I live in Philadelphia, which we're taught - especially those of us born and raised here - that Philadelphia was the epicenter of the American Revolution, or that without Philadelphia there might be no United States. But then I began to research Boston and realized that almost all of the main points and points of contention of the American Revolution began there. While Boston was expressing their outrage in street riots and protests, Philadelphia was still largely loyalist and wanted to maintain ties to the British government. It was the men from Boston - John Adams, Sam Adams, John Hancock, so on - that attended the first Continental Congress here in Philadelphia - chosen for the central location - that really pushed the other colonies/states to discuss the ideas that became the United States. I will say, though, that when I went to Boston, I was damned confusing. Growing up in the orderly, gridiron Quaker designed city of Philadelphia made Boston's streets and alleys a bit hard to navigate. I wanted to sit on the Old State House steps and cry.
