Living in Buenos Aires as a coffee addict was very hard for me. Here, average coffee is roasted with sugar and has wheat traces. I uses to pay high price for decent coffee... 3 months ago I stopped drinking coffee cold turkey and introduced yerba mate to my life. My overall health and energy levels have taken a very interesting shift. Thank you very much my sweet and beloved guaraníes for yerba mate ❤❤❤

My Landscaping Boss got me hooked on coffee at 14. Came across Yerba Mate accidentally on TH-cam in a Circle Of Drink video. Tried Yerba Mate & fell in love with it. I add a dash of 🍯 honey. After drinking Mate for a while,.Coffee tastes like mud water. Really don't miss Coffee at all. It's a great switch.

Just my 2 cents. I'm argentinian been drinking mate my whole life. The difference aside from what you describe is that some people like to take a coffee after meal as a digestive. I almost never do that; taking mate after a heavy meal it's not a very good idea.(better with a light breakfast or 5 o'clock tea) Mate is more laxative than digestive. And another difference for me is that I can drink mate before going to sleep, but that depends on the person really even some heavy drinkers can't sleep after drinking mate.

Being Italian myself I can't give up espresso because everybody would think I'm crazy to substitute it with a herb drink 😆, I still sip Mate pretty much all day at my job anyway with 1 or 2 espresso in the morning....I'm suprised that Mate isnt well known in Italy since there are literally millions of italians living in Argentina & Uruguay. Even in Spain I dont think its widely known about for some reason.

I agree! I'm Italian too but I gave up coffee years ago and switched to tea and now recently discovered and experimenting with Mate. Just wondering how much is too much though? I can easily drink 2-3 cups of green tea every morning but I feel a bit nervous about doing the same with Mate considering the caffeine amount.

    • @dl5014

@@bassetto1603 it honestly depends on your caffeine tolerance. Like 3 cups of mate at once has me pretty buzzed & jittery. It's not as strong as espresso, but it's definitely stronger than green tea. Just experiment with it & see what amount works for you.

As an avid tea lover, I've been wondering about this drink for such a long time that finally got one big package! I'd say it tastes like something between tea and coffee. I didn't get any bitterness people are talking about and I enjoyed it as much as a cup of green tea. Some type of coffee gives me jitters but yerba did not. I normally follow a very healthy low carb, plant based diet with intermittent fasting so I don't eat very often. However, I already felt it's appetite suppressing effect and I'm very anxious to see all the benefits in the long run! My question though, is it more beneficial to drink it cold? or is it just a preference? I understand, in South American countries it replaces the morning coffee or tea.

Heat water until it boils and turn off the heat. Put 3 spoonsfull of Yerba Mate add suggar and freeze it. Always worked for me and some people do that down here; way down here in the South. IIn the end you'll prefer the gourd and bombilla, after a time. I would die, if I couldn't drink my 3ltrs of Mate a day. It has everything to make you feel so good and healthy...

If I'll be doing a task that requires that I switch gears a lot, I drink coffee. I am a cab driver and I have to drive/navigate, carry on conversations with customers and listen to dispatch at the same time.

I enjoyed mate for a long time as I am Argentinean and I was like drinking gallons of mate on an empty stomach in most cases (i just cant eat at morning time, still struggling against that) and I was not good for me as It was too acidic. I replaced it with green tea and stevia leaves now and I do not get that strange feeling in my stomach anymore. No carbs/sugars starving, no sleep disruption. It was all fine and pleasant. But finally I got that adrenal fatigue. I got tense, anxious and restless. My mind was racing so fast, it was crazy. Then, I realized how potent and powerful Yerba mate really is. Now I know why it is called "holy'' amongst Amazonian tribes and it is used by shamans! Well it was too powerful for me to drink it throughout the day like water. I still don't how so many people drink it in enormous amounts without any side effect. It is unbelievable for me. Maybe I done something wrong? Maybe there is some special way of drinking it? I miss the woody, smoky taste but can't drink it....

You could have ADHD or just have a heavier caffeine tolerance due to drinking caffeinated beverages more often. Mate has substantially less caffeine in it.
If you do have ADHD stimulants often can be quite relaxing as they calm the mind, racing thoughts and help one focus that has it generally. It's why they prescribe such strong ones to such individuals who are diagnosed with it, though they're honestly too strong and dangerous as a medication, usually after months of using them they require months to taper off of them and can give quite severe withdrawal effects that can last years.
Caffeinated / naturally stimulating beverages are generally the best way to go as long as they're taken in moderation as they're quite easy to stop taking and they don't hurt your body.

@@yocecil3538 Yes, it is okay. But I find it curious that they are 90 bags and weigh 135 grams, that is 1.5 grams each. I recommend you search "mate cocido" next time, here in Argentina I usually buy "Taragüí" (Rosamonte is Ok to) in bags of 3 grams. I do not know what difference of intensity there will be, I just found it curious.

On the other hand, if you want to drink Mate as it is traditionally consumed, you will need the complete equipment: mate (container), yerba mate, bombilla (bulb with filter) and maybe a thermos to take it anywhere. But it is not something simple, there are many steps that must be followed to get a good mate and many silly mistakes that can lead to a bad mate.
Steps to follow: heat the water without boiling, between 80 ° C and 90 ° C. Fill the mate with two thirds of yerba, cover with palm, invert, shake, and return gently to the initial position. In this way the dust is up and does not clog the bombilla; also the yerba is tilted, leaving a gap. Now the bombilla must be placed in the hole, and push to the bottom, it must remain (approximately) perpendicular to the surface of the grass.
After that, you can "cebar" (to serve water on) the first mate. But wait, it must be slowly and patiently. It should be with small jets leaving the grass to get wet little by little. In this way half of the yerba remains moist and the other half dry (then it will get wet with each "cebada" (times served)).
Just now that the first mate is served, you can drink it, and you have to drink all the water in it. Then it is again served and given to the next person in the round.
When you see that all the yerba is wet and there are sticks floating it is time to change the yerba and return to the first step.
      COMMON MISTAKES:
      * Boil the water. If the water is boiled the yerba burns, the first mates are to strong and quickly washed (they are left without flavor), besides that you can obviously burn your tongue.
      * Put a lot or little of yerba. Mattes are very long or very short, this makes difficult the sharing.
      * Flood the mate. It washes fast, at the beginning it has to be an "island" of dry yerba that will be moistened little by little to obtain a lasting flavor.
      * Move the bulb. This is one of the worst mistakes. Please, DON'T TOUCH IT; the mate will be washed. And nobody wants a washed mate.
PD: sorry for my (google's translate) english

Faulty study. A) it was only a single study and the fact that it hasn't been recreated to the same results is telling B) They used people who were also tobacco users which muddies the data. There's also a possibility that the water was too hot which potentially releases a carcinogen. There's been no definitive links made and countries that drink mate don't have particularly shocking rates of cancer.

I like many of your video tutorials but the "facts" of this video are so skewed that I think you're coming off as more preaching than informing. Coffee: used to "fuel the global corporate system. Makes many drinkers "crash" and have "jitters" Mate: Has more "healing compounds" (how do you specify that) than green tea, "uniquely stimulates the mind and body" and creates a sense of well-being. Not exactly an objective comparison there... I'm sorry if I come across as negative, I do like your other videos and find them helpful, but this one just felt like preaching to the choir under the guise of objectivity.

Not more healing effects than japanese green tea

    • @Catnipfumar
      @Catnipfumar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

sorry japan it has more antioxidants than green tea no matter what country the green tea is from. Lets be factual and not bias. I know Japan has tea rituals and green tea is the drink of choice in that country. Please read the facts that science has shown that Yerba mate is more healing than green tea:
YERBA MATE VS GREEN TEA: IS YERBA MATE GREEN TEA?
Let’s compare Yerba Mate vs Green Tea. Green tea has been dubbed as the “Elixir of Life” for its long list of health benefits. But organic Yerba mate is considered to have, not only the health benefits of green tea, but also the strength of coffee, and the feel-good euphoria of chocolate. While yerba mate and green tea have many similar benefits, many consider the former as the healthier drink of choice: after all, there’s a good reason why the herbal tea is Argentina’s national drink. The answer to the question whether one is better than the other lies in their benefits and nutritional content.
      Yerba mate vs green tea
      Yerba mate vs Green tea
YERBA MATE AND GREEN TEA’S SIMILARITIES
Yerba mate and green tea are tea-based drinks that contain extracts from the leaves of certain plants. Yerba mate comes from the dried leaves of the South American rainforest holly plant while green tea comes from varieties of the Camellia Sinensis plant that originated in China but can also be found in many different regions in the world such as India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Hawaii, and even in the United States.
Yerba mate vs green tea: Both drinks bring about similar health benefits due to their similar properties, which are:
      anti-inflammatory
      anti-carcinogenic
      anti-obesity
      promote a healthy cardiovascular system
      promote a healthy gastrointestinal tract
      improves digestion
      promote weight loss
      lowers blood pressure
      lowers LDL cholesterol
      contains high levels of antioxidants
contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals
      good source of energy
      improves concentration and mental clarity
Both of these tea-based drinks help to promote a healthy heart; support weight loss efforts by reducing exercise fatigue and produce a boost of energy; reduce risks for certain cancers and even help to stop the production of cancer cells; reduce inflammation and bacteria in the body; and help to reduce oxidative stress that causes chronic and life-threatening diseases.
While yerba mate and green tea promote overall health, mate has been proven in many scientific studies to contain more antioxidants and nutrients, making it superior to green tea. So how do these teas compare? Let’s take a look at Yerba mate vs Green tea.
YERBA MATE AND GREEN TEA: A COMPARISON
      1. ANTIOXIDANT CONTENT
Green tea contains many different antioxidants but the most dominant is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or simply EGCG. It is said to be responsible for green tea’s many health benefits.
Yerba mate, on the other hand, contains the antioxidant chlorogenic acid, which is the same antioxidant present in green coffee beans.
      Green tea vs Yerba mate
Yerba mate vs Green tea: Yerba mate contains the antioxidant chlorogenic acid.
EGCG brings about the following benefits:
      slows down the aging process,
      promotes cognitive function,
      promotes a healthy heart,
promotes weight loss through thermogenesis and fat oxidation,
contains anti-cancer properties by inhibiting the growth of tumors in the stomach, liver, lungs, and colon.
      Chlorogenic Acid’s benefits include:
      reduces blood pressure levels
lowers cholesterol to promote cardiovascular health
      anti-bacterial
improves mental clarity and cognitive function
      reduces and attacks cancer cells
slows down the release of glucose
Both antioxidants provide roughly the same benefits but yerba mate seems to have more antioxidant content than green tea, making it superior in the fight against oxidative stress.
The Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety published a clinical study that concluded yerba mate contains the largest antioxidant levels among 25 tea-based and non-tea-based drinks, which included green tea. A 2010 study, which was conducted by a Dr. Elvira de Mejia, or the University of Illinois, reported that yerba mate has more antioxidants than green tea.
In terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity) value, each gram of green tea has a value of 1,350 units while yerba mate has a value of 6000 units. ORAC value comes from a lab test that seeks to quantify the total antioxidant capacity of certain foods.
These studies and tests show promising scientific proof that seems to answer the many questions regarding yerba mate vs green tea. So is yerba mate green tea’s superior counterpart in the tea-based drinks market? Let’s learn more about the two’s similarities and differences.
      2. CAFFEINE CONTENT
While both yerba mate and green tea contain caffeine, the former definitely has more of this energy-boosting compound. One cup of green tea contains 25mg of caffeine while mate has 80mg.
Yerba mate vs green tea caffeine content
Yerba mate vs Green tea: Average caffeine content
Caffeine is responsible for both of the tea drinks’ benefits that include: mental alertness, a boost of energy, metabolism boost, and thermogenesis that promote weight loss.
Though mate has more or less the same caffeine content of coffee, most mate drinkers don’t experience the “crash” that comes with coffee drinking. Mate has also been known to improve mood, help with depressive symptoms, and provide the feeling of euphoria. Jitters and irritability, which are both side effects of caffeine, are not experienced by yerba mate drinkers.
Because of its higher caffeine content, mate seems to be a better source of energy than green tea. Mate also contains 3 xanthine alkaloids, which are mild stimulants, and said to be responsible for the tea’s unique and healthy boost of energy. It can also be a better drink to improve concentration and mental clarity, as well as more effective for weight loss since thermogenesis is also more efficient.
      3. NUTRIENT CONTENT
Yerba mate contains 196 active compounds while green tea contains 144, which means mate contains 52 more active chemicals than the latter. These compounds or chemicals include 24 vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, 15 amino acids, as well as other compounds that include fatty acids, flavonoids, chlorophyll, trace minerals, and polyphenols.
One cup of mate contains the vitamins A, C, E, B1, B3, and B5; the minerals calcium, magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, and iron. Green tea, on the other hand, contains the vitamins C, A, B1, B12, K, and P; and the minerals copper, nickel, zinc, phosphorus, fluoride, iron, calcium, and magnesium.
According to the famous study by the Pasteur Institute and Paris Scientific Society in 1964, they concluded that “it is difficult to find a plant equal to mate’s nutritional value.” And that mate practically contains all the nutrients needed to sustain life. When it comes to nutritional values at Yerba mate vs Green tea debate, one cup of mate beats one cup of green tea.
      4. WEIGHT LOSS
One of probably more popular points in this article is a comparison of yerba mate vs green tea weight loss properties. Again, both green tea and yerba mate are known to help promote weight loss. Both are known to promote thermogenesis - which is the body’s natural way of burning stored fat through the increase of body temperature. Both drinks are also known to boost metabolism and suppress appetite.
Yerba mate Green tea Weight loss
Yerba mate and Green tea promote thermogenesis.
Most of these weight loss benefits come from the drinks’ caffeine content, and obviously, since mate contains more caffeine than green tea, it is safe to say it could have the better capacity to support weight loss efforts. Yerba mate vs Green tea: Yerba mate wins a point again.
However, it must be noted that drinking mate or even green tea while fasting can be dangerous. Toxicity has been known to occur when individuals drink caffeine-infused drinks while fasting.
      5. SIDE EFFECTS
There have been certain reports that yerba mate seems to increase the risk of certain cancers, but clinical trials have not proven significant results. Side effects, on the other hand, have been reported, but are limited to caffeine-related effects.
While both drinks share many of the same health benefits, they also share the same side effects when you drink too much. These side effects, which are similar to most caffeine-based drinks, include:
      headaches
      insomnia
      upset stomach
      diarrhea
Green tea and yerba mate may not be advisable for pregnant women and those who are nursing, as well as those who are suffering from anemia and bleeding disorders. For anyone suffering from anxiety disorders, both drinks are also to be avoided due to the boost of energy brought about by these drinks.
In terms of side effects, both drinks are relatively similar. Yerba mate vs Green tea: draw.
GREEN TEA VS YERBA MATE: THE BOTTOM LINE
There is much debate to the question, is yerba mate green tea’s better option? While green tea has been hailed for its health benefits, anti-aging properties, and calming effects for decades, yerba mate has only begun to arrive in the Western market as a healthy drink option.
And while mate has an acquired taste, it hasn’t stopped the Western world from consuming Argentina’s national drink to experience its world of health benefits.
Yerba mate vs green tea: On many different levels, from antioxidants to nutritional value, to weight loss effects, to caffeine content, it can be seen from scientific studies that yerba mate and green tea do go neck-to-neck, but the obvious healthier choice is hands down the former.
And while scientific studies on yerba mate have not been much publicized compared to green tea, it must be noted that such studies have shown great significant and promising results when it comes to Yerba mate being the superior drink of choice.

Yerba mate makes me crash just as hard as coffee. No anxiety tho.

Doesn't sound normal, no. Perhaps lower your intake and see if anything changes.

I've had a live hate relationship with coffee for decades. It cures my brain fog but gives me migraine when I come off it. I am a night guard and I can't doze off. I discovered mate a couple of years ago and it has been a life saver. If I drink coffe for social reasons I just go back to mate the next day and I don't get the migraine

are you sure you are not a bit biased because of your last name??.......just kidding, ym is the bomb, i love everything about this herb, shit i could snort it if i could, i love the way it tastes even if its straight ym and not a blend, i love the way it makes me feel and i can only imagine how packed with goodness this green juice of the gods must be, i own an small architecture firm and all my guys got hooked to this thing, a pound of yerba mate is worth more than a pound of blow in my office, we can't imagine being as productive without it, we drink it hot and we also drink it cold brazilian style with lemon juice. i probably drink easily 2 to 4 liters a day. truly a beautiful thing.

Depends on brand, preparation, if it's a blend or by itself, how you brew it, etc... If you like green tea you'll probably like mate.

Yerba mate tastes like a cross between regular green tea and rooibos. It is nowhere near as "bitter" as coffee. Not even close.
