Our Sicklebar Mower has a major problem. We need to fix this before we can cut hay.

- Our New Holland 451 sicklebar mower has a broken pivot pin. It is a large pin that the entire cutter bar pivots on. I am going to have to disassemble the mower to weld the pivot pin back on. While I have the sickle bar apart I am going to replace several parts on the cutter bar, and hopefully it will cut better when we are done.

I remember the days of fixing those mowers. It seems like I punched out and riveted a million sections and ledger plates. You are doing an outstanding job on repairing the equipment 👍💪
I don't know why, but I get emotional when I see old equipment given TLC and then working so hard and so well for the person who fixed them! I wonder if you realize you are carrying the baton of past generations as you work the land and make a home for yourself and your loved ones. Check and see if your cycle head should it be ahead the rest of the mower.

It's a pain in the ass and these sickle bar mowers are trash
... And it's the same with much newer equipment. Seems an on-going process to be as much mechanic as farmer. Those machines have a LOT of parts and are subject to friction and wear. Very complex machines. But sometimes I have to wonder where the parts are made ...
Great Great video,, brings back fantastic memories, Sickle mowers.. We used to cut 80 acres with one,, Oh man so time consuming... We upgraded 20 years ago to a drum mower, then about 10 years ago we upgraded again to a disc mower... Fantastic video.. 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜

I really admire your skill and cleverness at fixing this old machinery so that it will work almost good as new. There's something very satisfying about watching that sickle bar mower cut the field.
I really love watch that mower cut. Brings back memories of when my dad put his 10 year old (me) daughter on a Farmall M & said watch me mow a couple of rounds and then he put me in the drivers seat and I mowed hay from then on until he got a new hay bind. I used to mow the small pastures lots even after he got the big hay bind. I could almost smell the fresh cut hay when you were mowing. Memories...
Hey bud, great video! I've been followin your channel for a while and think your doin an awesome job. I know your tryin to keep the cost at a minimum, so I'll just throw in some tips. For the best cut, get rid of the aftermarket rock guards. A little at a time is fine. Also get an oil can with lite bearing oil and after you get done cutting, oil down the cutter bar. It saves a lot on wear on the wear parts. Lastly, think about looking around for a used hay conditioner. They generally go for $250-500. Well worth the investment as it can cut down on drying time by a day or two for alfalfa. Sometimes more. Just some advice from a retired farmer who's done a lot of hay. Love the show!
The outer end of the bar should lead the inner end by about 2' . It appears to be trailing now.
Good job on the repair - the short dense clover looked like a challenge, I expect it will work better in the alfalfa. You're right to take special care of Scout - I've seen my share of pet damage from a sickle mower when they were hiding in the tall hay.

Outer end of cutter bar should lead the tractor end by 2 inches. Keep going you'll get there.
According to the manual, the end will lead about 4 inches on a 9 foot sickle. And when it drags the ground, it will bend back and make it perfectly straight. And that is how it seems to be.
@@CountryViewAcres OK My manual was for 7 ft. In the video it looked like it was trailing by a couple inches. Maybe it was the angle.
I ran a sickle bar 40 years ago when I was a teenager helping out at an uncle's property. Funny I remember that he was always maintaining it to keeping it sharp and running.
From your overhead footage, it looks like you need to adjust your cutter bar lead.
That outside shoe needs to be about 11/2” ahead of the inner one.
In your video it appears to be dragging behind. You wouldn’t thing that makes a huge difference but it does.
You really have the knack for fixing things. I admire that. I would presume you couldn't even operate a farm without that knowledge....you'd have to be a millionaire to have someone come in every time something broke. LOL. Thanks for watching after the safety of your dog. Have a Blessed day.

Some of my earliest and most treasured memories of our farm is sitting and watching the men on the farm sharpen and repair mowers of this vintage. Showed your videos to my father... he was highly amused. Thought you were doing great and learning the best way, by breaking stuff!

Some advice... when repairing or cleaning out equipment turn off all your machine fully first, Do not let the machine idle, they do sometimes (old stuff) start up and cutting off parts of human body, our hands or legs if we come to complacent.
Good to see old equipment used again , I worked with and repaired old stuff like this for a living. 😀

I've just started watching your channel a couple of months. I am enjoying watching you using old haying machinery. It brings back many good memories. 60 years ago I was a teenager. Spent summers helping my uncle on his farm. He had the same machinery. Good job repairing the machinery. Northern Michigan viewer.
Time consuming this time mate but, for future cuts it’s probably going to be so much easier. Preventative maintenance is always better than fixing break downs. Keep up the great site and good luck. 🇦🇺
Good job, old mowers can be a real pain, possible the end of the bar needs to be adjusted forward, it needs to lead the tractor side of the bar by a inch or so,
So under load it will balance out,
Just my two cents, check out you manual on this adjustment,
Good luck and keep your fingers out of that cutter bar, raising and lowering it can be dangerous
Also good job on keeping your dogs cats away from the mower,

Well that came out marvelous. I'm so glad you can get right in and fix stuff. Something to be proud of.
I think those busted punches were Pin Punches. Not suited for breaking things loose. They are best reserved for moving pins in deep holes that are already broken loose. Use a punch with a strong, tapered nose to start those rivets moving. Once they are free, a pin punch can finish the job if it is a longer rivet.

Looks like it’s working good. The far end is still trailing, it should be leading.... not sure how you adjust that mower for that.
I absolutely agree, when not in work and laid out in the cutting position the support shoe on the far end of the cutter bar should be leading slightly so the angle compared to the tractor (front to back) should be about 85 degrees - near right angle so that when working it flexes back to 90 degrees and everything is in line. Does that mower have a break back latch (so that the cutter bar swings back a little should you strike an object) - if so that is where it likely the lead can likely be adjusted.
Also note the exact setting of the length of the top link is important as this adjusts the position of the rock guards relative to the soil. You normally would want them parallel to the soil (ie neither pointed up nor down.)
Thomas - I was thinking the same thing. He might have to adjust the 3-point to make the change. My old JD #5 has a turn buckle for this adjustment.

We used to have a specialty anvil that had a ledge for breaking off old blades and pockets to hold the heads of rivets. There was also a thick punch with an indentation used to peen over the new rivets - fun times!

Makin' Hay! I sure enjoy your videos. I used a sickle bar only once as a teenager on my grandparent's farm. It was a devilish machine for sure! That weld looked good, beefy and gets the job done.
Evan, after you adjusted the middle of the sickle bar mower, it seem to cut a lot better and I think you got it fixed. It amazes me how you take an old piece of equipment and find a way to make it work, but you must have a knack for that.

The NH 451 mower will never make New Holland's list of exceptional machines. At least you know what can be done to improve it's performance. Forget about it being one of the best sickle bar mowers made it will never be that but perhaps you can get it to the point where you can live with it.We had one of them and it drove us crazy . Finally moved up to a NH 478 mower conditioner .
Good job on the repairs clover is the hardest grass to cut with a mower like yours it will be fine i think in the alfalfa.
it seams that i spend 60 % of my time working on stuff and 20 % doing maintenance to prevent breakdowns 10%waiting on parts, crops ripening , cattle to get right size, etc and 10 % actually farming
Anything old and used for many years will show some wear but you know what you have now. you may never spend another dollar on the mower now.

My dad cut the back legs of his sister's cat off with a sicklebar mower. The cat came home is about a week and lived a long life. used a sicklebar mower for a long time and my language really improved when I was able to replace it with a disc mower. They don't hang up and you can mow faster.
I like your channel, when you you stuff that you are filming. It may or may not work out the way you planned. You windrows of hay was not too big. I used to make bigger ones as a kid on the farm. We never broke shear pins
On the broken punches...proof of the difference between cheap and inexpensive.

I think it would be a good idea to buy just one more new and proper Rock Guard and use it to replace the old one at the Center of the Sickle length so that the whole weight of the assembly will be equally supported. sdh in CT
i wore out several mowers in my life time never started with a new one always fixed up used ones we sickle mowed several quarters of grass hay for winter feed for the cows, all of the land was too rocky for farming so we replaced guards and sections frequently from stone damage and we pulled a dump rake behind

It takes time to fix equipment that has been neglected for years
I would try putting a new rock guard in the middle less room for sway if the same height as ends. I would also try gearing down a gear to get PTO running faster vs land speed.
Hey Evan, I thhink as muchb as you are trying to save this you may want keep your eyes out for a haybine. They are much better then these simple sickle bar mowers and if you are lucky you can get some at auction for very low price.
You have done good other than setting bar lead. The way you have it most of the cutting is happening on just one side of every guard, instead of 50/50 on all sides
Great video . Sometimes you put a lot of wort in the old equipment. I believe the old equipment was built better. They just need some good old fashioned TLC.. just wondered if can by a brand new one like that..?
It looks like you don’t have enough lead on the mow board end that’s supposed to start before the inside mow straight hand pick up the cutting bar and make square cuts
At the end of the hay making time re-check machines ,get spare parts now,then spray every moving part with gloss paint,so that when you go to start next season every thing moves easily, not doing so makes it difficult mechanicly,things do not slide on rust or dull surfaces, learnt the hard way myself.
Can you recommend a log cabin builder? Or Log cabin kit.

My ford 501 i just put all new rock guards and knives and knive backer bar and new drive head. I got the new ledger to install. I could use new shims also. Ive been mainly using it at church to clean up the field there. Went to church camp this year for a work weekend and i came home with a 8ft flail mower that needs some rehab to go back into service for me or someone else. Im not sure if i have the hp for it. Im itching to get the 501 out and try it with all the new parts
The outer tip of the sickle bar should be leading your cut not trailing behind the cut like yours is.

Could you grind the new rock guards down to match the old ones ?
Speed plays a factor with cycle bars sometimes faster makes them cut better and maybe replace all the blades with sharp one might help cut better but enjoying your videos
We have same type mower
You should,perhaps think about investing in a blasting cabinet,and over the winter,completely rebuilding the whole mower. Harbor Freight makes one,for about $150,and there are a few simple mods you can do to make them a bit more effective. There is a video or two on TH-cam that shows what thse mods are.
Sure looks like your getting a bit more comfortable working on the equipment.
drop that wind row bar to the ground ,on the end ,so it can wipe a clear place to mow,let it float the ground
The cutter bar looks the same as on my 489nh haybine i just got need to replace lots of knifes on it
