As a Brazilian, I think that Brazilians saying "it's two different languages" is just complete ignorance. It's not and it's not going to be, specially now that Internet has been exposing us to each other much more. Any Brazilian could understand what the Portuguese woman said, and when we don't, it's a matter of accent or some different vocabulary, which doesn't require much to understand in context or explaining.
