Trying Holbein Cake Colours, the most vibrant & hard to find gansai paints

- Hi everyone, so it happens I bring you another video in my constant saga to find unique not easily available Japanese art supplies for a reasonable price.
In today’s video I’m very excitedly sharing Holbein Cake Color for Sumi painting.
I haven’t found a lot of info out there about these and barely any swatching video or photos, so I decided to make my own.
Despite me repeatedly saying the wrong thing in video (oops), this is a 28 colour set including two metallic colours and they are very vibrant. These yummy paints come in a beautiful wooden box and best of all, I found them for a really good price! (Considering eBay prices for sets with less colours without the box).
I got them from this lovely shop in Japan, they have lots of interesting stuff and the shipping cost is quite reasonable:

Lovely set. I have occasionally seen sets like this, but unable to purchase at the time. I would love to have this set! thanksfor the nice review,it was good see how they handle too. The box is lovely too…

The store you recommended is beautiful! But does not ship to the US….so had to order it elsewhere.

Hi carol……I love the vibrancy of these paints…..would you say they are more like gouache than watercolor? thank you so much!
Hi Lynn, they are more opaque than watercolours but not as covering as gouache if that makes sense. I think they are possibly like Gansai, which people call Japanese watercolours, but quite different from western watercolours.

You’re welcome ☺️ To be fair I don’t think 20 USD is a bad fee for shipping from Japan, more so if they’re using FedEx. I paid less than that, but I had to pay import fees so in the end they’d probably come at a cheaper price to you 😉

Q. are these paints non toxic?
Thanks! I cannot say for sure they’re non toxic, but I assume they have the same level of toxicity of watercolours which is relatively low compared to other mediums.

It's interesting how they look very pastel in the pans but are so saturated on paper.
Yes, the looks can be deceiving in this case 😉
