The key to the perfect moonwalk is to not push back with the front foot having the ball of your foot on the floor but to bring that foot up so that the tip of your shoe is driving straight down into the floor with your toes perfectly straight and then pushing yourself back with just the tip of the sole of your shoe not bent at all. The difference between the two is sort of like the difference between a ballet dancer who doesn't quite get up all the way on her toes such that her toes are bent and she's actually on the balls of her feet and one who does get up all the way on her toes and her toes are driving straight down into the floor. The visual difference between on the ball of the foot and on the tip of the toe is EVERYTHING, whether in ballet or doing the moonwalk.
