All my life smokers smoke around me non-smoker and I didnt mind. It wasn’t big deal and nobody make ,,an elephant out of ant”. so now that I smoke, the problem is not me but obviously people; if it’s 1950 even non smokers wouldn’t care. People started to find reason for everything as if they dont have better stuff to solve in this world. It’s actually sad how society became so judgmental for things that person shouldn’t be judged and non judgmental about things that should be controled more because society and this era is becoming more and more brainwashed by stupidity, shallowness and unempathy - that is danger, not smoking near somebody.

It seems flawed, to me, to compare the consequences of second hand exhaust between an outdoor activity and a concentrated indoor activity. Smoke outside and some if not much of the opposition to it wanes. Ps Try getting ciggies from Tobacco Road to profit cultivated human addiction without vehicles. Of course no one's died from crashing into a ciggy, so they are safer.

Imma be honest. Cancer is tricky. I used to buy the nonsense, I honestly think smoking only marginally increases your rate of cancer.
Obviously depends on how much and how long but I guarantee living in San Fran or China is worse for a child than second hand smoke virtually almost anywhere in the U.S.
The cancer causing agents in lots of cigerrettes as well were added in later on, i.e recently.
So the idea that there is this large epidemiological study of smoking, no.
What it probably found was that the MORE you smoked the higher your chances of lung cancer, but yeah, if I ate MORE chocolate bars.
Plus during the times cigerrettes were being studied for carcinogens and testing their ability to metastasize tumors there was already LOTS of second hand smoke already, so the reality is the amount of smoke probably isn't near the same dosage as it is now.
There's also lots of confounding variables that could explain say "children that grow up in smoking homes have an increased risk of cancer" but also you need to think low-income people are more likely to buy cigerrettes and they usually are more likely to develop and die from cancer anyway.
My opinion is, don't believe all the hype, don't smoke a pack a day, but the occassional one probably isn't bad for you.
Although I'd recommend natural cigerrettes because they have virtually no carcinogens. As cancerous as weed.
Also all of my relatives that smoked (virtually all of them) didn't die from cancer, and my mom who never smoked got colon cancer. Also her dad died of a brain tumor.
Its a gene thing, if you have the polymorphism you are more likely to get that form of cancer regardless if you smoke but it can be aggravated by smoking.

    • @minamur
      @minamur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

the thing is that lung cancer is even rare among smokers--significantly less rare, but still rare. so 3 out of four grandparents dying of, even if they are smokers, implies 1 of 2 things: they all died quite old, when risk for all cancers shoot up, but also when dying generally shoots way up; or they have something else in common other than smoking, like maybe where they lived.
but they smoked, so that's what killed them.
similarly, indoor allergies are getting more prevelent even as smoking, and especially smoking indoors, has fallen off a cliff. but smoking is bad so smoking is to blame.
i think this is the irrational attitude toward smoking that she's talking about in the video.
smoking is a bad habit and is bad for you, like a sweet tooth or a drinking problem or an unchecked internet habit, but it's not that big of a deal really, not as big of a deal as it's treated in some circles.

Andrew...I think Fran's tongue was slightly in cheek, and her legendary wit and cynicism are on display. After all this talk is expected to be witty and controversial, because that's Fran. If she was politically correct she would'nt be Fran. She is quite intelligent and certainly knows that smoking is harmful, and I think if was told, 'Hey, your smoking is (gasp)..trigger..(gasp)..mm.m.mm.y .asthma.." she would immediately go outside and finish her smoke.. Which begs the question, why are you watching Fran in the first place? No one who admired her would be as viscous as you are with your comment. Also, anyone who has been reading her for more than a year two knows that Fran and smoking are nearly synonymous. interesting and funny observation fran, but don't quite agree. I do think bars should be allowed to have smoking tho...arguments could be made against playing rock music, or playing pool, or even telling dirty jokes in bars....If I want a classy bar, with no smoke, and high morals, I'll go there. If I want a beer and a cigarette, and want to play acid rock on the box, i'll go there...when I go to n. york I want to unwind in a dive where I can get a cheap beer, sneek a cigarette, and get a bit raunchy. Sadly these spots are dissapearing all over....I remember "cheap shots" bar on 2nd ave, and miss it. The clean, square crowd is a drag, and that smoke- ban id forced morality in my book...If you don't like smoke then go somewhere else you uptight fuckers- you'll prolly get cancer anyhow! While her schtick is amusing and usually harmless, this is not. And her claim that "everything" that was said about homosexuality in the 70's is now said about second hand smoke is patently false. No on ever said, in the 70's of otherwise, that homosexuality causes cancer. Reputable doctors now say smoking causes cancer and the risks of second hand smoke are not trivial. I trust them rather than Fran - whose scientific training as far as I know is nil. She has no evidence that current analysis of second hand smoke is wrong, let alone completely and fundamentally wrong. Her "feeling" that this is "just like homosexuality" and that all current analysis will be fully rejected is based on nothing other than getting a joke in here and there. But this in not funny and not amusing. I remember NYC with smoke filled bars, and I remember smoking on planes. I don't want to go back, however "boring" now might be compared with then.

  • @sirithova

@pamount oh for gods sake, im not confused about objective evidence! I meant that I'm sure doctors and scientists used to presents "evidence" that was suppoused to be "objective" about homosexuality being a deasise. You must remember that in terms of empirical science methodology there isn't actually such thing as OBJECTIVE.
About second hand smoking: it might be dangerous, but Fran Lebowitz doesn't believe so and that's her opinion. About evidence being objective: look above.

This is very dangerous logic. If the constitution protects you from smells that you subjectively think are "nasty", to the point that we can make laws about it, then we can also ban public use of cars (someone might smell them!) and perfume (not everybody likes it, some people are allergic), not to mention incense, scented candles, barbecues, cheese, leaving the house without showering, etc.
If you want to support general public bans, it had better be for things that are a threat to public health, not just annoying to you personally.

Now you are going back to saying that it's toxic, so you are proving my point: it matters, a lot, that cigarette smoke is a risk to public health. If it wasn't, the fact that you think it's "nasty" would be irrelevant.
I don't know why you keep saying smoking isn't a right, neither myself nor Leibowitz has argued that it is so it seems like a straw man.
