We talk about retro games and arcade games on the channel and for YEARS now we have been showing you the best arcade games that never received home console ports...so I figured it was time to compare arcade vs home console games! Starting with Sunset Riders from Konami which released as an arcade game, a SNES game and a Sega Genesis game...all with minor to major changes to the arcade originals! So which is the best version of Sunset Riders? Let's find out!
You can play Sunset Riders on MAME and if you need a MAME Tutorial / MAME Guide stay tuned! You can also play it on MiSTer FPGA core on the MiSTer FPGA SNES core or the MiSTer FPGA Genesis core...and of course on a SNES console or Genesis console...but however you play it...you SHOULD play it! Because arcade games really are the best...IMO! and Sunset Riders is one of the best arcade games!

I'd absolutely love to see this series continue. I actually had no earthly idea that the Genesis port was so different!
As long as the first few episodes do well I will make more so this one needs to speed up haha
I played SNES in its heyday. My mother loved western movies and grabbed it for us on a whim. We loved it once we learned it was a straight forward sidescroller shooter. I played the arcade ceo in Daytona a few years back. Everyone loved the game. Obviously.
@kevincollins8620 haha good score by mom
@@VideoGameEsoterica Extremely. She had some good ones. I mean... we came home to Mortal Kombat 1 og DAY one... her and my dad playing... it was for my brother and I... we didn't even know about the game. They found the abacabb blood code for us week one! Lmao!
My Mom was Sub Zero then. Until I learned Raiden. She got us earthworm Jim, Vector man, eternal champions!!! She got some good ones nes days Home shopping network She got the original Micro machines game gold cartridge. Ps1? Had one on launch only kids in our neighborhood with one everyone even my only child spoiled best friend didn't have it for 3-4 months.
I'm trying to find the definitive version for each game, so this series is very much welcome :)
Let’s hope it does well! So far so meh
@@VideoGameEsoterica I'm pretty much present for all your content regardless, but I def +1 on this subject matter.
@@VideoGameEsoterica it’s likely to catch on.
Glad you are enjoying :)
I am hoping. Fun to make
Awesome !! Loved this !! There are lots of reasons why Ports Cannot be exact. In this case -- all three are fun !! Please -- more episodes !!
This is a really great game. A friend of mine had this game on the SNES as a kid and brought it over many times, we played this a lot and the "Bury me with my money" line was famous instantly, not alone from the fact hearing voice clips in a SNES game.
So many people have quoted the line in the comments
Certainly, it was one of the games that captivated me a lot back in the 90's.
Never got a super Nintendo port tho, but it was highly censored. There is another example, where the Indians on the Super Nintendo were completely removed while the Genesis was kept it.
Now some facts directly from the MAME history source:
In the 90s, the official Italian importer for Konami was Elettronica Videogames. Managers of the Japanese company usually visited the foreign partners, bringing a lot of new games and prototypes with them. In one of these circumstances, they brought with them the European prototype of Sunset Riders. In this version, the Mexican character was named 'Hermano' (brother). During a funny moment, trying to say something humorous, the chief technician of the Italian firm proposed: "Why not calling him Cormano?". Cormano, in fact, is the little town near Milan where the importing company was located.
Haha never heard that story. It’s a fun one
LOL Being Italian I can tell that Cormano is a bit of a meme city because of apocalyptic highway traffic queues reported everyday on the radio since the dawn of times.
Maybe they should switch to horses haha
I remember this cabinet being always so loud and colorful - loved it
It was an awesome cabinet
I can't wait for Sunset Riders to come out for the MiSTer FPGA system!! 😉
Hopefully soon!
I will watch port comparisons all day long. Plus I know you will give audio the attention it deserves, which is often sorely lacking in comparisons. Sign me up for the series!
Three more are made :) if those do well it’ll be a permanent series
Cool series idea, how about episodes on Smash TV & Sonic Blast Man? Also obligatory "Bury me with my money" quote.
Haha I have a few made. Waiting to see how the first few do before I hard commit to batching episodes
Great video, and yes I'd love to see this become a series, there's a lot of fascinating different ports and conversions of arcade games from the 80s-90s I'm sure people would love to see
I’m looking at more ideas in the future
I would love to see this series some more. Hopefully it does well enough to continue. Love the content either way, Keep up the amazing work!
I have three more made. If those do well I’ll extend it
Please do continue thus series!
It’ll get at least 3 more because they are already made :)
Would love to see more of these sort of port comparison videos. It’s always cool to see what ports were any good and their differences🤘🏻
More are coming :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Excellent👍🏻
I remember playing the SNES game on my 14'' Trinitron as a teen. Konami were never better than in the SNES/Super Famicom days.
It was their heyday. Sadly now they are pretty terrible
Awesome video! I know you mentioned that the arcade was 4-players but I would’ve called out both console ports a bit more for ditching that. It was probably because neither could handle three additional players and their projectiles all over the screen but 4P is what made the arcade more than just “Cowboy Contra.”
Looking forward to the next in the series. :)
I guess for me it’s more visuals and vibe than the loss of two players but I did try and at least mention it :)
Unfortunately, this arcade game never graced my hometown arcades, but that SNES port was one of my favorites growing up.
I've always loved game port comparisons. Well, as long as they are fun and don't devolve into school-yard type fights haha. I think the most interesting comparisons are like Sunset Riders here with the Genesis port: when one or more ports-whether for creative or technical reasons-deviates from the source game that provides a bit of entertainment in itself. There's a fair few arcade-to-home ports like that on the 8 and 16-bit consoles, especially the Atari VCS/2600, 5200, NES, SMS, Game Boy, and Game Gear. Sometimes, though maybe not as technically sound, the home ports might just be more interesting and maybe even more fun (like, I prefer Space Invaders and Super Breakout on the 2600 over the arcade). One quick suggest is to throw a label for which version you are showing on screen. It's fairly obvious with Sunset Riders but may not be with other titles.
As for Sunset Riders itself, I first played it on the SNES and had a lot of fun. I didn't play the arcade version until years later in MAME, but the arcade version is my preferred version of the game. The changes in the Genesis version are interesting plus the limited versus mode, but it's my least favorite version (at least my man Cormano made the cut). Honestly, my favorite thing with the home ports-at least with the US release-is Tom DuBois's wondrous art.
Haha no schoolyard fights here. It’s barnyard cattle fights!
Ohh I love videos like this. Looking forward to this series!
Better watch twice then lol
Love this video series. People are uh, "passionate" about port differences
They get into them for sure
Love it! Would def like to see the series continue!
Three more have been made and scheduled
@VideoGameEsoterica I'm here for it! I've also been doing research on regional differences as of late. Surprising how much Konami messed with their own games when exporting them back then.
Yes Konami loved tinkering with stuff. Sometimes it wasn’t a good thing
I rented this for SNES and then bought it from the local pawn shop. Dang I loved Sunset Riders!
It’s an absolute classic
It’s absolutely a good setup for a series. Hoping for a game where the expanded home versions are better next!
I find it fascinating when ports do their own thing, like Contra. NES version has very polished playability, while the MSX port is flick screen but adds a whole lot of levels.
You’re probably gonna have to pick a few ports in some cases, since having every port is gonna open a whole can of worms. Take Gradius for example with NES, PC Engine, Gameboy, MSX and probably twice as many I don’t know about yet…
There will def be a mix of “where arcade beats console” and “where console beats arcade” so def mixing it up
The music for this game is so incredibly nostalgic for me. Absolute peak 90's Konami.
Konami always had great music
@@Turbo187KillerB Got this on vinyl 😉
Didn’t know they’d released it. Nice
@VideoGameEsoterica It's really neat! Has burn holes in the album cover and it's clear. Pretty sure Fangamer put it out.
Makes sense it got a release. Music is so good
A very fun watch. Home conversions in the 80's were even worse. Pole Position on the C64 was a deep disappointment and made me very wary from then on.
Glad people are enjoying the concept so far :)
I liked being able to shoot the dynamite stick to blow it up in the Mega Drive version which I don't think you could do in arcade or SNES.
Good point. Little added mechanic
**speaking through a toilet paper roll**
"BURY ME WITH MY MONEY"
Bury me with my games!
This is a great concept!
Glad you enjoyed :) more coming too
I’ve always been so impressed with the snes port. Very excited to see it coming to the mister.
It’s a super faithful port
Heck yeah, Port Authority is a good idea. Now you can make amends for your saying that The Punisher and Magic Sword were unported, lol.
Haha just not ported well and I set the rules
My local grocery store had a cab of this in the front of the store by the checkout lanes. Once a week for roughly an hour at a time, this was my obsession. I literally cried when the time we walked in and Sunset Riders had been replaced by the Simpsons. Thankfully the Simpsons game turned out to be pretty fun to play, but it's still not Sunset Riders.
The good old days where arcade cabinets were everywhere
The Mega Drive version being unique was par for the course for Konami. Turtles, Contra, Castlevania. The Mega Drive version was always distinctly different.
This is true. Konami treated the Genesis differently
Love the OG and SNES versions. I never played the Genesis version but maybe I should.
BTW do you plan on doing a Sinden Lightgun on Mister video?
I won’t be as I don’t have a Sinden
@@VideoGameEsoterica okay that makes sense 😊
Yes please, more like this 🙃
Better watch more than once than 🤣 views are slow
In the SNES version he goes into the room for ....self...satisfaction.
🤣 one off the wrist
@@VideoGameEsoterica He really shoots from the hip
This was beside street fighter 2 in my local arcade
It was in so many arcades. It was a hit
Wow! I loved sega genesis in this era but subscribed to all the major game mags... electronic gaming monthy it was called then, Nintendo power, segas which I forget but you could order it with the games... tips and tricks who remembers that😂
But yeah reviews showed the SNES walkee circles around genesis version...
But I loved genesis comix zone is probably my favorite game from the 16 bit era.
Comix zone is super unique among beat em ups for sure
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know. If you've never played SIFU and you own ps4-/5 or newer Gen. It totally puts my mind back in that era of gaming. Such a blast to play.
I know if but have yet to play it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Don't miss it. It's a gem
👍
Being a dude who watched a lot of western movies I always liked this game a lot. I thought the snes port was decent
SNES port got closest visually but that censorship was a bummer
I wonder if this is the spiritual successor to Gun.Smoke? It does have some similarities like angled shooting and some of the bounty characters look the same?
Good question. Similar vibes for sure
You do not have to jump over the horns, you can keep running over those bulls
I like the Megadrive version more. Even though it is less faithful, I like it way more. More fun to play and the music is 20 times better.
There is a color hack for the megadrive and that is very much recomended
The developers for the megadrive game were forced to work with only 4MB instead of he 8MB for the SNES.
So I think that Nintendo behind the scened bribed/blackmailed Konami to butcher the Megadrive version.
The developers were like: "oh really?" and made the Megadrive version more fun to play

I’ve always jumped. Muscle memory
The arcade version is still the best for me VGE. I love it. 8^)
Same. In a world where all can easily be played the arcade version is the right choice
I could be wrong but, bizarrely, I don’t think the ports for the Mega Drive and SNES ever received a Japanese release. Only North America and Europe.
The problem with the Sega Genesis version is Konami only let it have a four megabit cartridge which was ridiculously small for when the game was released. It should have been at least an 8 megabit cartridge.
Konami always saving those dollars
@@VideoGameEsoterica Sega Lord X thinks they just didn't have much confidence in the Sega Genesis. I think he's right The platform was weak in Japan. I think Konami was wrong though since the US market is so huge if they had made better games they could have got much better sales
Konami always made weird decisions
Like all three versions have you checked out Deathwish Enforcers great game sort of a follow up.
I have. It basically has Charles Bronson in it. That’s a win in my book
@@VideoGameEsoterica For sure
In the first level there are woman throwing the dynamite. In the snes version they also removed these woman. I guess Nintendo didnt want you to shoot woman.
Typical Nintendo back in the day
Respect to anyone who can beat the Genesis game. That game whooped my ass.
It’s not easy. None of them are really
We need it on mister
Jotego got this covered ,
Plus Turtles in Time is in his workflow too :)
Hopefully soon
Would love to get the arcade version on my Pocket but I'm not sure how feasible it is.
Jotego is working on it apparently
Can you re-do Captain America & the Avengers under this new series??? not sure why you considered it 'unported' when it has some very competent 16-bit home ports. also the game might be more than b-tier since u only had nice things to say about it 🙂
B tier means I only have nice things to say. A tier is “Final Fight” territory
very nice👍
Glad you enjoyed
There is an Arcade Edition for the Genesis as this original version was junk
Yes people have tried to mod it to bring it more in line
Great video and would defo like to see more.
Sunset riders is one of my fave games and I recently found out a new arcade is opening near me with a OG 4 player cab so no prizes for guessing where I am making a bea line to :P
Regarding the ports SNES version is far superior to the Genesis version IMO, I love Sega but it just looks so dark and ugly on it.
It def got a lot uglier on Genesis. Fun they are gonna have a 4P cab
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah cant wait!
Me, the wife and a few buds hitting it :)
Enjoy :)
Mega drive version is so Bad but Snes version rock it.
Thx for this video
Happy to do it
Oof the Sega version is rough lol
It’s a very weird pivot
This game was a big deal, when it came to consoles it was heavily played.
It was def a bit for Konami
SNES ver. is my least favorite... The color of the bullets drives me crazy, half the time I don't see them. There are no s when you do a slide. Chief Scalpel is simply impossible. This version may be similar to the arcade version, but it is far from the arcade version. Sega version is my jem
Yes the difficulty was def ramped up for the home so the game would last longer
@@VideoGameEsoterica The difficulty didn't bother me, it's just small things here and there that prevent me from enjoying snes ver.
I know graphics aren't everything but it makes it seem less impressive
It def takes a step down from arcades visually
