thanks for the informative hat video. I am a sucker for Purl Soho patterns. I have jumped on their Classic Rib hat wagon.
I am (not joking) when I say I’m obsessed with the positivity beanie. I could make it in all the colors!!
I love the Autumn Vibes hat! Perfect for holiday gift giving. Thanks for this video!
There are so many cute hat patterns out there! I always love Lindsey Fowler for classic designs. For cables, I think Wool & Pine’s Deep Winter hat is beautiful. For colorwork, I love the Alaska hat by Camille Descoteaux.
Fun video. As my draw entry, thanks for pointing out the “autumn vibes” hat. That one seems in my wheelhouse.
Thank you for the time and effort to research these beautiful hats.
Thanks!
My favorite hat pattern is Drops, Edge of Twilight. A great pattern! Thanks for this great video now that hat season is upon us.
I love watching your podcasts. They are very well done and informative. I love the Scrap Happy Hat pattern by Shaina Bilow. Happy Knitting
I bought the pressed flowers hat last Spring and want to knit it this fall. It looks beautiful!
I love all of your hat selections..! So hard to pick just one but I would say my favourite is the Basset Hat as it has the ear flaps🐰🤎
Love to knit hats! Thank you spot on! The knitting for Olive book looks fun! Thank you.
Thank you for this podcast. I love mosaic knitting, so the Pressed Flowers hat will be my next cast-on.
My favorite is DEFINITELY father cables by Veronika Jobe! The only hat I’ve ever knit more than once, which says a lot as I usually don’t make duplicates of anything!
Great video! Although I haven't gotten around to making it yet, I love the October Hat
by Sloane Rosenthal.
