Excellent conversation about an excellent author. Will be looking for "The King's General". I have never forgotten "Rebecca" and loved "My Cousin Rachel." Thank you both...and Mona.😘
I read The King's General years ago and remember loving it despite my sympathies lying with Parliament - Sir Thomas Fairfax is one of my heroes (please read The Rider of the White Horse by Rosemary Sutcliff). I own a bookshop in New Zealand and have ordered it for the shop. It's due for release in March and a customer and I are eagerly awaiting its arrival. My customer has never read it so I hope I haven't raised her expectations.
I have that book, I bought it back in the 70s. I live close the Helford river, so it is very special to me. I love The Loving Spirit, set more Fowey way, but it is one of favourite Du Maurier books too.
A wonderful seventeenth century novel is AS MEAT LOVES SALT by Maria McCann. It's set during the English Civil War. The protagonist is a disillusioned, passionate man who joins the Parliamentarian forces. He grapples with his own complex emotions, desires, and (im)moral struggles, which become entangled in his relationships with others, especially with a fellow soldier. Their intense, secretive bond grows and explores themes of obsession, loyalty, and betrayal. The book delves into the tensions between personal identity and societal expectations, as well as the brutalities of war. It's one of my favorite books!

The King’s General is a wonderful novel, which is based on the author’s family history and her historic family home.
Lovely vlog. Can’t find our copy of The King’s General which I haven’t read but may get the audiobook. I the Helford is a lovely spot.

This book is on my list for 2025, this podcast was super cut with the funny snoring :P
Thanks for the great conversation. Will be definitely suggesting this book to bookclub and have added to my reading list. Happy 2025.
Is the essay on why we look down on popular fiction available in print? Sounds interesting.
The literary agent admitting to not reading all of du Maurier's work, because there are too many... this is literally your job!
