So, when I was finishing my bachelor's degree, we had to write a paper for a business class. As is standard in business talk, everyone talked about "widgets" when discussing what hypothetical companies produced. In my paper, those hypothetical companies produced self-sealing stem bolts. My teacher was a Trekkie and was highly impressed.
It's so funny watching the fake fans of this channel get called out. They'd love it if they could pressure Steve into not sharing his political views, but they don't know who they're dealing with.
@@ricardobimblesticks1489 Well, as far as they're concerned, their political outlook isn't "politics". It's only "politics" when it's something they disagree with.
Wind him up and watch he go! Other people's opinions are just as important as yours. Why aren't you giving them equal time? FAKE NEWS Star Trek isn't real why are you taking it so seriously? NEERD!! We have to do something about all the aliens in Star Trek. Build a wall and make the vulcans pay for it. Go Steve Go!
I think that's entirely the wrong response. I WANT conservative Trek fans to watch his videos, and I wish Steve would ask them to listen to his opinions and think about what Trek is trying to get across rather than pushing them away.
4:08 - I mean, Nog basically broke the Kobayashi Maru by trying to negotiate with the opposing forces, using his Ferengi wits/senses. I'd personally consider that winning. Also, now I want to 3D print a self-sealing stem bolt... I'm not sure about other people, but I've always thought of April 5th as being "Star Trek Day", which is also known as "First Contact Day". I may be slightly biased as that is also my birthday. I'll be 76 on April 5th 2063.
you've taken this too seriously, may the 4th has been blown out of proportion by disney not the day to day average SW fan. may the force be with you. i'd also like to live long and prosper.
The DS9 continuity is one of the reasons it is so easy to binge watch. It is like watching home movies almost. They rarely forget their own history, and they never do anything that doesn’t matter.
As someone used to be very strong conservative I want to thank you for sharing your political views in the videos it helps open my eyes and helped me understand star trek and more importantly politics more , star trek helps us look within ourselves even our views and realize the error in some of those views, so keep it up
Your opinions are what make these videos. They are well-articulated and thoughtful, as well as frequently being pretty damn funny. Even when I don't agree with you, I love hearing you.
I like to think self-sealing stem bolts are actually just headless bolts that expand to be flush on both sides. Maybe it's such simple technology that Startrek era people get confused.
In the "Spirit" of Halloween, I'd love to see a top 10 list of best and laziest alien costume designs in Star Trek (Non-Kelvin) Great Job on the channel, I'm a big fan!
As long as you exclude the aliens who have literally no effort e.g. the Ligurians or the Edo. Or do you mean to include that? I suppose it is the definition of lazy.
I am cackling to myself like an evil witch. For what it's worth, though, I love both franchises and feel like they're more complementary than competitive. Also someone with the comics or television rights should make a crossover at some point, damnit.
Same here. I had Yoda pajamas when I was a toddler. I love Star Wars. And yeah, it is a little surprising that no one has ever worked out a deal to at least do a comics crossover between Trek and Wars. I mean, if DC and Marvel could work something out, why not DC and Lucasfilm? Or ViacomCBS and Disney, nowadays?
Emma MacFarlane, me too. I really love speculative fiction, which totally is a continuum. I never understood putting them against each other, or having to choose. Why limit stuff?
They aren't mutually exclusive, after all - Star Trek mostly happens 300ish years in the future and never leaves our galaxy, Star Wars happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. There's no territory dispute.
when I was a kid, I got made fun of a lot, and I felt a lot of the reason was that I was a nerd. at some point, I got it into my head that since nerds were made fun of by everyone else, *logically* they must stick together no matter what their special interest was. We're stronger together, after all. I soon learned otherwise, when my Star Wars-obsessed dad shot me down when I wanted to see Star Trek. I didn't get over my shame over that until I was an adult. When I finally did see Star Trek, I loved it. I still like Star Wars, though; not only did I grow up with it, but I happily did so, because I still enjoyed the franchise. Just not as much as I like the Star Trek one now. It's time nerds stop fighting over which is better and unite over their love of speculative fiction.
Another interpretation of Geordi and Data not becoming full Commanders: - Georgi started the show as a Lieutenant J.G., and didn't become a Lt. Commander until season 3. So he is still a relatively new Lt. Commander and maybe there's some time-in-rank requirement, or like you say he just wanted some experience under the belt as a department head before moving on. - Data obviously has been Lt. Commander since the beginning of the series, and surely has the skills necessary to pass the bridge officers' test if he wanted. But then again, he probably figures he doesn't want to zoom up the ranks as an uber-officer so is happy to take his time, figuring he might be in Starfleet for centuries (we know better, but he didn't). Edit: Also, obligatory agree-to-disagree on the Last Jedi :)
The way I always interpreted it is that the bridge officer's test is not related to rank. One would have to pass the test in order to be able to be given command of the bridge, and one could take this test at pretty much any rank (maybe not ensign). Like when they might leave a lieutenant (like Worf) in command of the bridge I would assume that they had passed this test (or else they couldn't be put in charge). In the military one *must* have the proper training. Edit: It also might be that the bridge officer's test is specifically for the medics and counsillors and such, and for the more soldiery types (like security and tactical) it might be part of their academy training. And in regards to Councillor Troi's rank, it might be the case that the ranks work a bit differently for medical personnel, scientists, counsillors and engineers than they do for the soldiers. At least that's how it works in the real military, a doctor with a rank of captain doesn't necessarily have training for command, and thus cannot be stationed in a position they do not have training for, but they're a captain regardless.
With Data, I always assumed there was a bit of "racism" going on. Like that Lt Commander that tried to ask for a transfer rather than be his XO. He's likely not the only one who doesn't think a machine should be giving the orders.
@@KGillis I could see that. After all it wasn't all that long since the ruling in Measure of a Man. People might still be wary/prejudiced about promoting Data. My thinking is Data doesn't want to move up in the ranks because he 'feels' like he still has a lot to learn about people since he doesn't understand emotion very well. There are times in command positions where being emotionless is great, but you still need some emotion when it comes to decisions and resolving disputes.
Data does say you spend a dozen years in the LT grades. So 4 years in each grade, 3 years as an ensign. So the earlies you could see commander would be 15 years in, if you did everything right. Seems will may have been fast tracked.
Okay, I don't mean to be difficult but there's no way in Klingon hell that Starfleet would actually have named a ship -- any ship -- Columbia. Granted it wasn't as permeated into the zeitgeist as it is today but I think that you would agree and appreciate that naming a ship in honor of a man responsible for North American genocide just wouldn't "fly" in the 22nd century, regardless of the fact that there happened to be a much older Earth spacecraft so named.
Dude, keep your politics in your videos. I love trek, and I'm a human person with a brain...all of the time I enjoy your videos and your take on trek, especially when you bring in politics.
I’ve only been subbed for about a year or so, and it still amazes me that there are people that still comment about Steve’s politics being in the way. In that year or so I’ve heard him mention that he isn’t going to keep his political views out of the videos, are these people not paying attention?
I really hate how people who hate TLJ have to insist that no one else likes it either. The arrogance that if they don't like something no one else can like it either is staggering!
Same here. I don't get it - I know Star Wars is important to many people and can feel almost personal, but it's OK to like things others don't, or vice versa. I like TLJ alright. I think most criticisms of it are overblown, but I do have a few gripes of my own. Overall, it's a good, serviceable movie. A solid 8/10. But I'm not particularly angry that people love it so much more than I do. It's cool, they connected with it on a level I failed to. I'm not angry at people who hate it, either - "their" Star Wars is different than mine, and that's fine. I hate the prequel trilogy, but I don't need to go out of my way to convince many people who enjoyed it that it's crap. I'll happily discuss the movies, but my intention is not to spoil someone else's fun, like hating those movies is some kind of accomplishment or badge of honor.
This is true for so many things. Everytime i read "Everyone knows Dark Souls 2 is inferior" i get sad and think, dude why can't you let me like it? Hate isn't making anything better. And not letting others love things that don't hurt you or anyone in any way is just a twisted way of hating.
I agree, mostly. TLJ is my least favorite movie in the star wars fanchise, but I can understand why other like it, and that's okay by me. I think the ideas behind the character arcs are good, and like that they put female characters in prominent combat and leadership roles; it's the execution where it falls apart. most of the plotholes and idiot moments could be fixed with a single line of dialogue. (for example, if Holdo had said that the only way the First Order could know where they are is if somebody aboard sent them the coordinates, suddenly she looks like an experienced officer who have had to deal with turncoats in the past and is making a reasonable decision in keeping all information to a need-know basis.) EDIT: And by "least favorite" I mean that the other were better, not that it's bad. TLJ is an okay movie, the others are good or great.
If you really want to irritate those people, tell them you like Solo: A Star Wars Story. It was a great film, but had a lackluster performance commercially because Infinity War hadn't stopped its explosion that started a month earlier.
Steve, thank-you for sharing my share. I think that fandom's like Star Trek, and your channel, help us to acknowledge our mistakes and to be better as We Boldly Go.
The Last Jedi was by far the BEST of the new trilogy. I hate that The Rise of Skywalker came along and just took a steaming dump on it. Ret-conned pretty much all the good things about The Last Jedi. I don’t remember walking out of a movie theater that disappointed before.
Maybe we should start doing that shit back to them. "I agree that _Atlas Shrugged_ is a great book*, but I just wish you wouldn't get so *POLITICAL* about it." *: _vomits_
Which of these three dates would make a good Star Trek Day: April 5: The date Vulcans *OFFICIALLY* made First Contact with humanity. Or August 12: The date the Federation Charter was signed. Or September 8: The anniversary of the premiere of The Man Trap in 1966.
In countries which write dates with the day first (and the military even in the one country that doesn’t!), the logical date for Star Trek day would be the 17th of January: 17/01, the registration number of the Enterprise!
When you mentioned how great DS9 was, I remembered a work conversation where a couple of colleagues were discussing Star Trek, the hadn't realised I was also a fan, so the invited me to join the conversation by asking "Kirk or Picard?" I replied "Sisko!"
To answer a question that you asked in the video: I am subscribed to you on all three of my channels. All three of those subscriptions have the bell pressed. I still do not get any notifications. I'm just now getting this video recommended to me, in the recommended feed of a gaming video.
So weird. My TH-cam analytics tell me that I've been getting recommended more often because some of my recent videos have gotten more views, but as to why you wouldn't be getting notifications, or why this video would be recommended next to a gaming video? No idea.
I think that I should inform you Mr. Shives thar for me, and in history, 04 May is the anniversary of the creation of the Royal Canadian Navy. Also, people might follow the Jedi faith, but many people actually speak Klingon.
When it comes to sci-fi religion. I wanted to share a wonderful memory of mine, I had a spirited debate with my son Kevin one Christmas morning as to which series was more religious Star Trek DS9 or Bab5. I took the DS9 side and Bab5 was championed by Kevin. We debated number of religions and fully fleshed out religions that were spotlighted. I believe DS9 did a better job which is ironic considering the Gene Roddenberry didn't think religion was all that important in the Star Trek universe. I would love to know your thoughts on this debate.
I think Babylon 5 did it better. It showed the important that people put on their religion, but ultimately, it did not make any religion out to be true whereas the bajoran religion seems to have some basis in truth
The problem I have is that the vast majority of races never express any sort of religion, and often when religion does get expressed, like with the Vulcans or the Bajorans, it is in the context of that religion involving physically real, tangible, provable supernatural phenomena, like soul-transference or temporally irregular ephemeral aliens with godlike omniscience. It's never within the context of what religion actually means to our terrestrial existence on earth. Whereas Babylon 5 gives a whole gamut of religious perspectives, from Delenn who deals with actual supernatural phenomena and has one of those religions involving ancient alien interference, but also engages in theocratic institutions, to G'kar, whose old religious texts document actual historical occurrences, but himself becomes a sort of messiah among his people, to Londo who is much more passive in his acknowledgement of his own religion which only seems to matter during the holidays. B5 even has demonstrations of human religion, from Ivanova's own personal experience to a baptist sermon that Sheridan attends. You know the one.
@@SiriusMined “There are 49 gods in our pantheon, Vir. To tell you the truth, I never believed in any of them. But if only one of them exists, then god sings with that voice.”
The only case I know of of someone getting arrested for a rape they did not commit happened because the police didn't take the case seriously and where careless with collecting evidence.
I always thought the Bridge Officers Test was one of those things you had to have taken in order to become a full Commander but you could take it at any time; and Troi just left it until the last minute.
This is my fourth episode I’ve watched. I really enjoy these videos. I love the humor and insight. Overall I give it a 10/10. But when he called out all the Ronnie’s of the world... I was like damn! He just turned it up to 11!! 👍
Jonathan Buff something tells me that if Steve was simpatico with Trump and the GOP and said as much, Ronnie wouldn’t be complaining about Steve being “too political”.
Steve, I have never understood the whole Star Trek vs Star Wars thing. One is Science Fiction and the other is Fantasy. Does that mean I can't like both ice cream and pizza?
In reference to the question about Troi's promotion, in the real world, different military MOS's (jobs) have different promotions requirements, so it's possible that the career tracks in Starfleet are the same. Thus, a medical officer (Troi) could make Commander years before an engineering officer (Geordi)....it may however, be more difficult/impossible for her to get command of a ship.
I'm with you devildham. In support of your point, Dr. Crusher actually makes reference to her position being outside the chain of command in the pilot when she and Riker are at Farpoint Station. Therefore she probably needed to take the Bridge Officer's exam in order to be eligible to serve in a capacity outside of her medical duties. It makes sense that once Troi takes the exam, she becomes fully integrated into the basic chain of command even though her primary duties remain as Ship's Counselor. I don't know if anyone was really thinking about it, but in her department, she has no superior beyond Picard, just like Dr. Crusher. There is room for three commanders: First Officer, Chief Medic, Counselor because they don't compete for authority. God knows I would have hated to serve on the Enterprise-A under Captain Kirk, Captain Spock, and Captain Scott.
Steve, how do you feel about Stargate SG-1? They had some really good episodes that dealt with stereotypes and consequences of mindsets of one type or another.
When the first Star Wars movies were made in the 1970s and 1980s, I don't think anyone would have thought "Rebels fighting against a Fascist Empire" is highly political. "Fascism is bad" seemed like it was a long-settled argument. Everything changed when a third of the country decided that fascism was actually cool with them.
Star Wars Day is May the 4th. International Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19. International Strike Like a Ninja Day is, well, you won't find out until it's too late.
My mom did a Star Trek play at a few conventions in the 90s, set in the far future where people were recreating famous historical figures like Captain James T Kirk, HP Lovecraft and William Shatner (most known for his portrayal of TJ Hooker) were recreated with advanced technology for historical nerds at a convention, who end up getting involved in investigating murders and saving the day.
I'm with you on The Last Jedi. Not a perfect movie, but still a great movie. The rabid hate-dom that's sprung up around it may be my least favourite thing the internet has produced in recent memory.
Hey Steve, about the Enterprise (OV-101)... it was originally slated to be modified as a fully functional orbiter after Columbia (OV-102) was completed and tested. However design changes made this too expensive of a task to complete and a structural test article, STA-099 was converted instead into Challenger (OV-099). Then you are correct that Enterprise was again considered for conversion after Challenger was lost but Endeavour (OV-105) was built from structural spares instead built during Discovery and Atlantis (OV-103 & OV-104 respectively) which again was the cheaper option. Enterprise was also used by the accident investigation board to simulate the damage Columbia sustained that caused it's destruction. So glad I was able to mention all the shuttles in one post. Really enjoy your Trek videos as well, can't wait for the next one. EDIT: Also if I'm not mistaken the other two NX-Class ships (NX-03 & NX-04) were to be named Discovery and Atlantis. I wonder if the NX-05 and NX-06 would have also been named Endeavour and Challenger. That's just my headcannon though.
best payoff ever for self sealing stem bolts is when Bashir almost got himself vaporized trying to escape the Jem'Hadar prison and dryly tells the prison guard their tool is "either a self-sealing stem bolt or a reverse-ratcheting router"
April 5th is celebrated in my home to appreciate the beautiful influences of star trek. We listen to Steppenwolf, debate whether Q would be a deity to the simple minded, have a moment of silence for Data, and spend the day sharing the lessons trek has taught us individually and as a family. Thank you for the videos
Another note on the shuttle stuff. The Enterprise and the Challenger were both test vehicles, but the Challenger came first. Challenger was OV-099 (originally STA-099, or Structural Test Article), and was refitted into an operational shuttle, flying second (after OV-102 Columbia), but was the first shuttle built. Also probably a good idea that Enterprise never flew, considering that both the shuttle built before it (Challenger) and the shuttle built after it (Columbia) both met untimely ends, so being relegated to a museum piece may have saved the OV-101 Enterprise from a similar fate from wear, tear and cost cuts.
Thanks for sharing your TLJ thoughts. Even after all this time, it's still nice to hear someone not just degrading it... Being a woman and LGBT, Star Wars is sometimes not a "safe space" to be in. Luckily, I'm also a fan of Star Trek, so I can still have sane, calm discussions about speculative fiction. Hope you have a good Halloween!
This is a silly thing, but I wanted to thank you for helping me get my toddler to sleep at night. For a long while getting him to sleep was a super struggle. Then I started putting your Trek Actually videos on and he would calm down and fall asleep within the first couple of minutes. I think the Barclay video is his favorite. Something about your voice/videos helps to put him to sleep. I enjoy your video essays and wanted to tell you thank you from an exhausted mom!
The best part of the self-sealing stem bolts for me is that it became a running joke on _DS9_ getting peppered four or five other times over the course of the show. Eventually someone has a use for some to finish production on "reverse-ratcheting routers" for her family business. Then Dr. Bashir coyly claims that a pry bar that the Jem'hadar guards find in his cell was either a self-sealing stem blot or a reverse-ratcheting router. Love it. P.S. _Star Trek_ Day? Easy, April 5th. First Contact Day.
I was recently rewatching some episodes of Voyager and remembered the episode "Body and Soul". While maybe I'm over thinking it and misreading the episode, I feel very uncomfortable with each time The Doctor takes over Seven of Nine's body. They play it off as a "necessary evil" but I always felt like they over-looked Seven's feelings and at the end of the episode it felt like The Doctor had nothing to answer for. After a quick rewatch of key scenes it is clear to me that if they hadn't gotten the holo-emitter back that The Doctor would have abused his possession of Seven more than he already had because how would Seven conveyed her feelings? Then I remember how key The Doctor was to Seven's story line in "Retrospect" and it makes me feel straight up dirty. Their relationship was always an investigation of humanity via non-humans but it was always clear that The Doctor was seen as the superior, which only shines a light on how awful he can be. The Doctor has a clear Dominate role over Seven which hits its darkest and most controlling and most abusive in "Body and Soul". Again, maybe I'm not reading the episode right and have missed the point, but I'm going to feel dirty watching The Doctor and his interactions from now on.
if by "missed the point," you mean missed the writers' original intentions, then maybe. But that doesn't mean your interpretation isn't right. I found "Body and Soul" pretty creepy too, and the way you connect that to Seven's and the Doctor's other stories seems to nail it to me. Even if Seven was supposed to be a vehicle to explore humanity, I don't think they entirely did it the right way. They could've done better.
Yeah, it's obviously played off as hammy with Jeri Ryan getting to do her Picardo impressions, but he nevertheless seriously upsets her in the course of the episode and they have to just.. put up with it because they're in prison. He abuses the trust that she gave him in a very tense moment at the start of the episode, and it's written like she's overreacting when she calls it "abusing my body" but her digestive tract is still getting used to any kind of food, let alone cheesecake and wine. I do seem to recall the final date with... Rannick? Was with Seven's consent, because she said she'd take over and hack the ship at the right moment. But as with many events in Voyager, a lot of the reconciliation seems to take place off-camera. By the time we see the final scene, they've been back on the ship for quite a while, and potentially already talked, and Seven seems to have forgiven him. This also is something I find uncomfortable about Tom and B'Elanna's relationship - we never really see them resolve the arguments they constantly end up in. I definitely also feel uncomfortable with the Doctor being in love with Seven, and allowing that to taint their friendship and teacher-student relationship. He gets jealous, tries to curtail things, and so forth in response to perceived challenges or when she tells him he's just a friend. I almost feel as uncomfortable about it as I do Kes and Neelix, considering how young Kes is and how possessive Neelix is. In general I don't think Voyager really handles relationships, or the emotional dynamics between people, very well or often even realistically.. even the episode where B'Elanna opens up about her father's inadequacies and her childhood bullying, there is SO much shouting from Tom to B'Elanna. That's not how to be a good listener.
Steve, I love your videos on Star Trek, but completely disagree with regards to the Last Jedi! I wish you didn't ruin your videos by talking about terrible movies... Jokes! Oh well diversty is beautiful :)
The two officers we see talking about the bridge officers test are Troi and Crusher - maybe that test isnt required of folks like Data or La Forge because command training is already part of their training, while it's not a normal part of the training of doctors and counselors.
Regarding Klingons: Gowron, K'Mpek, Lursa, B'Etor, and even Kahless were all played by white folks on TNG. The main Klingons in movies I, III, and VI were played by white folks as well. I'm not sure this generalization really holds up. I never saw them as white folks or black folks; I saw them as Klingons (who, tellingly, have an established racial diversity at least as broad as our own). Anyway, given that they're under all those prosthetics, does the actors' race really matter? 🙂🖖
bro - trek's influence on world culture is bigger than Star Wars'. Mobile phones, the Internet, were both inspired by Trek. And fuck grossing films. Trek is primary a TV-based medium - it's like judging Superman or Spiderman on film success alone or the entire DC universe when comics was and still is the mainstay. SW TV series don't have anything on Trek TV series - name a Wars series with bigger ratings than ANY Trek series. And they're not prime viewing on Amazon Prime or Netflix like Discovery and Picard are.
First Contact Day is on April 5th. That could be considered Star Trek Day. September 8 could also be considered Star Trek Day because that's when TOS premiered.
29:31 The Klingons portrayed as dark skinned and violent? OK, fair point. But you cannot truly appreciate Shakespeare until you have heard him in the original Klingon. And don't get me started on Klingon opera. Klingon culture is far more nuanced than Bat'leths and Bloodwine.
Yeah, going back to the idea just before it, you're never going to get it perfect. But they did give the Klingons, even if they were often violent and stubborn and imperfect, they are very widely cultured.
I just recently found your channel and I must say, I greatly enjoy it. I love your take on one of my favorite franchises, Star Trek, and I love your political take on things. Glad I found the channel.
Star Trek Day is September 8th, which is the date of the premiere of the first episode, "The Man Trap" in 1966. Google celebrates with a doodle every year, series stars who have social media accounts will commemorate it every year, and I remember it even being celebrated by Oreo and some others.
Thank you for talking about organ donation. I have been an organ donor since I first got my license at 17. I think it’s so important, and don’t understand why people get so up in arms about it. Dude, once you die, you don’t need your organs anymore, give someone else a chance at life. What better legacy could you leave behind?
As someone who has worked with Donate Life in the past, it's important that you not only check the box for organ donation, but also that you make your wishes known to your friends and family. Depending on your local laws, family can have final say over whether your donor choice is honored.
For non-command track officers, doctors and counselors, it is easier to get promoted to higher ranks. On the bridge, Deanna would never outrank Data by virtue of him being part of the Ops , which is on the command track.
My father was a Navy Chief and he didn't want to become an officer but he made sure that I went to college before going into the Navy mself. I retired as a LCDR.
"Retrospect" is even worse when you find out that the Voyager writers had intended to do an episode about the very real concern of False Memories, a thing that led to a lot of people being falsely accused of child trafficking and occult murders in the 80s and 90s. Not only did they fail, they failed so badly that pretty much everyone who watched the episode walked away thinking it was about false rape allegations and how "b*tches be lyin'." To steal a line from SF Debris, that's like swerving a plane to avoid colliding with a flock of birds, only to smash straight into a building.
All the more unfortunate because the issue of recovered memory therapy and all the problems it caused came to a head right around the time Voyager was on the air. An episode like that, if done right, would have been one of Voyager's better ones for its timeliness alone.
I love both TLJ and Rogue One, especially when Rogue One explained why the Stormtroopers are such shitty shots when needed rather leaving it to plot armor.
Fun fact: In the first Star Wars movie, the stormtroopers are deliberately missing. Like...in a New Hope, Tarkin wants them to escape to track them back to their base.
This was a good one. I laughed. I cried (not really, but I felt and that's just as good if not as dramatic). I don't understand people complaining about talking politics in regards to fiction that is as explicitly political as Star Trek (or Star Wars for that matter) and I'm fine with the idea that it makes some people uncomfortable. They probably wouldn't feel uncomfortable if it wasn't touching a chord with them, so that's a win even if it loses subscriber. It's good to listen to you acknowledging the shortcomings of something you love. A lot of people on the interwebs seem to find near impossible to concede any failings or the legitimacy of differing readings of various works. It doesn't surprise me that there are conservatives that love the franchise, in essence most of the series tends to focus on what amount to military crews going out into their universe and propelling their ideology ahead of them. That they may not necessarily hold with the values I take from the series doesn't bother me as much as the active rejection of the discussion. I agree with you on the quality of the Last Jedi. I didn't feel much for it to be honest, I left the theater with the realization that I'm not as much of a fan as my friends. But I recognized the quality of the film and was satisfied with the way that Poe was treated - he ignored orders and was dressed down, he wasn't given information that his superiors didn't think he needed, his breach of the chain of command ultimately cost them big. I think that was appropriate, TLJ isn't ESB. They aren't a ragtag band of rebels making it up as they go along, they're an established military force that runs on discipline and following the plan. Also, I liked the recognition that people making weapons for one side were also making weapons for the other side, the light-dark scale lends itself to overly binary thinking and having multiple characters and a rich settlement playing both sides added depth that (I feel) is often missing in the universe. Anyways, keep making quality videos and I'll keep watching them. Especially the Steve and Stuffy ones, they're my favourites.
I'm a lifelong fan of Star Wars and Star Trek and I think the problem with debating which is better or holding a kind of rivalry between them is flawed as a premise - they're two very different things with very different purposes and different stories to tell. Trek is focused on an aspirational ideal of what we could be, a philosophical exploration of where we are and where we're going, with the characters acting as our lens into that world. We share their experiences, but their function is often to deliver the message of the episode. Star Wars is more of a Mythology - the lessons it wants to teach mean different things to different people and the focus is on characters interacting with each other, fate and destiny, and the journey of characters who are more specifically heroic or villainous than you'd see in Star Trek. Neither is better than the other, it's just a question of your personal preference - but stacking the two up against each other is like comparing apples and oranges. That said while I acknowledge that you're more of a Trek fan I would highly recommend you read some of the new Star Wars comics, particularly Doctor Aphra and the Darth Vader series. Vader needs no introduction, and Aphra is... well, imagine a Chaotic Neutral Lesbian Indiana Jones but in space.

It's so funny watching the fake fans of this channel get called out. They'd love it if they could pressure Steve into not sharing his political views, but they don't know who they're dealing with.
Their prime directive is to shut down ANY opposition.
@@ricardobimblesticks1489 Well, as far as they're concerned, their political outlook isn't "politics". It's only "politics" when it's something they disagree with.
Wind him up and watch he go!
Other people's opinions are just as important as yours. Why aren't you giving them equal time? FAKE NEWS
Star Trek isn't real why are you taking it so seriously? NEERD!!
We have to do something about all the aliens in Star Trek. Build a wall and make the vulcans pay for it.
Go Steve Go!
I'm just forever surprised to hear about conservative Star Trek fans.
I think that's entirely the wrong response. I WANT conservative Trek fans to watch his videos, and I wish Steve would ask them to listen to his opinions and think about what Trek is trying to get across rather than pushing them away.
If Jedi is an official religion, does that mean we can look forward to "An Athiest Watches Star Wars"?
Your response to Ronnie brought tears of joy to my eyes, a smile to my face, and contentment to my heart. Love you Steve :-)
Late to the party but get fucked Ronnie!
Legendary Music I agree if you can confuse the computer you win!
That'll be the day Kurt Cobain "killed himself" too.
Is…is that about Nog in-show canon? I don’t ever remember hearing that.
"wHeN iS sTaR tReK dAy?"
To Star Wars fans: April 5th fools! Our First Contact day was an actual EVENT in canon! Yours is a silly play on words!
you've taken this too seriously, may the 4th has been blown out of proportion by disney not the day to day average SW fan.

Let's also not forget September 8th. When Star Trek Premiered in 1966
@@surge21xx and TAS premiered in that same day!
Also St. Patrick's is often celebrated by some as sir Patrick Stewart Day.
Hey wait a minute, Star Trek does have it's own day. April 5th is First Contact Day.
ooo that's today!
The DS9 continuity is one of the reasons it is so easy to binge watch. It is like watching home movies almost. They rarely forget their own history, and they never do anything that doesn’t matter.
It's THE rabbit-hole alright.
Fiona Summers, I'd love to see that too!
Excellent idea!
Emma, dang! I love how you got Steve all worked up. cap's off to you, you too cool for skool 😎
Another interpretation of Geordi and Data not becoming full Commanders:
- Georgi started the show as a Lieutenant J.G., and didn't become a Lt.
TLJ did suck but it's all down to individual preference
(for example, if Holdo had said that the only way the First Order could know where they are is if somebody aboard sent them the coordinates, suddenly she looks like an experienced officer who have had to deal with turncoats in the past and is making a reasonable decision in keeping all information to a need-know basis.)
EDIT: And by "least favorite" I mean that the other were better, not that it's bad. TLJ is an okay movie, the others are good or great.
If you really want to irritate those people, tell them you like Solo: A Star Wars Story.
It was a great film, but had a lackluster performance commercially because Infinity War hadn't stopped its explosion that started a month earlier.
Star Trek day is Nov. 1. as in "Where Nov One has Gone Before"

wouldn't that be Enterprise Day.
The Last Jedi was by far the BEST of the new trilogy. I hate that The Rise of Skywalker came along and just took a steaming dump on it. Ret-conned pretty much all the good things about The Last Jedi. I don’t remember walking out of a movie theater that disappointed before.

And for all of the Ronnies out there, I love it when Steve brings his politics into his Star Trek videos. Keep it up, Steve!
Which of these three dates would make a good Star Trek Day:
April 5: The date Vulcans *OFFICIALLY* made First Contact with humanity.
Or August 12: The date the Federation Charter was signed.
Or September 8: The anniversary of the premiere of The Man Trap in 1966.
Oooh nailed it!
Lord Bloodraven, I forgot about August 12th. I have to add that to my calendar!
April 5. August 12 is Federation Day among all the member planets. September 8 is more like Saint Patrick's Day for Trekkies.
I forgot about Charter day
In countries which write dates with the day first (and the military even in the one country that doesn’t!), the logical date for Star Trek day would be the 17th of January: 17/01, the registration number of the Enterprise!
I know this video is old as hell, but I love your consistent middle-finger approach to people who try to tell you to leave your politics out of it.

Isn't Star Trek Day is on April 5th, First Contact Day?
When you mentioned how great DS9 was, I remembered a work conversation where a couple of colleagues were discussing Star Trek, the hadn't realised I was also a fan, so the invited me to join the conversation by asking "Kirk or Picard?"
I replied "Sisko!"
How about Janeway or Archer?
To answer a question that you asked in the video:
I am subscribed to you on all three of my channels.
A theater group in Minneapolis did a Shakespeare play, I can't remember which one in complete Klingon costume, makeup, and language!
Don't be upset, if I recall, Kiligon is a language you can learn.
@@SiriusMined both shows are great and I so enjoy both them.
You know the one.
slothfulcobra No hiding place!

@21:54 to 23:27 made my fucking day. I rolled it back and listened to it a dozen times. It was great. Thank you for that.
Do you have a video planned to review/address Short Treks? Or are you waiting until the end of season 2?
I loved THE LAST JEDI, too!!!!!!!
Looks like you hit 100k subscribers!!! Congrats my friend 🙂

Star Trek/Star Wars- can’t you love both? I do😉
I'm with you on The Last Jedi. Not a perfect movie, but still a great movie. The rabid hate-dom that's sprung up around it may be my least favourite thing the internet has produced in recent memory.
Oh no.... I started listening to the Ensign's Log a few days ago and now I cannot help but listen to Ensign Riker XD
Plus, TLJ haters are mostly angry that women had agency in it and Luke didn't slaughter people in a hallway like Vader did in Rogue One.
@@rhisands2063 A lot of the criticism against it is pretty lame. and hysterical.
@@IceWolfLoki JJ doesn't know where his "Mystery boxes" are going. He didn't "betray" Abrams, he just didn't follow a storyline that didn't exist!

This video talks about a eugenics war video, but that's not in the playlist as I've been watching that in order.
What else am I missing ??
Slightly sad that you didn't use my comment on the Nog video, but otherwise, good stuff
One thing I just realized watching this is that Trek fans now need to make the Bajoran religion an official religion.
Just got a new ID a couple weeks ago and made sure that I'm marked down as an organ donor.
This comment response sarcasm levels were off the charts. Very good.
I feel like I missed the eugenics war episode, is it not in the Trek, Actually playlist?
It is
The best part of the self-sealing stem bolts for me is that it became a running joke on _DS9_ getting peppered four or five other times over the course of the show.
I think we Trek fans are lucky to have TWO days: Star Trek Day (September 8) and First Contact Day (April 5).
Don't you love it when someone asks if you think a movie is great as if it's supposed to change your opinion of it?
bro - trek's influence on world culture is bigger than Star Wars'.
"Every day is Star Trek day" -- I love it! You are a quantum awesome TH-camr, Steve. Thanks. :)

Regarding your sports metaphor - - - "The game can't be won, it can only be played."
Steve, the first actual space shuttle is the pathfinder but it never went in space it was a prototype.
My father was a Navy Chief and he didn't want to become an officer but he made sure that I went to college before going into the Navy mself. I retired as a LCDR.
Damnit! A new Steve Shives Trek video and I have to head out for work! Oh well . . . something to look forward to later.
Wait , I watched rogue one and totally missed this explanation of why they're shitty shots . Why are they such shitty shots ?
Retcon that didn't help anything
Just FYI "self-sealing stem-bolts" is an item you can get in Star Trek Online, and I don't recall what it does but it might be a vendor trash item.
Data must have done the bridge officer test as he was made first officer in Chain of Command part 2 and often takes command of the ship. 💕 Jellico
I always thought that Chakotay was Meso American like Mayan or Olmec.
World War III is from 2026-2053.
Also, Star Trek has TWO days. September 8th and April 5th
OMG your rant about The Last Jedi was perfect, great video as always Steve
Star Trek day? Its April 5th right?
