038 - ICE BREAKING ON THE OXFORD CANAL ON OUR NARROWBOAT

- In this video it is blooming freezing again as we cruise over two days on the Oxford Canal from Claydon to Fenny Compton and then onto Napton. This part of the canal forms the peak and just before we get to Napton we start descending again. Despite the freezing weather we are blessed with beautiful sunshine to enjoy the views across the Warwickshire country side. No end of fields full of sheep and hedgerows full of pheasants which George is desperate to flush out.

There is one way if keeping warm whilst on the tiller!! Stand inside on step of backdoors with them closed behind you and have a longer tiller arm on, with the roof hatch slid back almost against you. Ensure your jacket is loose at bottom then as the warmth from within boat flows up and out it travels up through your jacket filling you with warmth!! Lovely vlog once again, omg George is one crazy dog!! Lol. Looking forward to the next, have safe travel and keep warm lol
Good plan except we have a semi trad not a trad so the tiller is a good four foot away from the doors and our arms just aren’t that long! Thanks for watching. Jo

Landlocked narrowboat is supposedly the result of farmer giving a laborer a place to stay off the canal as the Trust did not like him tied up in the canal for extended periods. I cannot verify this story but I picked it up from another vlog.
We've heard a few different versions of the story now. Rather curious which one it is. M

Hi, hope you are well. I am certainly keeling very fit with all the walking but I think George would just keep going forever. Snow is forecast tonight and while it would be pretty, I am really hoping it doesn’t happen. Jo
When I first saw the Fenny Compton "Tunnel" on a map I was curious as it didn't show it. My research indicated that it was as you said indeed a tunnel albeit not far under ground. In 1838 the Oxford Co. bought the land above it and started to open it up so there were 2 tunnels one 300m or so and the other end 400 (they opened up parts of both ends and the centre) by 1840 and it stayed that way until 1865 when it was decided to make it a cut in with the south opened in 1868 and the north in 1870. The cast iron bridge dates back to that time.

Kudos to the pair of you braving the cold. Maybe your could do a short video on layering up or what you've found does and doesn't work when taking turns at the tiller? Someone mentioned a zippo hand warmer. Bit of faff but used to have one as a labourer and it worked very well. Might get another one actually! Do an amazon affiliate link if you get one?
Congrats on your first ice break. Not quite Titanic grade but smashing non the less. I remember doing that as a teenager and the noise was truly horrific! All the blacking at the front vanished!! It was about half an inch or so think mind.
Honestly enjoying your videos so much. Very relaxing for a chap stuck at home on rest. Make more I'll even throw a couple of quid onto Patreon if your up to new challenges.

We wouldn’t be sober for long that is for sure. We are loving the winter cruising it is so quiet and really beautiful when the sun is out despite the cold.
Not sure our blacking can take too much icebreaking especially if it gets any thicker than that.

Did I her correctly? Something about George and a Pheasant? I think George is suffering from a conditions commonly call Valium Deficiency. But not to mind, I would say with in 15 years he will mellow out. Stay warm.
Yes, he flushed two out of the undergrowth before he was hauled back onto the boat in disgrace. Luckily they both got away and there was no one nearby with a gun not shoot them down. I aware this dog is six months not six years he has so much energy! I won’t hold my breath about the mellowing out though. Thanks for watching. Jo

Thanks for the tip! We mainly just film in the iPhone 6 and a GoPro for the time-lapses. They seem to do the job but are not great in low light when we are inside the boat. Thanks for the support! Jo

I'm a biker and if always got a petrol hand warmer with me , it lasts for about 6+ hours on about 2 teaspoons of Zippo fuel .
Another + for the zippo hand warmers. I have got 12hrs of HOT use from them.
As i am sure you have heard on the news, it is getting very cold with snow this weekend so wrap up warn, also i would be careful letting your dog go into fields as farmer can shoot your dog if it is on their land and bothering any animals by law. merry vlogmas :)
Yeah we have heard that, George is not interested in livestock only birds but a farmer with a gun would not know that. We do try to be careful and his recall is pretty good but when he has the sent it all goes out the window. Thanks for the warning though. The temperature is definitely dripping now. It was quite pleasant this morning but there is a bite out there now! It’s still pretty warm on board thank goodness. Jo

George is happy with a tennis ball, a full stomach and a bit of exercise! Luckily he gets that everyday! It makes us happy to watch him play! Jo
Alright how cold is it? Perhaps you might like to explore military surplus or stores for polypropylene beanies and longies or silk. Good to -40F or C. Called really cold, doubt if thin sheet of ice on canals has put you there, it's 0* or 3*C. It generally has kept me relatively happy in extreme cold with 8 feet of ice on lakes and rivers.Wool socks only. If your digits or parts are cold try "HotHands" brand Toe, back, and hand warmers, I did buy in UK once, it was an ASDA/Walmart.
Currently 6 degrees but we are due a freeze tonight. Snow is forecasted for the weekend which could make life interesting. Eek! Jo
Minimal List 6* C is what 42* F, downright toasty, might be time to lose cotton, and invest in wool hiking socks, warm boots, and perhaps toasty polypropylene or silks.
Either that or I just get nervous at -20 to -40 C/F.
If you could harness George's energy, there would be no need for solar panels!
