I absolutely adore this trilogy, even though I kind of start the video with my biggest complaints about it (and about some character decisions). Definitely a trilogy worth putting the time into as the positives outweigh the negatives. There are SPOILERS in this video (obviously) but also be careful for SPOILERS regarding Voltron: Legendary Defender and Throne of Glass. I promise both of those are relevant when I talk about them in this video.
Have you read these books? Let me know your thoughts regarding my biggest disappointments and also, how did you react to THAT reveal? Still reeling and I finished these almost a month ago at this point!

If an author can make you care that much about secondary characters that don't get satisfying arcs, I'd call it a sign that they are an excellent writer. 😉 And I very much agree with that assessment, by the way. I love Tad Williams' work, and these are some of my favorite books.

Yes absolutely! Even with the disappointments I still walked out of the books feeling really good about having read them and they've stuck around with me really well. I still think about them frequently and am looking forward to reading the second Osten Ard set series!

I really enjoyed your review, and I agree with you about Maewyn. My only complaint is how did you not mention the best character: Binabik? Anyways, good video.

I felt the same after reading the book. There was so much build-up for some characters and I felt that they either died or just simply stop. Maegwin was a huge blow because her mind was lost and she tried so hard to save her people. I was okay with her dying but I think she could have regained her sanity to at least talk with Eolair one last time. Also, Gutwulf I think had a poor end. Sacrificing himself while fighting Inch would have been a nice send-off (but then again he wouldn't have found bright-nail).
However, I was satisfied with Isorn being honored. Rachel reunion. Pyrates getting absolutely humiliated by the storm king. Simon's heritage reveal was most satisfying because Isgrimmur focuses on Simon's achievements throughout the books and I really needed that for my boy. He starts off super boring and by the end he is recognized for his battles and badassery.
The book was boring at times, but for the most part, I enjoyed it. Definitely better to hear the audiobook.

I also loved the reveal of Camaris as well. Never saw it coming, and the idea of this great unbeatable hero resurrected from the past was genius. I really wanted him to absolutely humiliate Aspitis in their fight though.
When I was reading the ending, I was fully expecting for Simon to be the big hero. He's finally got the famous sword from the famed King John, and I was ready for him to find some superhuman strength or abilities and triumph in the end. Then, the slow realization that everything he and the members of the Scroll worked for was a lie. It was like a horror movie, realizing that there was absolutely nothing anybody could do to stop Pyrates. The main character who we saw grow for 3 books was helpless, as well as Camaris. I felt terrified just reading it.
My favorite part of the series was Simon learning his lineage. Specifically, seeing the Fisher King leave his family and fight the dragon. He did kill it, but he was defeated too. King John, the revered, noble, and wise man was revealed to be a fraud. The scene of him taking credit for the death of the dragon and stealing the sword was great. There were small details that pointed us in this direction, but I never connected the dots. Perhaps it could have been sooner, but I like that he didn't find out before he was mature.
One thing I didn't like about the series was how unknowledgeable we were about the Sithi's powers. Their final battle with the Queen was confusing, and they seemed to be pretty weak. I'm not asking for a full explanation of their powers, but it always seemed like the Norns were superior in every fight between them. For example, in the second fight for Naglimund, why didn't the SIthi know about the hallucinogenic powder? And their solution was to have the soldiers put vaseline on their face? Not some sort of advanced magic or trick of their own?

Camaris-Sá-Vinitta is the true Barristan Selmy. I still get chills from Isgrimnur's revelation that, at 80, he has lost none of his power or skill. That scene where he helps the little noble boy restore and polish the ancient armor is so, so good. Williams is a genius.

This is my second favorite fantasy series. I believe it is highly underappreciated. The construction of the plot, characters, world, and particularly conclusion are sooooo good.
Your 'stuck the landing' remark near the end of the video is exactly how I feel.

Definitely one of my new go-to fantasy series and I'm so sad I hadn't read it earlier. I'm looking forward to reading The Witchwood Crown!

@@theteapotreads I read it between parts 1 and 2 of To Green Angle Tower. It’s ok. It’s only his debut novel. I’m gonna look into the rest of his bibliography next year.

I read this book as a teenager (26 years ago) and just read the series again. I had forgotten about Maegwyn and her death was really upsetting to me.

I do have to say that I really enjoyed this series both times I read it, but I feel that I got a lot more out of it as an adult since I am a lot more emotionally self-aware than I was back then. Simon struggles with the death of his friends and killing on the field of battle.

Maegwyn really deserved better, she was set up for such greatness it's disappointing every time I think about it. That's good to know you appreciate it more as an adult; part of me wishes I could have read it when I was younger to have that nostalgia factor but there are a lot of things (like you said, Simon struggling with the death of his friends and killing and really just growing up in general) that would have gone over my head. I think if I had been younger I would have been more annoyed with Simon, esp. in the beginning, but it's nice to be able to watch him grow up and sort of reflect on how realistic it can be

I loved this series so much, the very end was pretty unsatisfying for me, there were a couple of writing choices that annoyed me (how many times did Simon lose consciousness to end an action sequence?) and Maegwens arc was indeed very lame.
    But.
It's so good. All the creepy horror style scenes in the tunnels and darkness were amazing and something you hardly ever see in fantasy, crazy blind Guthwulf, the slow pace that actually allows us to get to know and love the characters. Chef's kiss.

LOL yes Simon was always passing out. I did adore the atmosphere, especially of the tunnels! I'm not a big fan of horror and there were so many scenes pushing my limits because of the creepy level but I loved them all the same. And ahh blind Guthwulf was one of my favorite parts to read I think that's what made his ending so disappointing for me.

I mean...Seoman is the main character, in a way every character is introduced and used to move his story forward. They are all fully formed people with wants and desires and goals...but the story is about Seoman and him realizing his heritage and taking down the Storm King.
I think the closet I came to being disappointed with a character was Camaris, for alot of reasons and poor, poor Deornoth.
As far as things that impacted me on an emotional level...Elias' whole struggle with the Storm King, not being able to sleep, drinking that horrible metallic and one quote from him that when he in his bedroom and is describing his nightmare to Pyrates in book 3. Forgive me for bastardizing it, I don't have the book Infront of me but the gist was "that horrible, dead frozen thing with the burning heart...and the dark spaces inbetween". There is something about the second part of that sentence...it hits me on a very real and raw level, like my nightmares. I could feel his terror like it was my own...it's hard to explain how this one line connected so deeply with me but it did.

And I totally get that it's all about Simon but still, for all the character building that goes into so many of them they seem to be just a flicker at the very end and then death.
Oh my yes! Elias was definitely a character I found myself enjoying, especially in book 3. He's terrible but yeah he's got so many dark and terrible things that happen to and around him.

I thought the false messenger referred to the wierd of the swords-aka Nisses being the false messenger?
