It's always the thoughtless few who end up causing complete closures of entire areas of historical significance and denying the VAST MAJORITY of people who know better the ability to visit. A sign should be erected stressing the "Historical Nature" of these sites and that they are under "CONSTANT VIDEO SURVEILLANCE" promising Prison time to anyone caught! One of my huge issues when these cases go to trial is that the penalties are often no more than a slap on the wrist. The penalties need to be very severe, the perps destroyed something that will NEVER be recovered. This isn't like vandalizing a car, a car can be replaced. I want to see hard prison sentences for crimes like this, more than just a few years. Taking photos of such behavior is risky, and there can be physical retaliation from the offender. From the public's perspective, is taking photos worth that risk if the courts merely slap the offender on the wrist? It often is not. Also, if someone has evidence of retaliation after reporting this kind of vandalism, why are the offenders not just taken back to jail to wait there until their trial? As a society we have to do better to protect public lands, and sadly, that starts with the Federal agencies who consistently refuse to aggressively prosecute these cases. Shame on you.
Watching other channels that also go to these places they'll never say where they're going. And this is exactly why! Because 90% of archaeological sites in the States have been vandalised. For others to go and find a little piece of pottery or some petroglyphs is amazing. And everything needs to stay exactly where you found it!
