    100% agree with metal coins! I bought the Scythe metal coins and use them for every single game that has coins - they’re generic enough thematically to not stick out like a sore thumb and the 1-3-5-10-20 denominations are great for never running out of coins with four players. Highly recommend anyone who wants to use metal coins to pick them up, the set is around $30 last time I checked :)

      i got that set for Christmas! Didn’t dawn on me to use it for other games, though!

    I get a smile every time I hear another excuse to your pronounciation of Catan. Gets me every time. Great video as always. Thank you for guiding me, a quite new hobby board player, through mazes of the board game world. Keep on doing what you do!

    I love the Ketchup Mechanism expansion. I will almost not play 7 Wonders Duel without the expansion. I always play Terraforming Mars with the Prelude expansion. To name a few of the best that I have personally.

    Another vote for Five Tribes Artisans expansion as a necessary expansion. It just adds enough stuff to make Five Tribes better. It adds some movement restrictions that are needed. It also adds some special action tiles that are really powerful and are able to make big points.

      @@NightsAroundaTable 5T has only two expansions really, the other ones are mini exp or promos. But to me Artisans of Naqala is great! And kinda breaks the name of the game since it's now Six Tribes...

    Don't forget that each Disney Villainous expansion is a smaller standalone game on its own, which I think is really important since it's marketed more to the mass market.

      Aha! i didn't realize that. It's the same case with the FunkoPop stuff, no?

    Out of the very few expansions I've tried out, I'm really into the Mystic Vale expansions Vale of the Wild and Manastorm. They make the game quite a bit more interesting for me. They're basically a bit more of the push-your-luck aspect where you take bigger risks for bigger rewards, and making the risk work out is very, very satisfying.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i've only played Mystic Vale once, and my friend has every single expansion, so i have no idea what the un-expanded game feels like. i was kinda bummed out to see the goofy jigsaw cut on those day/night pieces though. What was that all about?

  • @dasneuge9704

    Great series so far.
    In my early days of boardgames playing. I was trying to be a completionist for my talisman and Arkham horror games. It did get quite expensive and wasn't able to get everything.
    I agree for making sure the vase game is good and played with enough friends that I might want to get that expansion. Though with how little time I get to play boardgames and the amount I have. There is a chance to miss out on that one gem of an expansion because it was taken off the shelves. Just my two cents. And hope I explained that well enough.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally. The auction i mentioned in another comment had Firefly with all the expansions for 200 bucks, but some of those expansions just can’t be bought anywhere any more.

    • @dasneuge9704
      @dasneuge9704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NightsAroundaTable wow 200. Though I wonder if I spent that much when I bought all the firefly expansions when they released.
      Was it a big box with everything in?
      Also I must say the paper money they used is probably the best have seen so far.
      Also I really liked that they have a solitaire mission in that game

    Best expansion is that gigantic Cthulhu expansion you could get for CMON's Cthulhu: Death May Die...I mean, who knew Cthulhu was such a good snuggler?! Natural 'big spoon'...

    I would never play
    -Dungeon Petz without Dark Alley. It really add or simplify good but hard game.
    -Five Tribes, Artisans of Naquala is great expansion too.
    -Carcassonne with almoust all Big Box content.
    -Fresco with module which add Pink and Brown color and cards module.
    -Mystic Vale expansions

    My favourite expansion is Tiny Epic Galaxies Beyond the Black. It really improves the game tremendously. I don't tend to buy many expansions anymore because I think a game ought to be great on its own, and most expansions, in my experience, either add needless complexity or unwanted length to the game, or actually ruin the appeal of the original! Any War of the Ring expansion, for example, or (for me at least) Salsa in Concordia. Despite my lack of positive experiences with them, though, I still find expansions hard to resist.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have the same relationship with them. There are very few i feel that are worth getting, but buying an expansion feels like reaffirming that you love the base game. Beyond the Black is a solid pick though. i haven't played War of the Ring, but i hear consistently solid things about Salsa.
      There's another expansion type i guess i didn't cover: maps. So many games (Concordia, Ticket to Ride, Power Grid) just throw extra maps at you.

    • @carlatate7678
      @carlatate7678 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NightsAroundaTable I am in the minority with salsa. I just don't like the addition of a wild resource. But I will buy every map that comes out. I think concordia maps are beautiful.
