Every New Zealander will be in awe. Jade is prized by Maori people, the indigenous people of New Zealand. You have an incredible source available to you. Rachelle, Australia
I can definitely hear the difference. It reminds me when I used to work at a bank. I could hear the difference between the old dimes made of silver, and the newer ones made of whatever they're now made of. Silver dimes make a distinct sound when dropped on the counter.
I would frequently say: "this is an excellent, high quality piece of nephrite Jade, worth at least $90. I'm really looking forward to cutting it and showing you the color inside. Someone will be happy to turn this one into cabs or a polished carving. This is exactly what you want to find when you're out here." -but I'm a very optimistic rock finder! Maybe I'm over the top. Dan, you are so optimistic about going out there and enjoying the day, now you gotta set up that sale! Thanks for being so humble and life-loving.
I can't get over the look that these pieces have after you cut and polish them into beautiful pieces of Art, what we know as Marketable Jewlery......in awe.....................
Love this video! I live near a lot of serpentinite so I appreciate your showing how you select the rocks to take home Usually, when I can't carry any more, I recite to myself "don't look down, don't look down" until I get to my car!
Always love watching your videos, especially finding that dallasite. It’s beautiful !!! Glad to see you’re mending so good since your surgery. Keep on healing and recovering to gain your strength back. Love the search for jade !!
My family had a jadein that redibrown skin in the living room In the 70s. Grandma having lived as an expat in China in the 30s had a collection of phenomenal gemstone. Awesome growing up seeing polishedeggs, jade carvings and geodes of all sorts.
Oh ffs, Dan isn't THAT old! You're not old till the mid-70's to 80's, when you can't get out to do things and wouldn't want to anyway. Dan is the youngest dude I know! 😎💯 Keep on keepin' on Dan! ❤
yo Dan: Back in the day we carved out stout lengths of wood to create "yokes". Shaped to fit comfortably across the shoulders about 3' or so long with a chord on each end dangling hooks that will carry buckets of water or in your case rocks. The loads are balanced and almost hands free and still could use backpack. Mules were us! Happy collecting... man that looks like fun!
Dan, just want ya to know your positive energy transcends the airwaves and most undoubtedly makes a big difference in my day to be able to watch you rockhounding! You're one of the biggest influences on my own love for rocks, keep up your awesome work, stay super positive and drowning us in the awesomeness and knowledge! Many blessings from ol DE🤙

Good to see Dan, you are an inspiration to me, I too in the recent weeks have undergone open heart surgery and I can see that a full recovery can be made just need to stick at it and you have such great passion in what you do. Thankyou

I loved this humorous video. I can relate. Loved the lesson on Nephrite Jade explained so simply. Thank you Dan so so much, I'm 100% here for the outdoor walks in beautiful BC 🌿🍃🍁💚
I know that feel of not being able to stop, absolutely. I got the same problem. x) A couple weeks ago I was on vacation on a volcanic island for a couple weeks, and I discovered a pile of tailings left behind from carving roads into the mountains - and that was probably among the top 3 areas I've ever visited in my life for rockhounding. I found so much botryoidal, druzy chalcedony, mostly pink and purple and in rather big chunks, as well as some really nice sand roses, that I could barely carry the backpack back into the hotel every time I was over there. The main problem was... the allowed weight for my luggage on the way back was only 20 kg, and around 10 kg of that was already clothing and stuff. So I really, really needed to sort out the nicest ones and I thought I'd ask the hotel if I could set up a little corner where other people in the area could just grab the pieces that I couldn't carry back home but unfortunately they were against it. :< So I ended up burying them in a small desert area nearby for when I come back next time, like a pirate.
My best friend knows all about carrying all the heavy. I try to but he always insist and then tells me I have enough, But my Hands and pockets are empty?? When we return they are full too.
My daughter brings home incredibly large rocks that she carries out to the mountains and rivers. I have 20-50 pound boulders of jasper, serpentine (she called that one a dragon egg) etc. around the house. I am always amazed at how such a petite person can wrangle such treasures. She even brought me a 9 foot long redwood root that is about a foot in diameter. I think she has telekinesis lol
Lol! I do the same thing while in Arizona!! Only so many will fit in the rv!! Did you ever see the Long, long trailer,With Lucy and Desi?? 🤣 🤣 that's me!! Mt husband thinks I'm crazy, but I got the rocks!! Have a great day and Happy Hunting!!👍😁
I had walked many gravel bars in B.C. I live in Ontario, but when in your neck of the woods I also find jade and lots of other stones. One that’s called Chinese writing stone and another the is called flower stone I believe, especially on Vancouver island! Just watched you kinda was a bit of a fix for my insatiable addiction to rock hounding! Thx Dan, love you videos!!!
Dan, I don't know how many backpacks I've destroyed carrying 100 lbs of rocks every day for a week, but it's hard to pass up when you are loaded and see something amazing. Thanks for taking us jade hunting. Come to NH we have gem cordieorite!
every day I contemplate my bad life decisions!!! Love your videos!!! I wish we were neibors I think we would have a lot of together. You are one of the people who I watch on TH-cam and set a great example for me, just getting out side and doing something~ANYTHING! I live in Mesa Az and have recently discovered a place in the Superstition Mountains that has lots of history and geology~encouraging me to explore! I am 59, thinking about getting into goldpanning just to do something outside~ and see what I can find! Thanks again!!!
From gold panning to rock collecting im always looking to your amazing videos and as always ..another winner filled with knowledge and amazing pieces 👏👏👏
What a fantastic video Dan, for us Prairie dwellers still suffering in the frozen tundra it's a ray of sunshine and joy. I can commiserate with you about the addictive unstoppable need to take too much stone back on a rock hunt. We have a least another two full months before the hunt is on here in Manitoba, however your amazing content sure helps me get through the endless winter freeze. Missing my home Province of B.C. today for sure!
I would love to go on one of your jade adventures! Just the glow of the light through the slices, is enough to make me want to find some of my own, and take it to a friend to have it cut!
I’m feelin’ the excitement Dan! 🤗 From one rockhound to another- we never know when to stop - I think it’s when our house is full to the brim with rocks- 😅
Any time you say "Serpentine" I get reminded of my watercolor paints, I have a tube that uses ground up serpentine as a pigment, made by Daniel Smith. Seeing as how common this rock is, it makes a lot more sense now to use it for painting and it is one of my favorite colors when painting foliage. There is also a color that uses Jadeite as a pigment but Serpentine is by far my fav.
You need a trolley/cart! You can get garden ones with big wheels for uneven surfaces that fold down for storage, they're meant for moving heavy pots but would work great for your rocks I think
Love these videos. Makes me want spring to be here already. We still have so much snow in northern bc but this helps the pain of waiting for spring rock hounding.
Am new to your channel but loving it! That location would kill me. So many rocks, so many trips to the truck. Gloriously fab tutorial as well. Much appreciated. 😊
I have to say, Dan, that of all the rocks you picked up, the gemmy Serpentine was by far my most favorite! I think if I manage to get to the Frazier someone, I'm going to look for some of the Serpentine and make some jewelry out of it, because the green was stunning in that rock! I don't care that it is a softer rock, I LOVE it!
Hello Dan Always love your content. One thing I do when looking for bigger rocks. I pack about a dozen heavy duty cloth grocery bags in my backpack and leave them full along my path. It makes for several trips back and forth to the truck but you might find something else along the way. Can’t wait for the snow to melt in northern Alberta to see what the rivers bring down to find.
Well, if I wasn't already a subscriber, this would have earned it for sure. I love the scenery and Dan's absolute joy in what he does makes me happy. Such pretty rocks!
You can't find rocks like this in the rivers here, but the last city I lived in was a very old medieval city and when the tide was low in summer you could find lots of pottery shards and other old objects along the banks. Very fun thing to do on a nice summer day.
I recenctly found your channel Dan and I just want to tell you I love your videos and styles!! So cool to explore and find cool stuff is almost like Im with you in your aventures, you are great!!
Wow Dan. Your gold prospecting videos first attracted me to your channel, but I really enjoy watching you hunt for jade. I wish I could walk along that gravel bar with you.
I brought a 600 lb. water polished emerald, green flawless boulder 35 years ago from an old man who lived on the Fraser River, he drove a digger for a job. Some years later I drove from Vancouver to Alaska following the Fraser River for some time, beautiful River.
We have a long history in New Zealand of jade carvings with the local Maori, they call it "Pounamu" pronounced "poh-nah-muu" . they use a mix of jade , bowenite and serpintine. lovely when carved by the local people with maori Tiki and designs .
Recently got into an on line discussion about nephrite and its close association with asbestos. Jade does have a mono crystalline structure, like asbestos. That means when working jade on a grinding wheel you should definitely be using a mask, the fine particles may be harmful.
Every rock person that has been weighed down by impossibly heavy bag and full pockets can never resist the "ooh another pretty rock," and you will find a way or place to be able take it with you.
loved this episode of you just looking at rocks. would love to see an episode of you beachcombing in and around the oyster river. like an educational vid
Awesome finds!! Cant wait to see what's in that big boulder!! Its always nice to spend a day out on the gravel bars, way too much snow up here right now but hopefully it'll start melting sometime in march. Can't wait to get back out digging again!!🙂
I am laughing so hard at your video. Leaving the backpack by the nice rock, stacking rocks to find on your way back, telling yourself you aren't going to pick up any more, and continuing to look and pick up with a full bag already. I can so relate. I love your videos.
This is an amazing river. Gold, Jade, serpentine and more. I imagine Garnet. I do enjoy my time walking and looking for rocks and stones here in Michigan. We have Not only the great Petoskey stone, but the Leelanau green stone, agates galore, Charlevoix, silver in rocks can be found up in Lake Superior. Along with many other minerals and copper. Beautiful Copper Harbor over looks Lake Superior.😊😊 thanks for a great video. The cut jades are just breath taking.
while i was stationed in south korea i found this cool green rock in a creek. i liked it because i could see light shine through it and it was fist sized. put that thing in my pocket and walked around some more then found several others that were smaller. some were kinda nice so i grabbed those too. i dropped the glass looking ones because i didn't think they were as interesting looking. the marbly ones appealed to me more. i know it sounds like it was super easy, but it took all day and i basally ruined my shoes. every one of my cool looking rocks was confiscated before i left. turns out they were all jade and i wasn't allowed to pick them up let alone keep any of them. kind of a bummer.
the rock obsession is ok Dan, one time i found a massive fossil plate on a hunting trip but my saddle bags were already packed right full of fossils (it wouldnt have fit anyway) so i carried this chunk of fossil with me on the saddle for the 3-4 hour ride back to the truck, and across many rivers and steep hills. theres just some rocks that need to come home with you!
Hiya Dan, awesome video! I'm hoping to get out to the Fraser this summer sometime. I'm curious why you didn't take the quad out to the bar, park it in the middle and search all around? You still get your exercise without pushing yourself so hard! Stay safe, can't wait for the next one!
Sweet Jesus!!! How exciting!! Thank you for sharing! Yah - I'd be like a mule out there ... packing those beautiful rocks around like I owned them!!! Great find!
Dan, I would love to see a rock like the one @10:40 put into an abrasive rock tumbler. You could use a polishing media harder than the gem serpentine, but softer than the jade. Imagine polishing the jade free of the serpentine at the transition, you could deduce more about the processes forming the jade! On a side note, is there a process for cooking jade to artificially improve its appearance?
It just dawned on me that by watching this video I am enabling Dan's Jade addiction.
Ive always been an enabler... Always happy to enable a fella as nice as dan!
Wish he'd give up the "jade" for the gold... Gold.. GOLD!
LOL...
It beats cocaine and hookers!
He is a jade dealer

This whole video is just Dan being a kid in a candy store. I love it!

Watching your videos makes me luv and appreciate where i live..beautiful british columbia 🇨🇦🥰thnx Dan..
