    0:56 - As you can tell from the shot of Lana Turner's stunning dress, colour orthicon cameras were used in this broadcast because you don't see the "comet tails" which would be used on the new tube cameras the following year.

    The Oscars of today need to have a lesson or two about this. And that is to keep the acceptance speeches short and to the point; and no griping about political and social issues either.

    I must say Lana looked so much older than 46 here. Perhaps after a tumultuous decade.... Still this was her last appearance as a presenter.

      Thought she still looked radiant in mid 40s. Always looked great in clothes on or off screen. Bad match with Garner. Lana worthy of solo appearance.

    Wow. Wow. Wow. I was too young to remember this but heard from elders in the family that Elke and Connie for into a cat fight! Watching it now, it shows both gals acted with class and dignity toward each other. And with Jim, Lana, and Kathryn? You can't get classier than that!

    lana still looked classy and svelte. she looked 46 for those years but bad teaming with Garner. Lana was a major star who should have presented solo.

      +manny wolf They almost always had two presenters per category back then except for the acting awards. The inane prattle between them is something nobody misses in today's Oscars.

      +TheTerryE Poor Bob. He was a true MASTER of ceremonies. The jokes didn't always work, often they did, but he was a classy tradition who once made the Oscars something to anticipate. I've been watching them for fifty yrs now and other than Billy Crystal, nobody has ever equaled him in that job.

      +TheTerryE The academy, and probably the network (ABC) as well, preferred stars to accept for absentees back then as opposed to family members or obscure friends whether there actually was a legitimate relationship or not. It was a TV show, after all, and people tuned in to see big names. Nowadays, for whatever reason, winners and nominees rarely miss the ceremony so the problem doesn't exist. When it does happen, we get the standard "accept on his/her behalf" announcement which is blessedly quicker.

    Garner was nobody next to Lana. He was in the tier below Newman, Burton, Lemmon & Curtis who were all MAJOR STARS. Mcqueen seagued from TV to Major film stardom. Garner did not. By the early 70's Garner was though in movies and went back to TV.

      Hey, James did earn an Oscar nod for 1985's Murphy's Romance. A career resurrection right there! Also, he was in The Notebook!!!!

    • @selma1930

      A decent actor by any means just never an A star but many of the A's are gone and hes still here!

    • @MrImiller07
      @MrImiller07 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Garner was one of the few successful television actors who made the transition to film work in the early 60s via Wyler's The Children's Hour opposite Audrey Hepburn, and he was accepted by audiences in romantic leading roles in The Thrill Of It All opposite Doris Day and did well as the lead in Frankenheimer's Grand Prix in 66 when McQueen declined the role. His film career did taper off in the late 60s/early 70s, but he scored a hit in Support Your Local Sheriff in 69 and the sequel in 71. Of course, he was Oscar nominated for Murphy's Romance opposite Sally Field in 85, arguably his best performance.

    • @selma1930
      @selma1930 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      But never an A star. An A star makes the list of top ten box office stars which Garner just never achieved.

    • @selma1930
      @selma1930 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no rule but if you know movies and the caste system for A stars, box office popularity is weighed heavily and factors into why MAJOR stars get big bucks like Taylor & Burton in their hey day or Newman or McQueen or Streisand or Jane Fonda, & Redford all people who commanded top $ and got it as THEY were MAJOR stars who delivered at the box office.
