  • Learn differences and similarities of 2 main ways of Vipassana meditation: Goenka and Mahasi Sayadaw Vipassana (the one you can practice in Thailand, based on 4 foundations of mindfulness).
While both of this types of meditation retreats represent Vipassana, they are quite different in methods and rules. In this video, I'll go into the details and explain you Goenka and Mahasi Sayadaw Vipassana and give you my honest opinion on both of them.
I did my 10 day Vipassana meditation experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand, based on Mahasi Sayadaw teachings:

If you are really want to gain something or develop from your heart that means go to Goenka vipassana. It is no escape place. You will established the technique on you so that you can carry on rest of your life. It is for for those who really want to meditate.
Thank you for sharing your experiences which might help others. It is the same thing but the difference is how seriously you wanted. Nice to know there are places where people can go. Thank you again

Thank you! yes, these two vipassanas are just based on 2 different types of meditation. That’s all.
This doesn’t mean one is good and another is bad. It’s just different.
Actually, I went to a Thai Forest monastery two days ago and I discovered another way of meditation they practice there, that is like a mix of Goenka and Mahasi Sayadaw teachings.
Unfortunately, currently they don’t have a teacher, so I couldn’t learn much.
I don’t claim I am an expert in Vipassana, I am just very curious to learn about it and share everything that I discover.

Hope you will try to visit it once, its definitely not for beginners. I never found their ways strict but appropriate, it is Free. The environment they provide is nurturing, solitary and intense. Its definitely not for everyone. But i love it, did a 2-10 day courses looking to do more. They also have 30 & 60 day courses..

At the Goenka retreat. You only have to be in the main meditation hall afor 3 group sittings that are 1 hour each. and then after a small break for 10 minutes, you go in for more isntructions which last maybe 10-15 minutes. After this you are allowed to meditate in your room. The rest of the time, you can meditate in your room.
There are also teachers there that you can ask questions too.

The Goenka practice doesn't speak about Buddhism, actually it more or less rejects the concept of Buddhism. The teachings are about the Buddha himself. You are told to pay attention to the sensations at all times. I've done 8 Goenka retreats and I highly recommend it. It's not easy but it's amazing

Thank you for your comment! My friends who had zero experience with meditation want there.
Some of them didn’t enjoy it at all, they said it was too strict, too militar approach.
I would definitely do it later in my life to see the difference 😊

You really should do a Goenka course. It's not as strict as you point out. You are not observed all the time. You are free to meditate in your room if you prefer. You are only required to be in the hall for 3 sessions a day as well as at the discourse each evening. The separation of male and female is a good idea in my opinion. And of course if you really want or need to leave, then you can leave. Also anything less than 10 days, isn't really giving a proper chance to experience the method. Blessings from Australia. 🙏

Yes Vipassana is very strict if you straggle with Vipassana then you can try iner Engineering teach by Sadhguru Isha foundation. Shambhavi Mahamudra is awesome. You have to give only 21 minute in a day. You will blast with peace try it.

I love Sadhuru’s lectures but I’ve practiced only his 15-min meditation. Could you provide us with a link to this 21 day course please?

Well, you have provided so much misinformation about the Goenka tradition, maybe you should go and sit or go course and revise your review

I did this video based on the experience of 2 close friends of mine: one did a Goenka vipasaana in Spain and he said it was a great experience yet he would not do it again; and another one did it twice: once in Germany, and another time in Switzerland and she will go again and again.
They both told me it was hard and not for everyone, and also they provided me with details I shared.
Anyways, yes Goenka is on my list.
But tomorrow I’m going to do Mahasi Sayadaw Vipassana again as I am in Thailand and I want to hear teachings from a buddhist monk.

@@IKIYOGA I’ve never done a Mahasi course but I know they practice differently so when you sit a Goenkagyi course make sure you don’t mix the techniques it’s very important to keep them separate partly because of respect to the 2 different teachers but you don’t want to get confused on the course and not understand the benefits each has to offer. Mahasi used noting to concentrate the mind and in doing so uses the conscious mind, like hearing hearing or thinking thinking these are products of the conscious mind, whereas Goenkagyi uses the breath with is connected to the conscious and subconscious mind, so straight away you are working with the subconscious mind, so it’s very important to follow Goenkagyis instruction to the letter and go as deep as possible.. All the best wishes to you
