  • If you have an engine like this or are just curious about how to time one in a fire engine you should check this out! 1948 American Lafrance 700 series fire engine gets a well deserved timing adjustment with dual distributors (12 cylinders per distributors). We take the truck for a ride at the end to see how it runs around town going over braking quality and shifting issues.

    This is my dream vehicle, I've been saving up for the past 8 months to get a 1948 700 series canopy cab just like that one. Im a little more than halfway to reaching my goal and will need to figure out a place to shelter it. This video will help me know how to maintain the engine if the truck I get still has the V12 engine that is.

    Great video. I have a 56 700. They put a diesel in it years ago. Doesn't that engine have a positive ground? Mine still has the hydraulic brakes. Please make more videos about the 700.

    I think there is more to timing these engines than just setting with a timing light based on a right hand cylinder. The timing of the two sets of points in each distributor are individually adjustable. The manual describes setting them using a piece of paper to determine the exact moment of points opening; however at the very least if you choose to use a timing light, you need to do it on a left hand cylinder as well as a right hand cylinder, since one set of points in each distributor is for the left bank and one is for the right bank. One set of points can only be timed by rotating the entire distributor. The other set of points is mounted to a movable breaker plate in the distributor so it can rotate independently. All that said: modern fuel is not the same as fuel was back then. The factory timing specs are probably not optimized for our modern high octane, slow burning fuel. You’d probably be best off advancing the timing from the factory spec (probably significantly) to get the most efficient burn and reduce the likelihood of overheating the engine. Using the programmable “advance” on your OTC timing light, you could ensure that you are advancing all four sets of breaker points the same amount from the factory timing mark, in order to ensure synchronized firing. You can keep advancing a little at a time (likely having to re-adjust idle speed/mixture in between each adjustment, as advancing timing will increase idle speed) and then take it for a test drive each time to ensure it doesn’t “ping” or detonate while pulling a hill at full throttle. Once you advance it far enough that it pings, you’d then stop driving it, back the advance off a couple degrees and lock it in. This will be the most efficient setpoint for your particular grade of gasoline. The octane selectors were provided on those distributors so the user could adjust timing for the wider variation in fuel octane back in the day. Our fuels are consistent enough today that those should just as well be set at “0°” at the start of the timing procedure.

      Call Rhode Island wiring for the harness. They have the pattern but don’t advertise it. Tell them you want the Gaspers automotive restoration 700 series ALF wiring harness.
