Melbourne architect Lisa Breeze discovered a Victorian weatherboard cottage in Northcote, seeing it as a challenging but exciting project for her own home. The small 105m2 space required efficient design, aiming to include a third bedroom, revamp wet areas, and create a comfortable light-filled kitchen, dining, and living area.
Lisa focused on practical materials, avoiding excess space and opting for a calming interior with soft blues and steel greys. She advocates for living comfortably in smaller homes, drawing inspiration from denser cities. The design exemplifies the idea that a big home isn't necessary for a comfortable life.

Beautiful home ❤️🏠, clever use of space and the skylights are great for bringing in natural light. I like how the owner/ architect explained what was done to make this property work for her family and how they have implemented systems that will make it more sustainable. I live in Portugal in a flat and our building was in the last 2 years insulated on the outside, it made a huge difference to the temperature on the inside of our home. This year we installed a pellet fire place and our home is so comfortable. The building work had to be done, it was long overdue, but it has seriously improved our energy rating and lowered our energy consumption.

I believe the real critical aspect of these contemporary extensions is to bring the heritage part up to today's standards in terms of insulation, windows, etc. The challenge is not destroying or losing the details of the heritage in order to bring the standards up.

@@SimpleDwelling I think that it's possible to keep the beauty of the older homes and making them more user friendly, more comfortable homes. Double glazed windows and good insulation as well as updated electrical and plumbing services will make it infinitely more enjoyable and comfortable to live in those old houses.

Once again a proper home! Lisa has done a fantastic job to make a stunning, compact and 'eco' home. Layout, materials and footprint. Nothing showy or simply for design sake. As Lisa say just enough and not building bigger for 'bigger' sake. Considering the location the garden is incredible. Back to the house, retaining the original features is done so well. Lisa thank you for sharing your amazing home. Would move in in a heartbeat!

Loved the way Lisa spoke about her home and how she justified all those decisions from layout to interior finishes. Context is so critical in design.

Too much "bla bla bla" from the architect : the video would be better with less words, just minimal technical explications
