    The vacuum is actually an intended design. It prevents leakage in pressure changes, like flying. For extended writing, just unscrew the blind cap and you'll get free flow. 😉

    Excellent pen. My only dislike is cleaning it, but I quickly decided that these pens need to have dedicated ink. I have one in Amber, Smoke, and the Clear one from Japan, each in different nib sizes. My Amber and Smoke pens have specific inks, but I haven’t decided which ink to keep in the clear yet. One of my favorite pens though!

      That pretty much aligns with what a Japanese pen friend said. It makes using the pen so much more convenient cuz you're not cleaning it all the time.

      I just bought one pre-owned (inked only once) and got a great deal on it. The M nib is on the upper end of my comfort zone, but it's so smooth that I have no regrets.

    I was misled by the title of this video. I thought the author didn't like the Fine nib on the 823 (Why was the nib in the title?). It turns out that the author likes her fine nib and that most of the dislikes could be solved by purchasing the Custom 743 with its cartridge/converter fill system.

    I am sorry i have to disagree with most of your comments on the 823. Mine's about 5 years old, what a writer, never skips and writes smooth the effect of which is like writing on glass. I have about 30 pens, what i do is avoid changing inks in my pens. I experiment with which ink will work best with my pens and once that decision is made I restrict myself to only that ink for that pen. My 823 is filled with MB Irish Green which is a well lubricated ink, shades and writes wet. The combination is an absolute joy.

      Hi emini, thank you for watching. The 823 is my favorite pen and a lot of my comments are minor as it has the fewest flaws out of my other pens. I have committed using take-sumi ink in my 823 now, but I am thinking of switching to a soft amber brown color for some dimension. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    I love this pen to bits, I actually have 3 of them, 2 in medium (so smooth!) and one in fine. I don't find them impossible to clean but it does take a bit of effort, yes, so I tend to keep them inked with the same colors, and use Iroshizuku inks in them.

      How do you compare the medium to Fine. I am thinking of buying one and I am confused about whether to go for Medium or Fine. I would personally prefer fine but I have been told the writing experience is a bit scratchy at times. What is your opinion? Is the Fine nib smooth and has a good flow?

    • @PlanningNerd
      @PlanningNerd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wassierehman8821 what I can say is that the difference between fine and medium is quite big, the medium is juicy and feels more like a western medium, while the fine is definitely on the Japanese side of fine. I wouldn't say it's scratchy, but you have to like fine japanese nibs.

  • @barrettwbenton

    Interesting (and fair) critique. The only thing about the 823 that I found mildly annoying at first was having to unscrew the blind cap before every long-winded writing session, but I quickly got into the routine/ritual of it, and now don't even think twice about it when I grab either 823. The matter of cleaning the pens isn't an issue because, weirdo that I am, I next-to-never change inks: the amber/M gets filled with Pilot Blue, the smoke/F gets Pilot Black; a previous 823, which was tragically lost, had Noodler's Old Manhattan/Blackest Black in it, and I used that ink briefly in the replacement 823 before switching to Pilot's black ink. (Note: Have you tried Pilot's Blue-Black? I like it a lot, and use it in my Vanishing Point.) I would *not* recommend the 823 to someone who changes inks as often as their socks; something like a Custom 74 is much more amenable to ink-switching (and, with the CON-70 converter, still holds a good deal more ink than your garden-variety cart/converter FP).
    Good, thoughtful video!

    • @JazzyJP
      @JazzyJP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can remove the top seal on the plunger so you never have to unscrew the cap! I don’t mind unscrewing it, I kind of like it actually, however; the pen looks much classier like the classy pen it is when it doesn’t have that space between the unscrewed bit.

    • @pleestationeryteahouse
      @pleestationeryteahouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment and feedback. I'll definitely try the Pilot Blue Black soon. Custom 74 is on my list. I love the Vanishing Point but that converter holds too little ink (which is fine for EF nib), but eventually I'll like to get a medium size nib so CON 70 for the Custom 74 could be a good balance.

    • @ChristopherRosche
      @ChristopherRosche 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree wholeheartedly except I am one of those people who changes inks/colors nearly every time I feel. This is not super easy to clean but honestly, I have never had an issue with it and have used a variety of inks. I would caution people from using inks that are known to stain easily (Bay State Blue) or waterproof inks that could potentially dry inside. But after a year of use, it cleans quite easily and I don't see that it is that much more difficult than a regular converter pen. Just rinse it out and let it soak for a bit. Iroshizuku and Pilot inks are, of course, perfect. But Diamine and some Noodler's have been nearly just as good.

    Yup, would love an EF Pilot Custom 823: if you don’t mind a convertor, the same no.15 nib is available in EF on the Pilot Custom 743; also, if you want the pen you’ve got to put down the finest line it’s capable of, try inking it with Diamine imperial blue:)

    This is a nice pen, and black is the proper business color. Colors like fusia, pink, green, shady blue, transparent, etc are for kids or youngsters (women like funky colors too). Also, the lacquer finish shows dust easier, but dust is way better than scratches!
    The most important thing Plee is that you don’t hold the pen properly. Those first two fingers need to be on the side of the pen (for guidance) while the third finger is beneath the pen for supporting it. The way you hold the pen today creates unduly pressure on the nib and will also make your fingers and hand tire faster.
    Good show!

    "Posting" is an interesting term used in the pen world. Is the cap riding atop the pen, boots and stirrup? Perhaps there was confusion or anticipation and posting is what we will do with the letter we write? The 823 I have has a stub nib and isn't comfortable as a fine writer, otherwise I would carry it with me. Otherwise, it's a standard ogiva. Filling systems all have their limits and vacuum pens aren't great for ink swaps. I would not use glitter ink in a vac pen. The presentation here was very good.

    To be honest most of your 'don't likes' are purely subjective, if not all. Dust on resin? Is that really something people get worked up about? Number of turns to open? Again, unless it takes 3 or more turns is this something that really irritates? (If quick notetaking is required get a slip cap pen or a VP). Not comfortable posted? As you have small hands you shouldn't need to post, and in fact the video clearly bears this out. So if you want to post it has nothing to do with balance and everything to do with preference (subjective, as you note). Difficult to clean? I've heard that a lot but never had any difficulty myself. Makes me wonder what's going on. This isn't a pen for constant ink swapping. I use Sailor Do-you in mine and the ink itself actually cleans the pen. Only comes in amber and smoke (and clear actually)? That's a matter of taste. Pilot obviously have no market pressure to change their model colours.

    So I just bought my first custom 823. Smoke color, fine nib. I did a rinse on it before I inked it up to make sure it was clean of any factory debris. Let it dry, and inked it up with the pilot blue ink that it came with. Immediately underwhelmed! Im new to fountain pens but have been using a Lamy Al star and TWSBI. both write great. I just got my custom 823, I'm using quality 90gm paper which has a nice smooth surface, and writing on it felt underwhelming and very fine, with scratchy feedback. However on less quality paper it felt super smooth ( i think the ink can soak in the paper hence the nib glides better). I'm planing on opening the tines a bit for better ink flow.
      Everything that can improve inkflow (feed, nib, paper, ink) will improve the feeling you get from the nib from my observation
      Try using different paper you might get different feels
      maybe you're not used to fine lines like myself, i try to get used to it for a different kind of writing. Coming from a self tuned wet stub it felt very unfamiliar.

    Several turns to uncap is inherent to all twist caps. Turning the blind cap for constant ink flow is also inherent to most vacuum fillers and it is a readily accessible information before acquiring the pen. Also the pen doesn't suddenly start skipping, it starts to gradually write drier so you know it's time to feed the nib. Also readily available information. Difficulty cleaning the vacuum, it's also inherent to most vacuum pens, so another readily available information.
    So I can't help but ask; why'd you get this pen and not one you'd be more happy with? :)
