  • The Battle of the Atlantic was Canada’s longest campaign of the Second World War from September 3, 1939 to May 8, 1945. Legion Magazine and Canada’s Ultimate Story present Military Moments | Battle of the Atlantic. Narrated by Canadian musician and artist Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea, the video takes us back hours after Britain declared war on Germany on Sept. 3, 1939, when the German submarine U-30 sank the ocean liner SS Athenia.
The Battle of the Atlantic raged for 68 months. Germany’s objective was to starve Britain into submission by cutting shipping supply lines. The Allies responded with escorted oceanic convoys and the Royal Canadian Navy played a critical role, protecting convoys from the Caribbean to the United Kingdom. By 1944, Canada had proven itself as one of the world’s best U-boat hunters.

My dad served on the HMCS Dunver. She lead the largest convoy in the Atlantic, to this day no one has ever seen a convoy that large. My dad would have a sparkle in his eye when he talked about the ship. He also cried when he told some horrific stories about some of the battles. The HMCS Dunver is now sitting on the bottom of the ocean near Victoria BC as an artificial reef.
To my dad, who bravely fought in the war to keep us safe and free.
R.I.P. Frank John William Frances Dion. I love and miss you so much!

My late father served on the convoy escort destroyer HMS Vidette in the North Atlantic in 1943 and referred to the bravery of ' the wheatfiled sailors ' from all the Provinces of our staunch ally Canada.. Canada and Canadians contributed hugely to the successes against the wolfpacks and Britain and the world owes them a debt of gratitude. Long live the special relationship built out of the shared and harrowing experiences of the Battle of the Atlantic.Thank you Canada and all Canadians.

My dad was in the Battle of the Atlantic. Was on the HMCS Cheboque when it was torpedoed in 1944, caught a nice piece of shrapnel in the side. He was 18 years old, he lied about his age and was seeing action at 17 after going in at 16. Different breed of men back then.

Thank you for bringing history to life in this sensitive and enlightening video. My grandmother was a nurse escorting wounded from Europe. This video has helped our family to understand some of her experiences in WW2.

I never served, except as a RCSC, but I joined the Legion anyway. It just seemed like the right thing to do to support my beloved Canadian veterans.

It's beautiful that they're playing the hymn, "Nearer my God to Thee" in the latter half of this video. Oh that Canada would turn fully and wholeheartedly to Jesus!

I would have assumed that making such a big deal about the Narrator would prove he is great. Instead we get some dude reading a script badly. Progressives are doing to youtube what they did to the Movies and TV.

bro your looking a little too deeply into this; the fact that your willingly watching this video already says something about you. Don't start openly complaining about the narrator now
