  • A fabric Yo-Yo is a textile embellishment that can be made from fabric scraps and a few stitches. It's about manipulating the fabric and creating a round rosette that can be layered, stitched onto other fabric pieces, or used as jewelry. In today's video, I'll show my process for creating a fabric yo-yo using standard sewing supplies: fabric, needle, thread, iron & ironing mat.

When my Mom was pregnant with me she found directions for a yo-yo quilt in a magazine and decided to make one for me circa 1973 (Spoiler alert it never got finished) It was passed to me to finish, which I still haven't. But, I still have all the yo-yos. Some of them are made from fabrics that had meaning. (The fabric used to make my mom's bridesmaid's dresses, leftovers from a quilt my Grandmother made me, etc)
I guess it's time to get working on it again. Thanks for the inspiration. ❤️

How sweet that your mom saved her project! I have heard many anectodotes from women who have this "creative energy" while pregnant. (I took up landscape painting.) And a yo-yo quilt is quite the undertaking - 9 months doesn't seem like enough time! But, how thoughtful to have used special fabrics. You can add to the project and even pass it on. Thanks for sharing such a touching memory.

I love yo-yos!! When I was about 10 my sister and I went to a mid week youth group at church. The lady teaching had us make a bunch of yo-yos which we strung to make legs, arms and a body. Then we made a clown head. They were cute

Yes! I remember seeing something similar, a doll body made from yo-yos. Thanks 😊

When I opened You-Tube this morning and saw this, I may have squealed. :) I love making and using yoyos in my slowstitching but have not had consistent or predictable results especially with the thickness of the center or the size of the hole. I had no idea how to control that but thanks to this video, now I do. I have to admit, however, that I don't like to drag out the iron so I may continue finger pressing. Thanks so much, Daniela. I can't wait to see more.

Thank you! I like to make little “elements” that I’ll use later on in projects, or that can be embellished further. I like to create videos on making these pieces!

Yo-yos in my country are named something else. It translates to english as "gossip" because here a group of women sit down to sew them and it doesn't require as much atention to sew those as knitting or crocheing, so you can pay more attention to the gossip😅
