  • Apparently, most short-legged dogs develop this health problem at some point in their life. Sami has been skipping on his back leg for a while now and we had no idea why. Here is what the MRI showed and here are the solutions to make it better! I hope this video will be helpful.

    My pup genetically is 50% Westie and 50% Chihuahua but in looks, temperament, and health is like 80% Westie. She's only about 10 inches tall and is cream colored on her top side and snow white on her underside...as her groom grows out she gets more white. Lucy's really a beautiful girl with a Westie face, shape and tail. She has horrible allergies and has had luxating patella surgery on both knees about 10 years ago. My vet tolld me that Westie who have luxating patella and hip displasia issues generally can still live a great life. At the age of 12, Lucy is just now starting to slow down on some days...but is still a tornado when she's feeling good. Love your Sami. I miss my Autumn and Daisy (my first two full Westies).

    Our first westie had this issue, our male westie at this time also experienced this. My chiropractor adjusted both dogs tailbone area, it was successful & they never had the issue again. Consider a knowledgeable skilled chiropractor. Mine of 20+ years is constantly researching & studying and up to date on all kinds of healthcare, he's kept me out of a wheelchair, so find a reputable one & give it a try. Bless your precious puppo & you!❤🕊

    Miruna, I felt bad for you when you asked his orthopedic doctor if this was your fault. You’re the very best Westie Mom ever.
    Sami is a happy puppy. He is loved by you so much, and it’s obvious that he has an abundance of love for you. You put out such good advice for other Westie owners.
    You should be a spokesperson for the breed.

    Hi Murina, I just lost my 15 1/2 yo Westie 2 months ago. I will miss him the rest of my life. I sleep with his harness and toy that he would grab when he didn't feel well. It's been really rough. But we did recently get a new Westie puppy. And I love him with all my heart and soul. But.....back to my 15 1/2 yo Westie. He had a luxating patella and when I learned he had this when he was under a year old, I envisioned that he would be crippled by the time he reached old age. But he was NOT, thankfully. When he was just a few months old, I noticed his joints making a "popping" sound when he would move. I talked it over with the vet and she put him on a glucosamine chondroitin supplement that he took for the rest of his life. It had to be changed up a few times due to his all allergies, but he always took it daily. I can tell you that up until the day he suddenly became very, very ill, he was still running. That's right....still running at 15 1/2 years old. I don't think he ever developed arthritis, at least if he did, it was only very mild. And that's because of the joint supplement he took all his life. I will be starting my puppy on this when he's old enough for it, even though he does not have any joint issues (at this time). The vet said that glucosamine chondroitin is evidence based and has shown to be really good for joints. So, we'll be putting him on it for preventative reasons. But so sorry to hear about your Sami. Didn't know that about the beach. I can tell you guys really love Sami. Love calls for sacrifice. Is there a sidewalk before the sand? I wonder if he can walk there with you guys? Anyway, take good care of your pup. I know you guys will. Keep up the joint supplements. They really do help. Sending love and hope ♥

    Hi Miruna. Did you know there are dog buggies? They’re simple and light and fold up easily to fit in the car… I lined mine with Vetbed and it could fit two westies (a very cute westies-fest) in a probably overloaded buggy! I was a westie breeder and then kept them as pets for many years. I found that as they got older, they still loved and insisted on their walks, but I could pop them in this dog buggy when they got tired and they then were very happy to continue of the walk being chauffeured!!!… of course… they are the bosses!!!

    I'm glad you got Sami checked out and finally got a diagnosis. You are a wonderful dog momma and Sami is so lucky! My Finn had the same limp and was diagnosed at 8 months old with Legg-Calve- Perthes disease, which is not uncommon in Westies, and had to have hip surgery in October 2022. He's doing great now but it took awhile. And it's scary to put our little buddy's under anesthesia and to have surgery. Thank you for sharing about this and I need to do better with making sure Finn doesn't do as much jumping on and off furniture. Physio-therapy will be great for Sami.

    You are a great dog Mommy 💖 Sami is so lucky. My husband and I went through a disc rupture with our 12 year old Labrador and couldn't do much more to help her we had the same questions and "guilt" thinking it was our fault but is just a natural thing that happened to her and we had to let her go, knowing we did the best we could and let her her do everything she liked to do before and after she was diagnosed and we are glad we did because her and us have the greatest memories for life... so listening to you reminds me about our journey with our baby girl Molly, difference is that Sami is young and he will be ok..... Today we have 3nlabrador and our westie Tesla.
    Thank you for your videos. Tesla and I are excited to see the adventures in NY!!!!!

    My 12 yr old Bentley started holding up his hind leg sometimes when eating at a very young age, say 3-4 months. Later he started the "skipping" and I too thought it was cute and playful. Later on his knee cap popped out and he was in pain. I rushed him to the vet and they gave him something for the pain and I carried him around for a couple days. The vet said his knee cap wasn't loose enough to warrant surgery so we didn't go that route and it never popped all the way out again. But he continued to skip off and on and still does. His rear legs seem pretty stiff these days and our walks are very short now although he plays and wrestles with our 9 month old Westie. At his last checkup the vet pushed on his lower back and he winced. She said it was some arthritis and put him on a supplement for joints and arthritis pain that helps a little. If it gets worse the vet has said she will prescribe pain medication. I've always felt like maybe I should have done more. Your video was very helpful and a good reminder that I should try harder to prevent him jumping on & off furniture. Bentley weighs 21 lbs. I'm not sure I could carry him around in a backpack. He has also started displaying some night time anxiety & dementia which is heartbreaking. The vet has prescribed Trazadone for that although I'm not sure it helps. Love to you & Sami. ❤️❤️❤️

    Oh wow, I am so sorry to hear this news, but I am happy you finally have a definite cause and a plan for managing the situation.
    Our Westie is almost 5 years old and hasn't yet displayed the common Westie skin and bone issues.
    However he has gained weight. We were warned long ago not to let him become overweight but now he is. 😢 So he is now at increased risk for bone issues.
    Our Westie also has a sensitive stomach. we never feed him people food, but unfortunately we did increase his calorie intake. Now he has gained too much weight and needs to go on a diet. This is a problem, because an empty stomach often results in his vomiting bile (acidic stomach juices).
    We will closely monitor his intake l, try to exercise him more and hope it all works out.
    Wishing you and Sami the best for managing his most recent health issues.

    Both of our dachshund’s had disk problems at some point in their lives. The swimming pool was great therapy. They loved the water but rest was also very helpful. They lived to be 17 and 15. The jumping and the stairs are kid the utmost importance. Watch Sami carefully because he is quick and will do both of those before you can get to him. I didn’t realize Westies had this issue also. So far Atticus hasn’t had any problems and he is 7 so hopefully he is doing well. We have a long ramp going out the back door of the house and it has been there Al of his life. We just got a new dachshund puppy so my husband is working on a ramp for the sofa and I hope Atticus will begin to use it too. ❤❤❤I love your videos and good luck!

    Hi. I am a westie mom of 2 girls that are 5 years old. One of them, Heidi, started doing the hop on the same leg as Sami just a few days ago. I just saw your you tube and felt it was interesting that you posted just as Heidi experienced this. I will follow some of your ideas to see if it helps her. Thanks so much for the posts you put out there. Sami is a sweetie!!

    • @maryguthrie-scott7410
      @maryguthrie-scott7410 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we took Heidi to the vet because her leg got worse. They did X-rays and nothing is broken. They said it was her foot. It was swollen and tender but no skin broken. It was determined that it was probably a bite from her sister as they were wrestling. She is on antibiotics and anti inflammatories and starting to get better. So that is the story.

    My MacKenna Rose was doing the skip with the same leg as Sami, she has been diagnosed with a loose kneecap (luxating patella), her doctor can’t duplicate it so he is not that worried about it. I captured it on video to show them I am not crazy. I have her on Meloxicam, it’s only day 3 but I can see a difference. He also wants her to rest, short walks and avoid the jumping just like your doctors have said. Here’s hoping Sami feels better!

    ey there thanks for this video. Lots of fun therapy will be for him . I recommend hydrotherapy sessions my pooch loves it! He hasn’t got any issues but I’ve taken him each summer as an alternative exercise , also I wanted him used to water and also I wanted to prevent joint and back issues. He swims but has never needed the treadmill option. We are UK based.He comes with me everywhere too and is always mistaken for a west or. I think Sam and Milo are twin brothers! I also have a doggy back pack which he loves and gets so much attention in!! I recommend the K9 sports sack ! I’m a new subbie and you are just like me with my pooch they even have similar outfits and toys. Thanks for your content🐾💕

    @Topol60 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My Bella started the same hops when she was very young, and our vet said it’s the floating kneecap! We could have a fixing surgery , but I chose not to. She was not even one year old, I thought it’s quite traumatic for a pop to go through an orthopedic surgery and spend months in crate to heal. Fortunately I noticed a lot of improvements as she grew older and the hopping happened very rare. Now that she is 10 (almost 11) I notice she does it only in very cold days! It’s fortunate that we live in Texas! 😂
    As far as keeping her away from jumping up and down, it’s very hard! She loves to go up and down the furniture! How many ramps can I install around the house!!!!!😵‍💫😳

    • @WestieVibes
      @WestieVibes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is great! I'm glad you didn't do the surgery and her knee improved on its own!
      I know what you're saying about the jumping. Sami also does it and we would need two stairs/ramps in the living room, which would take a lot of room. I am working now on getting him to "ask" by staring at me, and then I put him down. But it only works 20% of the time 😅😅

    Both my Westies limp a bit when cornering or going down a set of stairs. My home is 2 stories and they’ve been going up and down the stairs their whole lives. There a ramps for them to get on the living room sofa and a middle platform for them to get on the bed without jumping too high. My eldest uses the ramp but my younger one avoids it lol.

    Hi Miruna, Yuki's been having hydrotherapy using the under water treadmill and also having class IV laser therapy, both initially for her post patella luxation surgery and Osteoarthritis, both of these treatments may also help Sami. We have a wonderful vet physio doing the laser and she also noticed Yuki's spine was also showing signs of pain when she was pinching the sides of the lower spine. So we are continuing with more laser and hydrotherapy as it's really helping 👍🏻if you have a vet physio that your veterinary surgery can recommend, I'd highly recommend going to one ❤ sending Sami big woofs from Yuki_the_westie and her mummies 😘

    New info for me!! I’ve had 2 westies with the limp. One was the patella, one was hip dysplasia. Both happened when they were older.
    I swore to everything Holy I would NEVER PUSH A STROLLER. Yeah, Stella had a purple stroller, and I pushed it.
    Can’t wait to see what sort of backpack you get. Even tiny LuCy seems to be too big- but I’m short. That’s how I ended up with the stroller. She’s so small, she gets stepped on in large crowds. So much easier to put her in the stroller.
    (A stroller is a pram in some places)

      It's called KimiMove Rapid. I'm not sure if it's made in Portugal or if you can find it somewhere else too.

    Also consider Chiropractic as an option.

    This is really interesting. I have noticed symptoms in Charlie, very minor but I have noticed this when he is out and about. I too got dog steps to get on and off the bed but he refused to use them. He did ten and a half years old so not a young dog. What are the supplements that Sami is having?

      I wonder why he doesn't like the steps. Is it slippery once he climbs down? If we don't have a carpet near the steps, Sami slips and it's uncomfortable. But he always uses them even so. I hope you can get Charlie to use them, it would be good for him (maybe motivate him with treats) 😅
      The joint supplements are called KimiMove Rapid.

    My advice is to check, check and check other vets opinions. I used to trust my vet and it was not good. She will tell me something that was not accurate and that caused my Yorkshire beautiful daughter 🐶 pain and even her life. I traveled to The UsA, France and UK and ALL vets missed in their diagnostics. Many times I had to take things on my on hands and because of it I saved my Pauline. However, this last time I was alone and a bit sick. I don’t trust vets anymore. I trust when people tell me their experiences. And natural medicine. You must read the instructions and side effects 😅of the medicine you give your dog as if it were your baby. All medications have side effects. Natural remedies are much better and effective. Me myself I use curcuma for inflation and is much better than medicine. In my family I have medical doctors and I don’t trust many doctors because most of them don’t have the intelligence required to heal their pacients.
