10 Watts CW to France! Holy Cow! A QRP walk in the woods

  • I returned to our local river walk, the Bosque to try a little CW (Morse Code) and enjoy the Fall colors. Little did I know my little KX2 and Buddistick would get me all the way for France!. That KX2 is just an amazing radio, taking that faraway signal and
    making it sound like it was right next door!

I've been working all over europe with an EFHW piece of wire for 80 and 40.. the wire was free.. and my Michigan Cacti vertical, also a free DIY antenna. On the EFHW i always, always use my multi-tap UNUN. Almost never an SWR over 1.3 to 1.5, no tuner needed with the EFHW and UNUN. I posted a bunch of it if you or anyone wants to see. A few days ago I put up a 40m EFHW only TWO FEET high! And I worked an LZ3, an OM7, etc. I was shocked. lol. 73 OM

    Nicely done! His spacing is normal, by the way; Bert has an excellent fist (he's quite well known, lots of us have him in the log). If you aren't doing so now, listen to the code practice transmissions of W1AW to get a proper feel for spacing, and you will see what I mean.
    Your own fist is quite good. Very easy to copy. You have one quirk: whenever you send an "S", you tend to run it into the next character. We all develop little idiosyncrasies like that. It's just a habit, you can break it.
    If you stick with CW, you will start to copy in your head. When you aren't trying to write everything down, you can just take notes about important points, info for the log, or something you want to comment on when it's your turn. Eventually, you will start to copy whole words in your head. I can't tell you how to start doing that, it just comes organically from practice, but everyone starts doing it eventually if they stick with it. At that point, CW becomes more like conversation, and you will stop getting lost in ragchews.
    Sick with it, have fun, and call if you hear me - I will QRS. 73, Dan, WB5YUZ

      Timing was my main problem too. I wrote myself some software that threw sequences at me that I had to key... it recorded all the key-on and key-off durations and graphed them in two histograms. One was showing only the "mark" lengths, the other was showing the "space" lengths. This allowed me to focus on one thing at a time ...
      1. First, just get two distinct peaks in the graph called "Mark"
      2. Then work on getting the 'Dot' and 'Dash' peaks centered on the guides (proper ratio).
      3. Work on getting the peaks as narrow as possible (minimise variance)
      4. Repeat with the second graph, called "Spacing"
      5. Get the 'Symbol' and 'Word' peaks centered in the right place for the speed I'm sending
      6. Work on getting the peaks as narrow as possible
      This got my variance down till I sounded less organic, and a little more like a cheap auto-key.
      The computer would calculate and draw vertical guide lines on the graphs, that best fit the timing ratio. This way it didn't dictate speed, but ratio! - so I was never slow or fast, I was always 'wide' or 'narrow' of the proper timing... so, it measured ratio skew, rather than try to enforce a timing.
      With my mark and space ratios getting better I added a WPM graph that auto-ranged. It allowed me to monitor any drift in my speed.
      This last part turned out to be very important.
      I hadn't noticed till it was graphed... but, previously, whenever I slowed down, the marks would slow but the spacing would not. By graphing both characteristics I quickly got better timing at various speeds. It taught me to send in different speeds without losing my timing
      So, with those three graphs attached to my key, I managed to get my sending consistency to a fairly high level.
      I don't need the graphs anymore, but I leave them connected whenever I CW from my shack. A couple of years ago I switched to an audio input for the analysis, instead of being wired to the key.... it was nice to be able to analyse the sending stations timing too.
      There are several people I chat to who I can almost identify just from their curious habits : )

    There's a great CW app for iPhone that's free. It's a little awkward at first, but once you get it setup to auto decode, it does as well as fldigi or any other computer based program, and all you have to do is hold your iPhone mic towards the radio, or set it near by. The app is called VBC. Valiance Backbone for CW. It looks like some bizarre Japanese anime thing, but I use it while practicing CW, and just setting it near the netbook while watching this video, it was spot on.

    • @redman840

      If you take the time to learn CW,why would you need a decoder, unless they are sending at lightning speed?

    • @paaao
      @paaao 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      redman840, why use a calculator if you can just take the time to learn math? I think you know the answer... Because it's easier, and time is money. 'Hey honey, I can't watch the kids tonight while you cook dinner, I'm busy learning morse code..' Yeah.... To each their own.

    • @redman840
      @redman840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      p a Now that I have your attention...CW is an international language to be learned.Once you learn the alphabet,0-9,and a bit of punctuation,it becomes second nature. It appears you want somebody to teach it to you, though, without sacrificing,or taking the time to learn it yourself. If I can become “fluent” in Morse Code,so can you.Try LCWO.net and get started.Give 15-30 minutes of your time a day,and you will master it.It’s not easy to learn, but not impossible, either.Rest assured,I am trying to motivate you,not be critical. When do you plan on beginning? You’ll thank me,rather than challenge me once you learn. All the best & 73 to you.

      @@redman840, You're preaching to the choir. I've learned CW. My post was to enlighten people, who are interested, about a rare app for the iphone that helps with decoding when starting out. Thanks for hijacking it, and turning it into some weird rant about the holiness of the CW art form.

    Hello man. I found your video in my youtube recommendation.
    I actually don't understand Morse, but I love to listen it :D
    Moreover, I don't understand perfecty what did you write. Is it in abridged to send it more easily ?
    Maybe one time, I will build a small radio with a 433Mhz antenna and an Arduino or a Raspberry card.
    The range of the signal will be really low, but it will be good for RC or to talk in morse at the home.

    *You are running your OS in Los and your AS in Lunas together* Also you know you are not supposed to use paddles when making an SKCC contact, right? Lastly 10 watts is not generally considered QRP. Nice job though.

      Alternative3d I have not, but I know that it is a great radio as I know some folks who have one. For me, I chose the KX2 because of the available internal tuner, that's just one less thing I have to carry around with me. Thanks for watching!
