Exactly how I feel about The Criterion Collection. I want to SEE all of the films, but I don’t want any to own 99% of them. However, for those who DO want to own these films, this is often the best or only way to own them. They restore and archive films that shaped cinema into what it is today.
I picked up Southern Comfort from VSU as well and Six String Samuri when it was at $20 - not crazy about that movie but I want all of the VSUs so $20 want bad!
Great haul! Dazed & Confused looks great and great packaging as well. I just watched Night of the Living Dead last weekend, you’re right, it holds up really well. I don’t mind Criterion, they’re kind of the OG when it comes to boutique labels but I’d love to see them step up their game in terms of packaging. Definitely lagging compared to Arrow, Second Sight, Vinegar Syndrome & Umbrella.
I remember when they were the place that you could get a lot of laser discs in the late 80s lol...they have been around!!! I think they do need to step up their packaging...not improving packaging kind reads as they think they are better and above it -while in my opinion, great artwork and special packaging should fit like a glove with their brand
@@AVAPopCulture 💯 …..there’s a few decent ones like Videodrome and Dazed & Confused but they don’t hold a candle to the premium sets of Arrow, VS & Second Sight. The pricing for what you get is a little suspect too
After hours was blind buy from criterion for me when it was first came out, I enjoyed it. I always recommend watching them first..most/many criterion films are on MAX available for streaming (especially older criterion).
Same I don’t pickup a lot of criterion’s either. I picked up Peeping Tom 4k it was a blind buy and it was awesome! It came out days before psycho the original movie. Also picked up Trainspotting 4k (horrible packaging but awesome movie )
the trainspotting is so awkard with that packaging lol.... I saw Peeping Tom in my store...I may consider it before the end of the month, again, I just think they will be there later whereas some things are going out of print or will sell out with other retailers and boutiques that I feel like I need to get first!
I picked up the Night of the Living Dead 4k, Salo, Straw Dogs, Crash, the Great Escape and Flight of the Phoenix from the Criterion sale. I agree that Criterion doesn't have as many movies that I like compared to other companies but they do have a few. I've never watched After Hours so I may need to pick up that movie before the sale ends.

Mute Witness is decent. I dont know if I would rewatch it. It's on streaming. It's definitely worth one watch. It's a fun cat and mouse thriller. You've never seen Blue Velvet? Watch it now.
I personally didn't love Night of the Living Dead. Still kept it in my collection though. Picked up Fast Times a sale or two ago. Haven't revisited the Criterion yet. Same thing with Breakfast Club and of course they came out with the 4K right after I bought the Blu. The same happened to me on Dazed and Confused. Two of my favorites. I almost grabbed After Hours last week. Probably should've. Great choices and pickups!
After Hours is my blind buy that I am looking forard to cracking into and may cover in my midnight movies series! I think the OG night of the living dead is one to have as a film collector if nothing else!!
I went to B&N yesterday morning and only picked up one, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. They didn’t have Peeping Tom or To Die For which I saw both in your B&N!
@@AVAPopCulture yeah hopefully it’s because more people are taking advantage of the sale and buying them up. Totally get what you’re saying about the MSRP. It was a bit of a letdown during my first 50% off sale earlier this year. Pat Garret & Billy the Kid was $35 on sale with an MSRP of $70. It comes with 4 discs but not even a proper booklet, just a foldout pamphlet. I mean c’mon there’s no effing way I’d pay $70 for that 😆😂
@@AVAPopCulture I recently paid $200 for an unopened Second Sight box set of Drive and I feel less buyers remorse than if I had to pay the MSRP of some of these 🤣 Actually the MSRP on that Drvie box set was $80 (shipped) and it included a beautiful premium box, art cards, a 240 page hardback book and a 2nd book, the actual novel the film is based on.
I like PB it looks like a book and got from Best Buy for 35$ it was sticker for 70$. Got dazed and night of the living dead at Best Buy for half when they were new
Barbarella is great high recommend it. I buy criterion all year round for $35 the 50% off sale is a manipulation. Night of the living dead perfect, Breakfast Club is classic, fast times is must buy. Criterion also has The Princess Bride!
You need to get Rumblefish, Blue Velvet, The Others, Bound (Matrix directors, Repo man 4K, Dog Fight, the Thief, To Die For. They have a lot of good ones but I agree it’s a very snooty label that thinks their shit don’t stink
You bought Buffy on blu ray? The movie or the show? I heard the show's blu ray transfer/mastering was a disaster. Also, I loved Dazed and Confused in the 90s when i was a teen. I also hadn't watched it nearly 20 years when i popped it in again a few years ago. Not only did it hold up, I might even have loved it even more, if that's even possible. Enjoy!
the movie! I still have all of the show on DVD, havent looked for it as an upgrade yet...yeah Dazed and Confused is the early 90s movie that feels like and 80s movie but was set in the 70s LOL
During July ALL Criterion are 50% off. Don’t go off the sticker they mark because it’s usually less than what they mark. Also Basketcase is not worth it
I am sure... the 49.99 MSRP stickers come out to being 24.99 BUT they are NEVER ever sold for that 49.99 price...the only time they go by that price is when they use it as the base for the 50% off sale...the rest of the time they are always 20% or 30% off that price at B&N AND when I order straight from Criterion...- th eRepo Man 4k is $34.99 at Criterion for Pre-Order for instance - that is why going by the MSRP is not really "real" because they virtually never actually sale for that and NOWHERE on Earth is a standard BluRay release worth, or should ever have a suggested retail of $49.99 -
@@AVAPopCulture i see what you are saying now but I think Criterion and Barnes & Noble do full MSRP throughout the year. During July Barnes & Noble sale Criterion also lowers their prices to get some buyers. All pre-orders however are sometimes more. For the most part all Blurays from criterion are $19.99 at 50% off. Repo man 4K is a brand new pre-order and is in 4K now for the new release but is also a Digipack (which are always more). However all 4K releases are $24.99 at 50% off. Any prices higher than $24.99 at 50% off are more expensive 4Ks that are Digipack releases. I have see. Criterion full price and branes and noble does full price but none of them are full price during July. Wait till August and everything on both sites will be full price. Criterion might sell for slightly less but that’s a discount from ordering directly through them. All other sites will have at full price except for Criterion. I see what you are saying but you are not getting these for cheaper than their 50% off sale. Furthermore no other studio puts ALL of their titles for half price. Can’t think of any studios. Usually pay well over $30 for 4K from boutique labels and usually $30-$40 on a bluray from a boutique. Criterion Barnes & noble sale is the best sale that I have ever seen on physical media every year. Wish other studios did that so I have to give props to whoever allows all these titles to get 1/2 off. Not only that you get the 10% AND you get $5 and $10 off of tons of stuff you buy to just add to more discounts and free money off. I usually end up paying well under 50% off for titles at B&N during their sale. So they might be tricky with the sale but it really is 1/2 off or more if you play your cards right. The best prices in my opinion out of everyone in the market.
