Materials. Most woodwind instrument reeds are made from cane, but there are synthetic reeds for clarinet, saxophone, double reed instruments, and bagpipes. Synthetic reeds are more durable and do not need to be moistened prior to playing, but many players consider them to have inferior tone.

I've played the flute since 6th grade back in 1968/69. The first song I played with the marching Band was California Dreaming by the Mommas and The Pappas.
I attempted to play the clarinet when I was 13. The pet dog would howl loudly every time I practiced. 😂
I always wanted to play the French horn, but my mom liked the price of the flute and so that's what I got when band started. We had an accordion 🪗 that my older sisters played but band didn't have any place for it or I probably wouldn't have gotten the flute either.

Jeremy definitely has a good sentence of picking out the greatest people in his life and keeping them as I watch the AA last night I say a few things but nobody ever sees it but I always say Jeremy has motivated obscure people in his life and I think that is the most precious thing anybody could ever give you guys are some lucky lucky lucky lucky young couple still would love to know when you're getting married God how I would love to do your makeup and hair and photographs just say I used to be a wedding planner did great for 35 years my own business. Reeds are made of bamboo. You have to lick the reed to make it wet. If you try to play while the reed is dry, the reed is too stiff to vibrate and it will split.

I played the clarinet all through high school and so did my daughter and we don't "lick" the clarinet. You have to keep the reed moist or the clarinet will not work!

Christian you are using and saying the word smorgasbord correctly. As for why the reeds and the instruments are being licked it is so the reeds do not crack or break from drying out and they must be moist in order to give the best musical quality.
The 'special wood' is just bamboo. The same wood is used for the oboe and the saxophone (which I play). The 'licking' is to keep the reed moist. It is better for the sound.

I played the clarinet from 6th grade to graduation. You have to keep reeds wet otherwise they don't do what they're supposed to and crack and chip.
I love your stories and fun conversations! Clarinets are too squeaky, but I'm not impartial. I'm primarily a French Horn player. I went to music school so I can play just about every wind instrument. Unfortunately my GI bill ran out before I got to the Strings course. The Cello is my favorite too. My grandson is leaning to play it now.
My grandpa tried to teach me the guitar when I was young, but my hands are small, so it's just not fun. Playing the piano is difficult too. Keep practicing Christian. Music is good for your mind and Spirit. Wishing you well! Sherry P.
Anytime I play a brass instrument, my cheeks burn for hours! Now a woodwind, I'm good to go for hours. Patience, I'm tiny too and some woodwinds I had to choose mouth on the mouth piece or hands on the keys!

Christian and Patience, my friends had a yellow bull python that they would let out of its enclosure periodically. One time when I was visiting, "Rosey" (the snake) crawled up the back of the couch and used me to crawl down the other side, she stopped and licked my face several times. It was a creepy sensation. It was rather weird to have an 8 foot long snake crawling across you. I thought her skin felt like credit card plastic.

Christian got so used to going to the left side that he still goes to the left even though there are a lot of money on the right. Christian, go to a music store and ask for the beginner reed for the wind instrument you want to try. Buy a few Reeds, as you may chip or split them. I played in Jr. High and senior high. Just try!!

Hey Patience and Chri stian. I just wanted to tell you that I took 10yrs piano,4 years flute, and 3 years guitar lessons. I loved piano Christain you please very good. I found out that I had to practice hard pieces for a good 3 months, like Beethovens Fur: Eloise his original composition..it took me about 3 years of playing it constantly to get recital ready, so don't give up!! As far as the flute...I kept hyperventilating so I'd be drunk when I finished band practice..maybe that's why I liked it...the guitar I loved but I only got the basics so I could play popular music if we had a campout by the fireplace. That's all I ever wanted to do with it! So I though you may be interested in my experience!!!!

Like Christian said about how his school band had so many Clarinets , that is very typical, so did mine, at one time we had close to 20, no lie, and I was one of them. In 10th grade I was 1st chair 2nd Clarinet!! 🙂We were a very BIG band, back in the 80's! We were 120+ strong!!🙂That did not include the majoretts, the Auxiliary girls nor the flag girls. My son also played the Clarinet and he played the Oboe, self taught and was really good. That was one reed instrument that I could not play, it is very hard!! He use to make his own reeds as well. I also played the sax and the flute. I thought myself to play the sax, I use to play it in church, not in band. I also tought myself to play the flute as well. I still have my clarinet and a flute, sold my sax to a blues guy, lol & I had a trumpet, was pretty good on it, but sold it too. Once a person learns a wood/reed instrument, they can play pretty much them all. I still have all of my metals and band jacket. lol 🙂

I played the clarinet and trumpet in middle school. My fingers were and still are too small.
I was called Marlin my senior year. I kept telling the teacher I wasn't a fish the last time I wemt to the office and complained and they talked to the teacher. That's when she finally stopped. So I understand Patience completely
I played 4 different instruments in HS. When I was young, my sister played the violin. I have always wanted to learn the violin. I still remember how to play and most people don't know that it is exact same fingerings between a tenor sax and a clarinet. Patience there are a lot things that sound beautiful on a clarinet. Being able to play clarinet and tenor sax I got to play in concert season and jazz season. I've been to some awesome places to play.
