Near, the developer of bsnes, recently took their own life after enduring years of cyberbullying. As ugly and hate filled as the internet can be at times, there's nothing anyone can do to diminish Near's achievements or their immense contributions to video game emulation. Near not only developed bsnes+Higan but also helped to advance other emulators, like Snes9x, and invented the bps patching format used by some of the mods in this video. I recommend reading this piece (penned by Near) to better appreciate the extent of their talent and commitment: arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/06/how-snes-emulators-got-a-few-pixels-from-complete-perfection/

Emulators are just for pirates who want to play old games that companies either won't sell anymore or can't sell. All emulators should be shut down. We don't need old games, I'm fine with the PS5 and the 3 games it currently has. We have literally never learnt anything from older games and most old games don't even have cool contemporary features like micro-transactions, always on DRM for single player content and day one patches that allow the game to be released broken, and then fixed later.

All this makes me wish Nintendo would just step up with their emulation. I'm playing Metroid Fusion on the Wii U right now, and GBA games, while done well gameplay-wise on the system, are really lacking in visual options. There's something satisfying about playing these games on Nintendo's own hardware, so it's a true shame that the company's negligence has led to their hardware no longer being the best way to experience their games.
Honestly if I were Nintendo I'd just hire some of the more talented emulator developers and create an entire department just dedicated to getting legacy content working on Nintendo's modern hardware with as many options and features as possible. That way Nintendo can leave their legacy content to those who are passionate about working with it, and let their current development teams work on current games.

1:20 An accurate depiction of Nerrel? You make the call!
Honestly, the whole subject of emulation is meant to be argued as morally gray only because game companies want us to feel guilt for piracy... except, sometimes, piracy is our only option. Game preservation wasn't and will never be a priority for companies for monetary reasons, which explains why fewer and fewer games are made available for "backwards compatibility" as years go on. Although there will be those who use bullet points like "only a small percentage of users will ever use it" or "people prefer the latest and greatest", progress often requires looking back in order to look ahead, as some of the decisions we've made on what makes a video game "great" have resulted in worse experiences, both for the player and for the developer (unless you're an executive).

Emulators are such a big aspect of my gaming life. There are so many games I would never of played if it wasn't for emulators.

Game consoles are rare and expensive to buy where I live, no doubt I'd be playing some dumb third-person shooter battle royale mobile game like all my friends if emulators weren't a thing.
